1 T hen David said to himself, “Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape into the land of the Philistines. Saul then will despair of searching for me anymore in all the territory of Israel, and I will escape from his hand.”

Dijo luego David en su corazón: «Cualquier día de estos voy a morir a manos de Saúl; por tanto, lo mejor será que me fugue a tierra de los filisteos, para que Saúl no se ocupe más de mí y no me siga buscando por todo el territorio de Israel; así escaparé de sus manos.»

2 S o David arose and crossed over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.

Se levantó, pues, David, y con los seiscientos hombres que lo acompañaban se pasó a Aquis hijo de Maoc, rey de Gat.

3 A nd David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, each with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s widow.

Y vivió David con Aquis en Gat, él y sus hombres, cada cual con su familia; David con sus dos mujeres, Ahinoam, la jezreelita, y Abigail, la que fue mujer de Nabal, el de Carmel.

4 N ow it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, so he no longer searched for him.

Saúl recibió la noticia de que David había huido a Gat, y no lo buscó más.

5 T hen David said to Achish, “If now I have found favor in your sight, let them give me a place in one of the cities in the country, that I may live there; for why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”

David dijo a Aquis: —Si he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, haz que me den un lugar en alguna de las aldeas para que habite allí; pues ¿por qué ha de vivir tu siervo contigo en la ciudad real?

6 S o Achish gave him Ziklag that day; therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day.

Aquel mismo día Aquis le asignó Siclag, por lo cual Siclag pertenece a los reyes de Judá hasta hoy.

7 T he number of days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.

El número de los días que David habitó en la tierra de los filisteos ascendió a un año y cuatro meses.

8 N ow David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites and the Girzites and the Amalekites; for they were the inhabitants of the land from ancient times, as you come to Shur even as far as the land of Egypt.

David subía con sus hombres y hacían incursiones contra los gesuritas, los gezritas y los amalecitas; porque estos habitaban desde hacía largo tiempo la región que se extiende, en dirección a Shur, hasta la tierra de Egipto.

9 D avid attacked the land and did not leave a man or a woman alive, and he took away the sheep, the cattle, the donkeys, the camels, and the clothing. Then he returned and came to Achish.

David asolaba el país, y no dejaba con vida hombre ni mujer; se llevaba las ovejas, las vacas, los asnos, los camellos y las ropas, y regresaba adonde estaba Aquis.

10 N ow Achish said, “Where have you made a raid today?” And David said, “Against the Negev of Judah and against the Negev of the Jerahmeelites and against the Negev of the Kenites.”

Y cuando Aquis le preguntaba: «¿Dónde habéis incursionado hoy?», David le respondía: «Por el Neguev de Judá» (o «por el Neguev de Jerameel» o «por el Neguev de los ceneos»).

11 D avid did not leave a man or a woman alive to bring to Gath, saying, “Otherwise they will tell about us, saying, ‘So has David done and so has been his practice all the time he has lived in the country of the Philistines.’”

Ni hombre ni mujer dejaba David llegar con vida a Gat, pues decía: «No sea que den aviso de nosotros y digan: “Esto lo hizo David.”» Ésta fue su costumbre todo el tiempo que vivió en la tierra de los filisteos.

12 S o Achish believed David, saying, “He has surely made himself odious among his people Israel; therefore he will become my servant forever.”

Pero Aquis confiaba en David, pues pensaba: «Él se ha hecho odioso a su pueblo Israel, y será mi siervo para siempre.»
