1 A nd it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the Lord said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.

Dopo questo, Davide consultò il Signore e disse: «Devo salire in qualcuna delle città di Giuda?» Il Signore gli rispose: «Sali». Davide chiese: «Dove devo andare?» Il Signore rispose: «A Ebron».

2 S o David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.

Davide dunque salì con le sue mogli, Ainoam di Izreel e Abigail di Carmel, che era stata moglie di Nabal.

3 A nd his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

Davide vi condusse pure la gente che era con lui, ciascuno con la sua famiglia, e si stabilirono nelle città di Ebron.

4 A nd the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul.

Gli uomini di Giuda vennero e là unsero Davide come re della casa di Giuda. Fu riferito a Davide che erano stati gli uomini di Iabes di Galaad a seppellire Saul.

5 A nd David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the Lord, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.

Allora Davide inviò dei messaggeri a Iabes di Galaad e fece dire loro: «Siate benedetti dal Signore, voi che avete mostrato questo atto di lealtà verso Saul, vostro signore, dandogli sepoltura!

6 A nd now the Lord shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.

Ora il Signore mostri a voi la sua bontà e la sua fedeltà! Anche io vi farò del bene, perché avete agito così.

7 T herefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

Ora si rafforzino le vostre mani e siate uomini valorosi; perché il vostro signore Saul è morto, e la casa di Giuda mi ha unto come re su di essa». Is-Boset, re d’Israele

8 B ut Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;

Abner, figlio di Ner, capo dell’esercito di Saul, prese Is-Boset, figlio di Saul, lo fece passare a Maanaim

9 a nd made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

e lo nominò re di Galaad, degli Asuriti, di Izreel, di Efraim, di Beniamino e di tutto Israele.

10 I sh-bosheth Saul’s son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

Is-Boset, figlio di Saul, aveva quarant’anni quando fu fatto re d’Israele, e regnò due anni. Ma la casa di Giuda seguì Davide.

11 A nd the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

Davide regnò a Ebron nella casa di Giuda per sette anni e sei mesi. Guerra civile

12 A nd Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

Abner, figlio di Ner, e la gente di Is-Boset, figlio di Saul, uscirono da Maanaim per marciare verso Gabaon.

13 A nd Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

Ioab, figlio di Seruia, e la gente di Davide si misero anch’essi in marcia. Si incontrarono presso lo stagno di Gabaon e si fermarono gli uni da un lato dello stagno, gli altri dalla parte opposta.

14 A nd Abner said to Joab, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.

Allora Abner disse a Ioab: «Vengano dei giovani e si affrontino con la spada in nostra presenza!» E Ioab rispose: «Vadano pure!»

15 T hen there arose and went over by number twelve of Benjamin, which pertained to Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.

Quelli dunque si mossero e si fecero avanti in numero uguale: dodici per Beniamino e per Is-Boset, figlio di Saul, e dodici della gente di Davide.

16 A nd they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

Ciascuno di essi, preso l’avversario per la testa, gli piantò la spada nel fianco; così caddero tutti insieme. Perciò quel luogo, che è vicino a Gabaon, fu chiamato Chelcat-Asurim.

17 A nd there was a very sore battle that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

In quel giorno vi fu una violenta battaglia, nella quale Abner, con la gente d’Israele, fu sconfitto dalla gente di Davide.

18 A nd there were three sons of Zeruiah there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe.

C’erano là i tre figli di Seruia: Ioab, Abisai e Asael. Asael era veloce come una gazzella della campagna.

19 A nd Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.

Asael si mise a inseguire Abner e non si voltava per andare a destra o a sinistra, ma correva dietro ad Abner.

20 T hen Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.

Abner, guardandosi alle spalle, disse: «Sei tu, Asael?» Questi rispose: «Sono io».

21 A nd Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.

Abner gli disse: «Vòltati a destra o a sinistra, afferra uno di quei giovani e prenditi le sue spoglie!» Ma Asael non volle smettere d’inseguirlo.

22 A nd Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother?

Abner di nuovo gli disse: «Smetti d’inseguirmi! Perché obbligarmi a inchiodarti al suolo? Come potrei poi alzare la fronte davanti a tuo fratello Ioab?»

23 H owbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

Ma egli si rifiutò di cambiare strada; allora Abner con l’estremità inferiore della lancia lo colpì nel ventre, e la lancia lo trapassò. Asael cadde e morì in quello stesso luogo; e quanti passavano di là, dove egli era caduto morto, si fermavano.

24 J oab also and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

Ma Ioab e Abisai inseguirono Abner, e il sole tramontava quando giunsero al colle di Amma, che è di fronte a Ghia, sulla via del deserto di Gabaon.

25 A nd the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.

I figli di Beniamino si radunarono dietro Abner, formarono una schiera compatta e si fermarono in vetta a una collina.

26 T hen Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

Allora Abner chiamò Ioab e disse: «La spada divorerà per sempre? Non sai che alla fine ci sarà dell’amaro? Quando verrà dunque il momento che ordinerai al popolo di non dare più la caccia ai suoi fratelli?»

27 A nd Joab said, As God liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

Ioab rispose: «Com’è vero che Dio vive, se tu non avessi parlato, il popolo non avrebbe smesso d’inseguire i suoi fratelli prima di domani mattina».

28 S o Joab blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.

Allora Ioab suonò la tromba e tutto il popolo si fermò, senza più inseguire Israele, e cessò di combattere.

29 A nd Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.

Abner e la sua gente camminarono tutta quella notte per la campagna, passarono il Giordano, attraversarono tutto il Bitron e giunsero a Maanaim.

30 A nd Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.

Anche Ioab tornò dall’inseguire Abner; e, dopo aver radunato tutto il popolo, risultò che della gente di Davide mancavano diciannove uomini e Asael.

31 B ut the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died.

Ma la gente di Davide aveva ucciso trecentosessanta uomini dei Beniaminiti e della gente di Abner.

32 A nd they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.

Portarono via Asael e lo seppellirono nella tomba di suo padre, a Betlemme. Poi Ioab e la sua gente camminarono tutta la notte; il giorno spuntava quando giunsero a Ebron.
