1 C ome, and let us return unto the Lord: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.

«Diranno: “Venite, torniamo al Signore, perché egli ha strappato, ma ci guarirà; ha percosso, ma ci fascerà.

2 A fter two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

In due giorni ci ridarà la vita; il terzo giorno ci rimetterà in piedi, e noi vivremo alla sua presenza.

3 T hen shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Conosciamo il Signore, sforziamoci di conoscerlo! La sua venuta è certa, come quella dell’aurora; egli verrà a noi come la pioggia, come la pioggia di primavera che annaffia la terra”.

4 O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away.

«Che ti farò, o Efraim? Che ti farò, o Giuda? La vostra bontà è come una nuvola del mattino, come la rugiada del mattino, che presto scompare.

5 T herefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth.

Per questo li faccio a pezzi mediante i profeti, li uccido con le parole della mia bocca, e il mio giudizio verrà fuori come la luce.

6 F or I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

Poiché io desidero bontà, non sacrifici, e la conoscenza di Dio più degli olocausti.

7 B ut they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.

Ma essi, come Adamo, hanno trasgredito il patto, si sono comportati perfidamente verso di me.

8 G ilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is polluted with blood.

Galaad è una città di malfattori, è piena di tracce di sangue.

9 A nd as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent: for they commit lewdness.

Come una banda di briganti attende in agguato la gente, così fa la congrega dei sacerdoti: assassinano sulla via di Sichem, commettono scelleratezze.

10 I have seen an horrible thing in the house of Israel: there is the whoredom of Ephraim, Israel is defiled.

Nella casa d’Israele ho visto cose orribili: là si è prostituito Efraim, là Israele si contamina!

11 A lso, O Judah, he hath set an harvest for thee, when I returned the captivity of my people.

A te pure, o Giuda, una mietitura è assegnata, quando io ricondurrò dall’esilio il mio popolo.
