1 N ow it came about that when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious and very angry and mocked the Jews.

Cuando oyó Sanbalat que nosotros edificábamos el muro, se enojó y enfureció mucho, y burlándose de los judíos,

2 H e spoke in the presence of his brothers and the wealthy men of Samaria and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Are they going to restore it for themselves? Can they offer sacrifices? Can they finish in a day? Can they revive the stones from the dusty rubble even the burned ones?”

dijo delante de sus hermanos y del ejército de Samaria: —¿Qué hacen estos débiles judíos? ¿Se les permitirá volver a ofrecer sus sacrificios? ¿Acabarán en un día? ¿Resucitarán de los montones del polvo las piedras que fueron quemadas?

3 N ow Tobiah the Ammonite was near him and he said, “Even what they are building— if a fox should jump on it, he would break their stone wall down!”

Y estaba junto a él Tobías, el amonita, el cual dijo: —Lo que ellos edifican del muro de piedra, si sube una zorra lo derribará.

4 H ear, O our God, how we are despised! Return their reproach on their own heads and give them up for plunder in a land of captivity.

«¡Oye, Dios nuestro, cómo somos objeto de su desprecio! Haz que su ofensa caiga sobre su cabeza y entrégalos por despojo en la tierra de su cautiverio.

5 D o not forgive their iniquity and let not their sin be blotted out before You, for they have demoralized the builders.

No cubras su iniquidad ni su pecado sea borrado delante de ti, porque se han airado contra los que edificaban.»

6 S o we built the wall and the whole wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.

Edificamos, pues, el muro, y toda la muralla fue terminada hasta la mitad de su altura, porque el pueblo tuvo ánimo para trabajar.

7 N ow when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repair of the walls of Jerusalem went on, and that the breaches began to be closed, they were very angry.

Pero aconteció que oyeron Sanbalat, Tobías, los árabes, los amonitas y los de Asdod que los muros de Jerusalén eran reparados, pues ya las brechas comenzaban a ser cerradas, y se encolerizaron mucho.

8 A ll of them conspired together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause a disturbance in it. Discouragement Overcome

Conspiraron luego todos a una para venir a atacar a Jerusalén y hacerle daño.

9 B ut we prayed to our God, and because of them we set up a guard against them day and night.

Entonces oramos a nuestro Dios, y por culpa de ellos montamos guardia contra ellos de día y de noche.

10 T hus in Judah it was said, “The strength of the burden bearers is failing, Yet there is much rubbish; And we ourselves are unable To rebuild the wall.”

Y decía Judá: «Las fuerzas de los acarreadores se han debilitado y el escombro es mucho; no podremos reconstruir el muro.»

11 O ur enemies said, “They will not know or see until we come among them, kill them and put a stop to the work.”

Nuestros enemigos dijeron: «Que no sepan ni vean hasta que entremos en medio de ellos, los matemos y hagamos cesar la obra.»

12 W hen the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times, “ They will come up against us from every place where you may turn,”

Pero sucedió que cuando venían los judíos que vivían entre ellos, nos decían una y otra vez: «De todos los lugares donde habitan, ellos caerán sobre vosotros.»

13 t hen I stationed men in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, the exposed places, and I stationed the people in families with their swords, spears and bows.

Entonces puse al pueblo por familias, con sus espadas, con sus lanzas y con sus arcos, por las partes bajas del lugar, detrás del muro y en los sitios abiertos.

14 W hen I saw their fear, I rose and spoke to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people: “ Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives and your houses.”

Después miré, me levanté y dije a los nobles, a los oficiales y al resto del pueblo: —No temáis delante de ellos; acordaos del Señor, grande y temible, y pelead por vuestros hermanos, por vuestros hijos y por vuestras hijas, por vuestras mujeres y por vuestras casas.

15 W hen our enemies heard that it was known to us, and that God had frustrated their plan, then all of us returned to the wall, each one to his work.

Cuando supieron nuestros enemigos que estábamos sobre aviso, y que Dios había desbaratado sus planes, nos volvimos todos al muro, cada uno a su tarea.

16 F rom that day on, half of my servants carried on the work while half of them held the spears, the shields, the bows and the breastplates; and the captains were behind the whole house of Judah.

Desde aquel día la mitad de mis siervos trabajaba en la obra, y la otra mitad se mantenía armada con lanzas, escudos, arcos y corazas. Y detrás de ellos estaban los jefes de toda la casa de Judá.

17 T hose who were rebuilding the wall and those who carried burdens took their load with one hand doing the work and the other holding a weapon.

Los que edificaban en el muro, los que acarreaban y los que cargaban, con una mano trabajaban en la obra y con la otra sostenían la espada.

18 A s for the builders, each wore his sword girded at his side as he built, while the trumpeter stood near me.

Porque los que edificaban, cada uno tenía su espada ceñida a la cintura, y así edificaban; y el que tocaba la trompeta estaba junto a mí,

19 I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “The work is great and extensive, and we are separated on the wall far from one another.

pues yo había dicho a los nobles, a los oficiales y al resto del pueblo: —La obra es grande y extensa, y nosotros estamos apartados en el muro, lejos los unos de los otros.

20 A t whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.”

En el lugar donde oigáis el sonido de la trompeta, reuníos allí con nosotros; nuestro Dios peleará por nosotros.

21 S o we carried on the work with half of them holding spears from dawn until the stars appeared.

Así pues, mientras trabajábamos en la obra desde la subida del alba hasta que salían las estrellas, la mitad de ellos montaba guardia con la lanza en la mano.

22 A t that time I also said to the people, “Let each man with his servant spend the night within Jerusalem so that they may be a guard for us by night and a laborer by day.”

También dije entonces al pueblo: —Cada uno con su criado permanezca dentro de Jerusalén; de noche sirvan de centinelas y de día trabajen en la obra.

23 S o neither I, my brothers, my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us removed our clothes, each took his weapon even to the water.

Y ni yo ni mis hermanos, ni mis jóvenes ni la gente de guardia que me seguía, nos quitamos nuestro vestido; cada uno se desnudaba solamente para bañarse.
