1 T hen all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the Lord in Mizpeh.

Allora tutti i figli d’Israele uscirono, da Dan fino a Beer-Sceba e al paese di Galaad, e la comunità si raccolse come un solo uomo davanti al Signore, a Mispa.

2 A nd the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.

I capi di tutto il popolo e tutte le tribù d’Israele si presentarono all’assemblea del popolo di Dio, in numero di quattrocentomila fanti, capaci di usare la spada.

3 ( Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?

I figli di Beniamino udirono che i figli d’Israele erano saliti a Mispa. I figli d’Israele dissero: «Parlate! Com’è stato commesso questo delitto?»

4 A nd the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

Allora il Levita, il marito della donna che era stata uccisa, rispose: «Io ero giunto con la mia concubina a Ghibea di Beniamino per passarvi la notte.

5 A nd the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.

Ma gli abitanti di Ghibea insorsero contro di me e circondarono di notte la casa dove stavo; avevano l’intenzione di uccidermi; violentarono la mia concubina e lei morì.

6 A nd I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.

Io presi la mia concubina, la feci a pezzi, che mandai per tutto il territorio della eredità d’Israele, perché costoro hanno commesso un delitto e una infamia in Israele.

7 B ehold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.

Eccovi qui tutti, o figli d’Israele; dite qui il vostro parere e che cosa consigliate di fare».

8 A nd all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.

Tutto il popolo si alzò come un sol uomo e disse: «Nessuno di noi tornerà alla sua tenda, nessuno di noi rientrerà in casa sua.

9 B ut now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;

Ecco ora quel che faremo a Ghibea: l’assaliremo, tireremo a sorte chi deve cominciare.

10 a nd we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.

Prenderemo in tutte le tribù d’Israele dieci uomini su cento, cento su mille e mille su diecimila, i quali andranno a cercare dei viveri per il popolo affinché, al loro ritorno, Ghibea di Beniamino sia trattata secondo tutta l’infamia che ha commessa in Israele».

11 S o all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.

Così tutti gli uomini d’Israele si radunarono contro quella città, uniti come fossero un solo uomo.

12 A nd the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?

Le tribù d’Israele mandarono degli uomini in tutte le famiglie di Beniamino a dire: «Che delitto è questo che è stato commesso in mezzo a voi?

13 N ow therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:

Consegnateci dunque quegli uomini, quegli scellerati di Ghibea, perché li mettiamo a morte e togliamo il male da Israele». Ma i figli di Beniamino non vollero dare ascolto alla voce dei loro fratelli, i figli d’Israele.

14 b ut the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.

I figli di Beniamino uscirono dalle loro città e si radunarono a Ghibea per andare a combattere contro i figli d’Israele.

15 A nd the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.

Il censimento che in quel giorno si fece dei figli di Beniamino usciti dalle città fu di ventiseimila uomini capaci di usare la spada, senza contare gli abitanti di Ghibea, che erano settecento uomini scelti.

16 A mong all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.

Fra tutta questa gente c’erano settecento uomini scelti, che erano mancini. Tutti costoro potevano lanciare una pietra con la fionda a un capello, senza fallire il colpo.

17 A nd the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.

Si fece pure il censimento degli uomini d’Israele, non compresi quelli di Beniamino; ed erano in numero di quattrocentomila uomini capaci di usare la spada, tutta gente di guerra.

18 A nd the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first.

I figli d’Israele si mossero, salirono a Betel e consultarono Dio, dicendo: «Chi di noi salirà per primo a combattere contro i figli di Beniamino?» Il Signore rispose: «Giuda salirà per primo».

19 A nd the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.

L’indomani mattina, i figli d’Israele si misero in marcia e si accamparono presso Ghibea.

20 A nd the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.

Gli uomini d’Israele uscirono per combattere contro Beniamino e si disposero in ordine di battaglia contro di loro, presso Ghibea.

21 A nd the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.

Allora i figli di Beniamino uscirono da Ghibea e in quel giorno stesero al suolo, morti, ventiduemila uomini d’Israele.

22 A nd the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.

Il popolo, gli uomini d’Israele, ripresero animo, si disposero di nuovo in ordine di battaglia, nel luogo dove si erano disposti il primo giorno.

23 ( And the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until even, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the Lord said, Go up against him.)

I figli d’Israele salirono e piansero davanti al Signore fino alla sera; e consultarono il Signore, dicendo: «Devo continuare a combattere contro i figli di Beniamino, mio fratello?» Il Signore rispose: «Salite contro di loro».

24 A nd the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.

I figli d’Israele attaccarono i figli di Beniamino il giorno appresso.

25 A nd Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.

I Beniaminiti una seconda volta uscirono da Ghibea contro di loro e stesero al suolo, morti, altri diciottomila uomini dei figli d’Israele, tutti capaci di usare la spada.

