1 A nd Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s relatives, and spoke to them and to the whole clan of the household of his mother’s father, saying,

Abimelec hijo de Jerobaal fue a Siquem, a los hermanos de su madre, y dijo a ellos y a toda la familia de la casa del padre de su madre:

2 “ Speak, now, in the hearing of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or that one man rule over you?’ Also, remember that I am your bone and your flesh.”

«Yo os ruego que digáis a todos los de Siquem: “¿Qué os parece mejor, que os gobiernen setenta hombres, todos los hijos de Jerobaal, o que os gobierne un solo hombre?” Acordaos que yo soy hueso vuestro y carne vuestra.»

3 A nd his mother’s relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the hearing of all the leaders of Shechem; and they were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our relative.”

Hablaron por él los hermanos de su madre a todos los de Siquem todas estas palabras, y el corazón de ellos se inclinó a favor de Abimelec, porque decían: «Nuestro hermano es.»

4 T hey gave him seventy pieces of silver from the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, and they followed him.

Además le dieron setenta siclos de plata del templo de Baal-berit, con los cuales Abimelec alquiló hombres ociosos y vagabundos que lo siguieran.

5 T hen he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.

Y yendo a la casa de su padre en Ofra, mató a sus hermanos, los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, sobre una misma piedra; pero quedó Jotam, el hijo menor de Jerobaal, que se escondió.

6 A ll the men of Shechem and all Beth-millo assembled together, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar which was in Shechem.

Entonces se juntaron todos los de Siquem con toda la casa de Milo, y fueron y proclamaron rey a Abimelec cerca de la llanura del pilar que estaba en Siquem.

7 N ow when they told Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice and called out. Thus he said to them, “Listen to me, O men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.

Cuando se lo dijeron a Jotam, éste subió a la cumbre del monte Gerizim, y alzando su voz clamó: «Oídme, hombres de Siquem, y así también os oiga Dios:

8 O nce the trees went forth to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, ‘Reign over us!’

Fueron una vez los árboles a elegirse un rey y dijeron al olivo: “Reina sobre nosotros.”

9 B ut the olive tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my fatness with which God and men are honored, and go to wave over the trees?’

Pero el olivo respondió: “¿He de dejar mi aceite, con el cual se honra a Dios y a los hombres, para reinar sobre los árboles?”

10 T hen the trees said to the fig tree, ‘You come, reign over us!’

»Dijeron, pues, los árboles a la higuera: “Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.”

11 B ut the fig tree said to them, ‘Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to wave over the trees?’

La higuera respondió: “¿He de dejar mi dulzura y mi buen fruto para reinar sobre los árboles?”

12 T hen the trees said to the vine, ‘You come, reign over us!’

»Dijeron luego los árboles a la vid: “Pues ven tú, reina sobre nosotros.”

13 B ut the vine said to them, ‘Shall I leave my new wine, which cheers God and men, and go to wave over the trees?’

La vid les respondió: “¿He de dejar mi vino, que alegra a Dios y a los hombres, para reinar sobre los árboles?”

14 F inally all the trees said to the bramble, ‘You come, reign over us!’

»Todos los árboles rogaron entonces a la zarza: “Anda tú, reina sobre nosotros.”

15 T he bramble said to the trees, ‘If in truth you are anointing me as king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, may fire come out from the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.’

Pero la zarza respondió a los árboles: “Si en verdad me proclamáis rey sobre vosotros, venid, abrigaos bajo mi sombra; y si no, salga fuego de la zarza y devore a los cedros del Líbano.”

16 “ Now therefore, if you have dealt in truth and integrity in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have dealt with him as he deserved—

»Ahora, bien: ¿Habéis procedido con verdad y con integridad al hacer rey a Abimelec? ¿Habéis actuado bien con Jerobaal y con su casa, le habéis pagado conforme a la obra de sus manos?

17 f or my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian;

Mi padre peleó por vosotros y expuso su vida al peligro para libraros de manos de Madián,

18 b ut you have risen against my father’s house today and have killed his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your relative—

y vosotros os habéis levantado hoy contra la casa de mi padre y habéis matado a sus setenta hijos sobre una misma piedra, y habéis puesto por rey sobre los de Siquem a Abimelec, hijo de su criada, debido a que es vuestro hermano.

19 i f then you have dealt in truth and integrity with Jerubbaal and his house this day, rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.

Si con verdad y con integridad habéis procedido hoy con Jerobaal y con su casa, que gocéis de Abimelec y él goce de vosotros.

20 B ut if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and consume the men of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem and from Beth-millo, and consume Abimelech.”

