1 T hen Samuel died; and all Israel gathered together and mourned for him, and buried him at his house in Ramah. And David arose and went down to the wilderness of Paran. Nabal and Abigail

Por entonces murió Samuel. Todo Israel se congregó para llorarlo y lo sepultaron en su casa, en Ramá. Entonces se levantó David y se fue al desierto de Parán.

2 N ow there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel; and the man was very rich, and he had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats. And it came about while he was shearing his sheep in Carmel

En Maón había un hombre que tenía su hacienda en Carmel. Era muy rico, tenía tres mil ovejas y mil cabras, y estaba esquilando sus ovejas en Carmel.

3 ( now the man’s name was Nabal, and his wife’s name was Abigail. And the woman was intelligent and beautiful in appearance, but the man was harsh and evil in his dealings, and he was a Calebite),

Aquel hombre se llamaba Nabal, y su mujer, Abigail. Aquella mujer era de buen entendimiento y hermosa apariencia, pero el hombre era rudo y de mala conducta; era del linaje de Caleb.

4 t hat David heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.

Supo David en el desierto que Nabal esquilaba sus ovejas.

5 S o David sent ten young men; and David said to the young men, “Go up to Carmel, visit Nabal and greet him in my name;

Entonces envió David diez jóvenes y les dijo: «Subid al Carmel e id a Nabal; saludadlo en mi nombre

6 a nd thus you shall say, ‘ Have a long life, peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have.

y decidle: “Paz a ti, a tu familia, y paz a todo cuanto tienes.

7 N ow I have heard that you have shearers; now your shepherds have been with us and we have not insulted them, nor have they missed anything all the days they were in Carmel.

He sabido que tienes esquiladores. Ahora bien, tus pastores han estado con nosotros; no los tratamos mal ni les faltó nada en todo el tiempo que han estado en Carmel.

8 A sk your young men and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your eyes, for we have come on a festive day. Please give whatever you find at hand to your servants and to your son David.’”

Pregunta a tus criados y ellos te lo dirán. Hallen, por tanto, estos jóvenes gracia a tus ojos, porque hemos venido en buen día; te ruego que des lo que tengas a mano a tus siervos y a tu hijo David.”»

9 W hen David’s young men came, they spoke to Nabal according to all these words in David’s name; then they waited.

Los jóvenes enviados por David fueron y dijeron a Nabal todas estas cosas en nombre de David, y callaron.

10 B ut Nabal answered David’s servants and said, “ Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants today who are each breaking away from his master.

Pero Nabal respondió a los jóvenes enviados por David: —¿Quién es David, quién es el hijo de Isaí? Muchos siervos hay hoy que huyen de sus señores.

11 S hall I then take my bread and my water and my meat that I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give it to men whose origin I do not know?”

¿He de tomar yo ahora mi pan, mi agua y la carne que he preparado para mis esquiladores, y darla a hombres que no sé de dónde son?

12 S o David’s young men retraced their way and went back; and they came and told him according to all these words.

Los jóvenes que había enviado David, dando media vuelta, tomaron el camino de regreso. Cuando llegaron a donde estaba David, le dijeron todas estas cosas.

13 D avid said to his men, “Each of you gird on his sword.” So each man girded on his sword. And David also girded on his sword, and about four hundred men went up behind David while two hundred stayed with the baggage.

Entonces David dijo a sus hombres: «Cíñase cada uno su espada.» Cada uno se ciñó su espada y también David se ciñó la suya. Subieron tras David unos cuatrocientos hombres, y dejaron doscientos con el bagaje.

14 B ut one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, “Behold, David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our master, and he scorned them.

Pero uno de los criados avisó a Abigail, mujer de Nabal, diciendo: «Mira que David ha enviado mensajeros del desierto para saludar a nuestro amo, y él los ha despreciado.

15 Y et the men were very good to us, and we were not insulted, nor did we miss anything as long as we went about with them, while we were in the fields.

Aquellos hombres han sido muy buenos con nosotros, y cuando estábamos en el campo nunca nos trataron mal, ni nos faltó nada en todo el tiempo que anduvimos con ellos.