26 T hen all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

Allora tutti i figli d’Israele e tutto il popolo salirono a Betel, piansero e rimasero là davanti al Signore e digiunarono quel giorno fino alla sera e offrirono olocausti e sacrifici di riconoscenza davanti al Signore.

27 A nd the children of Israel enquired of the Lord, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

I figli d’Israele consultarono il Signore – l’arca del patto di Dio, in quel tempo, era là

28 a nd Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.

e Fineas, figlio di Eleazar, figlio di Aaronne, ne faceva allora il servizio – e dissero: «Devo continuare ancora a combattere contro i figli di Beniamino mio fratello, o devo cessare?» Il Signore rispose: «Salite, poiché domani ve li darò nelle mani».

29 A nd Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.

Così Israele tese un’imboscata intorno a Ghibea.

30 A nd the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.

I figli d’Israele salirono per la terza volta contro i figli di Beniamino e si disposero in ordine di battaglia presso Ghibea come le altre volte.

31 A nd the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

I figli di Beniamino, usciti per affrontare il popolo, si lasciarono attirare lontano dalla città e cominciarono a colpire e a uccidere, come le altre volte, alcuni del popolo d’Israele, per le strade, delle quali una sale a Betel e l’altra a Ghibea per la campagna; ne uccisero circa trenta.

32 A nd the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.

Allora i figli di Beniamino dissero: «Eccoli sconfitti davanti a noi come la prima volta!» Ma i figli d’Israele dissero: «Fuggiamo e attiriamoli lontano dalla città sulle strade maestre!»

33 A nd all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baal-tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.

Tutti gli uomini d’Israele abbandonarono la loro posizione e si disposero in ordine di battaglia a Baal-Tamar, mentre l’imboscata d’Israele si slanciò fuori dal luogo dove si trovava, da Maare-Ghibea.

34 A nd there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.

Diecimila uomini scelti in tutto Israele giunsero davanti a Ghibea. Il combattimento fu aspro e i Beniaminiti non si accorgevano del disastro che stava per colpirli.

35 A nd the Lord smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.

Il Signore sconfisse Beniamino davanti a Israele; e i figli d’Israele uccisero quel giorno venticinquemilacento uomini di Beniamino, tutti capaci di usare la spada.

36 S o the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.

I figli di Beniamino si accorsero di essere sconfitti; infatti gli Israeliti avevano ceduto terreno a Beniamino, perché confidavano nell’imboscata che avevano tesa contro Ghibea.

37 A nd the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

Quelli dell’imboscata si gettarono prontamente su Ghibea; avanzarono e passarono a fil di spada l’intera città.

38 N ow there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.

C’era un segnale convenuto fra gli uomini d’Israele e quelli dell’imboscata: questi dovevano far salire dalla città un segnale di fumo.

39 A nd when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.

Gli uomini d’Israele avevano dunque voltato le spalle nel combattimento; e quelli di Beniamino avevano cominciato a colpire e uccidere circa trenta uomini d’Israele. Essi dicevano: «Certo, li abbiamo sconfitti come nella prima battaglia!»

40 B ut when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.

Ma quando il segnale, la colonna di fumo, cominciò ad alzarsi dalla città, quelli di Beniamino si voltarono indietro, ed ecco che da tutta la città salivano le fiamme verso il cielo.

41 A nd when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.

Allora gli uomini d’Israele si voltarono e quelli di Beniamino furono spaventati, vedendo il disastro che piombava loro addosso.

42 T herefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.

Essi voltarono le spalle davanti agli uomini d’Israele, e presero la via del deserto; ma gli assalitori si misero alle loro calcagna e uccidevano sul posto quelli che uscivano dalla città.

43 T hus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

Circondarono i Beniaminiti, li inseguirono, furono loro addosso dovunque si fermavano, fino di fronte a Ghibea dal lato dove nasce il sole.

44 A nd there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.

Caddero, dei Beniaminiti, diciottomila uomini, tutta gente di valore.

45 A nd they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.

I Beniaminiti voltarono le spalle e fuggirono verso il deserto, in direzione del masso di Rimmon, e gl’Israeliti ne uccisero per le strade cinquemila, poi continuarono l’inseguimento fino a Ghideom e ne colpirono altri duemila.

46 S o that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

Così il numero totale dei Beniaminiti che caddero quel giorno fu di venticinquemila, tutta gente di valore, capace di usare la spada.

47 B ut six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.

Seicento uomini, che avevano voltato le spalle ed erano fuggiti verso il deserto in direzione del masso di Rimmon, vi rimasero quattro mesi.

48 A nd the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.

Poi gli Israeliti tornarono contro i figli di Beniamino, li passarono a fil di spada, dagli abitanti delle città al bestiame, a tutto quello che si trovava; e diedero alle fiamme tutte le città che trovarono.