Y si no, fuego salga de Abimelec y consuma a los de Siquem y a la casa de Milo, y fuego salga de los de Siquem y de la casa de Milo y consuma a Abimelec.»

21 T hen Jotham escaped and fled, and went to Beer and remained there because of Abimelech his brother. Shechem and Abimelech Fall

Jotam escapó y huyó, se fue a Beer y allí se quedó por miedo de su hermano Abimelec.

22 N ow Abimelech ruled over Israel three years.

Después que Abimelec hubo dominado sobre Israel tres años,

23 T hen God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,

envió Dios un espíritu de discordia entre Abimelec y los hombres de Siquem, y los de Siquem se rebelaron contra Abimelec,

24 s o that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.

para que la violencia hecha a los setenta hijos de Jerobaal, y su sangre, recayera sobre su hermano Abimelec, que los mató, y sobre los hombres de Siquem que lo ayudaron a matar a sus hermanos.

25 T he men of Shechem set men in ambush against him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who might pass by them along the road; and it was told to Abimelech.

Los de Siquem pusieron en las cumbres de los montes asechadores que robaban a todos los que pasaban junto a ellos por el camino. De esto se dio aviso a Abimelec.

26 N ow Gaal the son of Ebed came with his relatives, and crossed over into Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.

Un día, Gaal hijo de Ebed pasó con sus hermanos por Siquem, y los de Siquem pusieron en él su confianza.

27 T hey went out into the field and gathered the grapes of their vineyards and trod them, and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god, and ate and drank and cursed Abimelech.

Salieron al campo, recogieron y pisaron la uva, e hicieron fiesta: entraron en el templo de sus dioses y, comiendo y bebiendo, maldijeron a Abimelec.

28 T hen Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is Zebul not his lieutenant? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him?

Entonces Gaal hijo de Ebed dijo: «¿Quién es Abimelec, y qué es Siquem, para que nosotros le sirvamos? ¿No es hijo de Jerobaal? ¿No es Zebul su ayudante? Servid a los hombres de Hamor, padre de Siquem; pero ¿por qué hemos de servir a Abimelec?

29 W ould, therefore, that this people were under my authority! Then I would remove Abimelech.” And he said to Abimelech, “Increase your army and come out.”

Ojalá estuviera este pueblo bajo mi mano; enseguida arrojaría yo a Abimelec, y le diría: “Refuerza tus ejércitos, y sal a pelear.”»

30 W hen Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger burned.

Cuando Zebul, gobernador de la ciudad, oyó las palabras de Gaal hijo de Ebed, se encendió en ira

31 H e sent messengers to Abimelech deceitfully, saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem; and behold, they are stirring up the city against you.

y envió secretamente mensajeros a decir a Abimelec: «Gaal hijo de Ebed y sus hermanos han venido a Siquem y están sublevando la ciudad contra ti.

32 N ow therefore, arise by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field.

Levántate, pues, ahora de noche, tú y el pueblo que está contigo, y pon emboscadas en el campo.

33 I n the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early and rush upon the city; and behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you shall do to them whatever you can.”

Por la mañana, al salir el sol, madruga y cae sobre la ciudad. Cuando Gaal y el pueblo que está con él salgan contra ti, tú harás con él según se presente la ocasión.»

34 S o Abimelech and all the people who were with him arose by night and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.

Levantándose, pues, de noche Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba, pusieron emboscada contra Siquem con cuatro compañías.

35 N ow Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the city gate; and Abimelech and the people who were with him arose from the ambush.

Cuando Gaal hijo de Ebed salió, se puso a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad. Entonces Abimelec y todo el pueblo que con él estaba salieron de sus escondites.

36 W hen Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “ Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains.” But Zebul said to him, “You are seeing the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.”

Al verlos, Gaal dijo a Zebul: —He allí gente que desciende de las cumbres de los montes. Zebul le respondió: —Tú ves la sombra de los montes como si fueran hombres.

37 G aal spoke again and said, “Behold, people are coming down from the highest part of the land, and one company comes by the way of the diviners’ oak.”

Volvió Gaal a hablar, y dijo: —¡He allí gente que desciende de en medio de la tierra, y una tropa que viene por el camino de la encina de los adivinos!

38 T hen Zebul said to him, “Where is your boasting now with which you said, ‘Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?’ Is this not the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them!”

Zebul le respondió: —¿Cómo? Si antes decías: “¿Quién es Abimelec para que lo sirvamos?” ¿No es éste el pueblo que tenías en poco? Sal pues, ahora, y pelea con él.