16 T hey were a wall to us both by night and by day, all the time we were with them tending the sheep.

Muro fueron para nosotros de día y de noche, todos los días que hemos estado con ellos apacentando las ovejas.

17 N ow therefore, know and consider what you should do, for evil is plotted against our master and against all his household; and he is such a worthless man that no one can speak to him.” Abigail Intercedes

Ahora, pues, reflexiona y mira lo que has de hacer, porque ya está decidida la ruina de nuestro amo y de toda su casa; pues él es un hombre tan perverso, que no hay quien pueda hablarle.»

18 T hen Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves of bread and two jugs of wine and five sheep already prepared and five measures of roasted grain and a hundred clusters of raisins and two hundred cakes of figs, and loaded them on donkeys.

Tomó Abigail a toda prisa doscientos panes, dos cueros de vino, cinco ovejas guisadas, cinco medidas de grano tostado, cien racimos de uvas pasas y doscientos panes de higos secos, y lo cargó todo sobre unos asnos.

19 S he said to her young men, “ Go on before me; behold, I am coming after you.” But she did not tell her husband Nabal.

Luego dijo a sus criados: «Id delante de mí, y yo os seguiré luego.» Pero nada declaró a su marido Nabal.

20 I t came about as she was riding on her donkey and coming down by the hidden part of the mountain, that behold, David and his men were coming down toward her; so she met them.

Montada en un asno, descendió por una parte secreta del monte, mientras David y sus hombres venían en dirección a ella; y ella les salió al encuentro.

21 N ow David had said, “Surely in vain I have guarded all that this man has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him; and he has returned me evil for good.

David había comentado: «Ciertamente en vano he guardado en el desierto todo lo que este hombre tiene, sin que nada le haya faltado de todo cuanto es suyo; y él me ha devuelto mal por bien.

22 M ay God do so to the enemies of David, and more also, if by morning I leave as much as one male of any who belong to him.”

Traiga Dios sobre los enemigos de David el peor de los castigos, que de aquí a mañana no he de dejar con vida ni a uno solo de los que están con él.»

23 W hen Abigail saw David, she hurried and dismounted from her donkey, and fell on her face before David and bowed herself to the ground.

Cuando Abigail vio a David, se bajó en seguida del asno; inclinándose ante David, se postró en tierra,

24 S he fell at his feet and said, “On me alone, my lord, be the blame. And please let your maidservant speak to you, and listen to the words of your maidservant.

y echándose a sus pies le dijo: —¡Que caiga sobre mí el pecado!, señor mío, pero te ruego que permitas que tu sierva hable a tus oídos, y escucha las palabras de tu sierva.

25 P lease do not let my lord pay attention to this worthless man, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal is his name and folly is with him; but I your maidservant did not see the young men of my lord whom you sent.

No haga caso ahora mi señor de ese hombre perverso, de Nabal; porque conforme a su nombre, así es. Él se llama Nabal, y la insensatez lo acompaña; pero yo, tu sierva, no vi a los jóvenes que tú enviaste.

26 “ Now therefore, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, since the Lord has restrained you from shedding blood, and from avenging yourself by your own hand, now then let your enemies and those who seek evil against my lord, be as Nabal.

Ahora pues, señor mío, ¡vive Jehová, y vive tu alma!, que Jehová te ha impedido venir a derramar sangre y vengarte por tu propia mano. Sean, pues, como Nabal tus enemigos, y todos los que procuran el mal contra mi señor.

27 N ow let this gift which your maidservant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who accompany my lord.

En cuanto a este presente que tu sierva te ha traído, que sea dado a los hombres que siguen a mi señor.

28 P lease forgive the transgression of your maidservant; for the Lord will certainly make for my lord an enduring house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil will not be found in you all your days.

Te ruego que perdones a tu sierva esta ofensa; pues Jehová hará de cierto una casa perdurable a mi señor, por cuanto mi señor pelea las batallas de Jehová, y no vendrá mal sobre ti en todos tus días.

29 S hould anyone rise up to pursue you and to seek your life, then the life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with the Lord your God; but the lives of your enemies He will sling out as from the hollow of a sling.

