1 N ow it came about after this, that Nahash the king of the sons of Ammon died, and his son became king in his place.

Después de estas cosas aconteció que murió Nahas, rey de los hijos de Amón, y reinó en su lugar su hijo.

2 T hen David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the sons of Ammon to Hanun to console him.

Y dijo David: «Tendré misericordia con Hanún hijo de Nahas, porque también su padre tuvo conmigo misericordia.» Así David envió embajadores para que lo consolaran de la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando llegaron los siervos de David a la tierra de los hijos de Amón, donde estaba Hanún, para consolarlo,

3 B ut the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, “ Do you think that David is honoring your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”

los príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanún: «¿Según tu parecer ha enviado David a consolarte porque quiere honrar a tu padre? ¿No vienen más bien sus siervos a ti para espiar, examinar y reconocer la tierra?»

4 S o Hanun took David’s servants and shaved them and cut off their garments in the middle as far as their hips, and sent them away.

Entonces Hanún tomó a los siervos de David y los rapó, les cortó los vestidos por la mitad, hasta las nalgas, y los despachó.

5 T hen certain persons went and told David about the men. And he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly humiliated. And the king said, “ Stay at Jericho until your beards grow, and then return.”

Se fueron luego, y cuando llegó a David la noticia sobre aquellos hombres, envió a recibirlos, porque estaban muy avergonzados. El rey mandó que les dijeran: «Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os crezca la barba, y entonces volveréis.»

6 W hen the sons of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the sons of Ammon sent 1, 000 talents of silver to hire for themselves chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, from Aram-maacah and from Zobah.

Al ver los hijos de Amón que se habían hecho odiosos a David, Hanún y los hijos de Amón enviaron mil talentos de plata para tomar a sueldo carros y gente de a caballo de Mesopotamia, de Siria, de Maaca y de Soba.

7 S o they hired for themselves 32, 000 chariots, and the king of Maacah and his people, who came and camped before Medeba. And the sons of Ammon gathered together from their cities and came to battle.

Y tomaron a sueldo treinta y dos mil carros, y al rey de Maaca y a su ejército, los cuales vinieron y acamparon delante de Medeba. Y se reunieron también los hijos de Amón en sus ciudades y acudieron a la guerra.

8 W hen David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army, the mighty men.

Cuando David lo supo, envió a Joab con todo el ejército de los hombres valientes.

9 T he sons of Ammon came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field. Ammon and Aram Defeated

Los amonitas salieron y ordenaron la batalla a la entrada de la ciudad; y los reyes que habían venido estaban aparte en el campo.

10 N ow when Joab saw that the battle was set against him in front and in the rear, he selected from all the choice men of Israel and they arrayed themselves against the Arameans.

Y viendo Joab que el ataque contra él había sido dispuesto por el frente y por la retaguardia, escogió de los más aventajados que había en Israel, y con ellos ordenó su ejército contra los sirios.

11 B ut the remainder of the people he placed in the hand of Abshai his brother; and they arrayed themselves against the sons of Ammon.

Puso luego el resto de la gente al mando de Abisai, su hermano, y los organizó en orden de batalla contra los amonitas.

12 H e said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the sons of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.

Y dijo: «Si los sirios son más fuertes que yo, tú me ayudarás; y si los amonitas son más fuertes que tú, yo te ayudaré.

13 B e strong, and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and may the Lord do what is good in His sight.”

Esfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo, y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y haga Jehová lo que bien le parezca.»

14 S o Joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the Arameans, and they fled before him.

Entonces avanzó Joab con el pueblo que traía consigo, para pelear contra los sirios; pero ellos huyeron delante de él.

15 W hen the sons of Ammon saw that the Arameans fled, they also fled before Abshai his brother and entered the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

Cuando los amonitas vieron que los sirios habían huido, huyeron también ellos delante de Abisai, hermano de Joab, y entraron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab volvió a Jerusalén.

16 W hen the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the River, with Shophach the commander of the army of Hadadezer leading them.

Al ver los sirios que habían caído delante de Israel, enviaron embajadores, y trajeron a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del Éufrates, cuyo capitán era Sofac, general del ejército de Hadad-ezer.

17 W hen it was told David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan, and came upon them and drew up in formation against them. And when David drew up in battle array against the Arameans, they fought against him.

Luego que fue dado aviso a David, reunió a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán, llegó adonde estaban y ordenó batalla contra ellos. David ordenó su tropa contra los sirios, y estos pelearon contra él.

18 T he Arameans fled before Israel, and David killed of the Arameans 7, 000 charioteers and 40, 000 foot soldiers, and put to death Shophach the commander of the army.

Pero el pueblo sirio huyó delante de Israel; y mató David de los sirios a siete mil hombres de los carros y cuarenta mil hombres de a pie; asimismo mató a Sofac, general del ejército.

19 S o when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and served him. Thus the Arameans were not willing to help the sons of Ammon anymore.

Cuando los siervos de Hadad-ezer vieron que habían caído delante de Israel, concertaron paz con David y quedaron sometidos a él. A partir de entonces, el pueblo sirio nunca más quiso ayudar a los amonitas.