39 S o Gaal went out before the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech.

Gaal salió al frente de los de Siquem y peleó contra Abimelec.

40 A bimelech chased him, and he fled before him; and many fell wounded up to the entrance of the gate.

Pero Abimelec lo persiguió; Gaal huyó de él y muchos cayeron heridos hasta la puerta misma de la ciudad.

41 T hen Abimelech remained at Arumah, but Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives so that they could not remain in Shechem.

Abimelec se quedó en Aruma, y Zebul echó fuera de Siquem a Gaal y a sus hermanos para que no habitaran en Siquem.

42 N ow it came about the next day, that the people went out to the field, and it was told to Abimelech.

Aconteció al siguiente día, que el pueblo salió al campo. Le dieron aviso a Abimelec,

43 S o he took his people and divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the field; when he looked and saw the people coming out from the city, he arose against them and slew them.

el cual tomó a su gente, la repartió en tres compañías y puso emboscadas en el campo. Cuando miró, vio al pueblo que salía de la ciudad. Entonces se levantó contra ellos y los atacó.

44 T hen Abimelech and the company who was with him dashed forward and stood in the entrance of the city gate; the other two companies then dashed against all who were in the field and slew them.

Abimelec y la compañía que estaba con él acometieron con ímpetu y se detuvieron a la entrada de la puerta de la ciudad; las otras dos compañías acometieron a todos los que estaban en el campo y los mataron.

45 A bimelech fought against the city all that day, and he captured the city and killed the people who were in it; then he razed the city and sowed it with salt.

Abimelec peleó contra la ciudad todo aquel día, la tomó y mató al pueblo que en ella estaba; destruyó la ciudad y la sembró de sal.

46 W hen all the leaders of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.

Cuando oyeron esto todos los que estaban en la torre de Siquem, se metieron en la fortaleza del templo del dios Berit.

47 I t was told Abimelech that all the leaders of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.

Avisaron a Abimelec que estaban reunidos los hombres de la torre de Siquem,

48 S o Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a branch from the trees, and lifted it and laid it on his shoulder. Then he said to the people who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do likewise.”

y subió junto con toda la gente que estaba con él al monte Salmón, tomó un hacha en la mano, cortó una rama de los árboles y, levantándola, se la puso sobre sus hombros, diciéndole al pueblo que estaba con él: «Lo que me habéis visto hacer, apresuraos a hacerlo como yo.»

49 A ll the people also cut down each one his branch and followed Abimelech, and put them on the inner chamber and set the inner chamber on fire over those inside, so that all the men of the tower of Shechem also died, about a thousand men and women.

Todo el pueblo cortó también cada uno su rama y siguieron a Abimelec; pusieron las ramas junto a la fortaleza del templo y le prendieron fuego con ellas, de modo que todos los de la torre de Siquem murieron, unos mil, entre hombres y mujeres.

50 T hen Abimelech went to Thebez, and he camped against Thebez and captured it.

Después Abimelec marchó sobre Tebes, le puso sitio y tomó la ciudad.

51 B ut there was a strong tower in the center of the city, and all the men and women with all the leaders of the city fled there and shut themselves in; and they went up on the roof of the tower.

En medio de Tebes había una torre fortificada, a la cual se retiraron todos los hombres, las mujeres y todos los señores de la ciudad. Cerraron tras sí las puertas y se subieron al techo de la torre.

52 S o Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it, and approached the entrance of the tower to burn it with fire.

Llegó Abimelec a la torre y la atacó; pero cuando se acercó a la puerta para prenderle fuego,

53 B ut a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head, crushing his skull.

una mujer dejó caer un pedazo de rueda de molino sobre la cabeza de Abimelec y le rompió el cráneo.

54 T hen he called quickly to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, so that it will not be said of me, ‘A woman slew him.’” So the young man pierced him through, and he died.

Abimelec llamó apresuradamente a su escudero y le dijo: «Saca tu espada y mátame, para que no se diga de mí: “Una mujer lo mató.”» Entonces su escudero lo atravesó con la espada, y murió.

55 W hen the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, each departed to his home.

Cuando los israelitas vieron muerto a Abimelec, se fueron cada uno a su casa.

56 T hus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father in killing his seventy brothers.

Así pagó Dios a Abimelec el mal que había hecho contra su padre al matar a sus setenta hermanos.

57 A lso God returned all the wickedness of the men of Shechem on their heads, and the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal came upon them.

Y todo el mal de los hombres de Siquem lo hizo Dios volver sobre sus cabezas. Y se cumplió en ellos la maldición de Jotam hijo de Jerobaal.
