1 S et the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the Lord, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.

«Metti in bocca il corno! Come un’aquila, piomba il nemico sulla casa del Signore, perché hanno violato il mio patto e hanno trasgredito la mia legge.

2 I srael shall cry unto me, My God, we know thee.

Essi grideranno a me: “Mio Dio, noi d’Israele ti conosciamo!”

3 I srael hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.

Israele ha rigettato il bene; il nemico lo inseguirà.

4 T hey have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off.

Si sono costituiti dei re senza il mio ordine, si sono eletti dei prìncipi a mia insaputa; si sono fatti, con il loro argento e oro, degli idoli destinati a essere distrutti.

5 T hy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; mine anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocency?

Il tuo vitello, o Samaria, è un’abominazione. La mia ira divampa contro di loro; quanto tempo passerà prima che possano essere purificati?

6 F or from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.

Poiché viene da Israele anche questo vitello; un operaio l’ha fatto, e non è un dio. Infatti il vitello di Samaria sarà ridotto in frantumi.

7 F or they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.

Poiché costoro seminano vento e raccoglieranno tempesta; la semenza non farà stelo, i germogli non daranno farina, e se ne facessero, gli stranieri la divorerebbero.

8 I srael is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.

«Israele è divorato; essi sono diventati fra le nazioni come un vaso che non viene apprezzato.

9 F or they are gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.

Poiché sono saliti in Assiria, come un asino selvatico cui piace starsene solitario; Efraim con i suoi doni si è procurato degli amanti.

10 Y ea, though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes.

Benché distribuiscano i loro doni fra le nazioni, ora io li radunerò, e cominceranno a decrescere a causa del tributo al re dei prìncipi.

11 B ecause Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be unto him to sin.

Efraim ha moltiplicato gli altari per peccare, e gli altari lo faranno cadere in peccato.

12 I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.

Anche se scrivessi per lui le mie leggi a migliaia, sarebbero considerate come cosa che non lo concerne.

13 T hey sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the Lord accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.

Quanto ai sacrifici che mi offrono, immolano carne e la mangiano; il Signore non li gradisce. Ora il Signore si ricorderà della loro iniquità e punirà i loro peccati; essi ritorneranno in Egitto.

14 F or Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.

Israele ha dimenticato colui che li ha fatti e ha costruito palazzi. Giuda ha moltiplicato le città fortificate; ma io manderò il fuoco nelle loro città ed esso divorerà i loro castelli».