Aunque alguien se haya levantado para perseguirte y atentar contra tu vida, con todo, la vida de mi señor será atada al haz de los que viven delante de Jehová tu Dios, mientras que él arrojará las vidas de tus enemigos como quien las tira con el cuenco de una honda.

30 A nd when the Lord does for my lord according to all the good that He has spoken concerning you, and appoints you ruler over Israel,

Cuando Jehová haga con mi señor conforme a todo el bien que ha hablado de ti, y te establezca como príncipe sobre Israel,

31 t his will not cause grief or a troubled heart to my lord, both by having shed blood without cause and by my lord having avenged himself. When the Lord deals well with my lord, then remember your maidservant.”

entonces, señor mío, no tendrás motivo de pena ni remordimientos por haber derramado sangre sin causa, o por haberte vengado con tu propia mano. Guárdese, pues, mi señor, y cuando Jehová haya favorecido a mi señor, acuérdate de tu sierva.

32 T hen David said to Abigail, “ Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me,

Entonces David dijo a Abigail: —Bendito sea Jehová, Dios de Israel, que te envió para que hoy me encontraras.

33 a nd blessed be your discernment, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodshed and from avenging myself by my own hand.

Bendito sea tu razonamiento y bendita tú, que me has impedido hoy derramar sangre y vengarme por mi propia mano.

34 N evertheless, as the Lord God of Israel lives, who has restrained me from harming you, unless you had come quickly to meet me, surely there would not have been left to Nabal until the morning light as much as one male.”

Porque, ¡vive Jehová, Dios de Israel!, que me ha impedido hacerte mal, que de no haberte dado prisa en venir a mi encuentro, mañana por la mañana no le habría quedado con vida a Nabal ni un solo hombre.

35 S o David received from her hand what she had brought him and said to her, “ Go up to your house in peace. See, I have listened to you and granted your request.”

David recibió de sus manos lo que le había traído, y le dijo: —Sube en paz a tu casa, pues he escuchado tu petición y te la he concedido.

36 T hen Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was holding a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk; so she did not tell him anything at all until the morning light.

Cuando Abigail volvió adonde estaba Nabal, éste estaba celebrando en su casa un banquete como de rey. Nabal estaba alegre y completamente ebrio, por lo cual ella no le dijo absolutamente nada hasta el día siguiente.

37 B ut in the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him so that he became as a stone.

Pero por la mañana, cuando ya a Nabal se le habían pasado los efectos del vino, le contó su mujer estas cosas; entonces se le apretó el corazón en el pecho, y se quedó como una piedra.

38 A bout ten days later, the Lord struck Nabal and he died. David Marries Abigail

Diez días después, Jehová hirió a Nabal, y éste murió.

39 W hen David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the Lord, who has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal and has kept back His servant from evil. The Lord has also returned the evildoing of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent a proposal to Abigail, to take her as his wife.

Luego de oír David que Nabal había muerto, dijo: «Bendito sea Jehová, que juzgó la causa de la afrenta que recibí de manos de Nabal, y ha preservado del mal a su siervo. Jehová ha hecho caer la maldad de Nabal sobre su propia cabeza.» Después mandó David a decir a Abigail que quería tomarla por mujer.

40 W hen the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you to take you as his wife.”

Los siervos de David se presentaron ante Abigail en Carmel y le hablaron diciendo: —David nos envía para tomarte por mujer.

41 S he arose and bowed with her face to the ground and said, “Behold, your maidservant is a maid to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.”

Ella se levantó, se postró rostro en tierra, y dijo: —Aquí tienes a tu sierva, que será una sierva para lavar los pies de los siervos de mi señor.

42 T hen Abigail quickly arose, and rode on a donkey, with her five maidens who attended her; and she followed the messengers of David and became his wife.

Se levantó luego Abigail y, acompañada de las cinco doncellas que la servían, montó en un asno, siguió a los mensajeros de David, y fue su mujer.

43 D avid had also taken Ahinoam of Jezreel, and they both became his wives.

También tomó David a Ahinoam de Jezreel, y ambas fueron sus mujeres.

44 N ow Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from Gallim.

Porque Saúl había dado a su hija Mical, mujer de David, a Palti hijo de Lais, que era de Galim.
