1 A nd it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the Lord, and all Israel with him.

Quando Roboamo fu ben stabilito e fortificato nel regno, egli, e tutto Israele con lui, abbandonò la legge del Signore.

2 A nd it came to pass, that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had transgressed against the Lord,

Il quinto anno del regno di Roboamo, Sisac, re d’Egitto, salì contro Gerusalemme, perch’essi erano stati infedeli al Signore.

3 w ith twelve hundred chariots, and threescore thousand horsemen: and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt; the Lubims, the Sukkiims, and the Ethiopians.

Egli aveva milleduecento carri e sessantamila cavalieri; con lui venne dall’Egitto un popolo innumerevole di Libi, di Succhei e di Etiopi.

4 A nd he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah, and came to Jerusalem.

S’impadronì delle città fortificate che appartenevano a Giuda e giunse fino a Gerusalemme.

5 T hen came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the Lord, Ye have forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.

Il profeta Semaia si recò da Roboamo e dai capi di Giuda, che si erano raccolti a Gerusalemme all’avvicinarsi di Sisac, e disse loro: «Così dice il Signore: “Voi avete abbandonato me, quindi anch’io ho abbandonato voi nelle mani di Sisac”».

6 W hereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, The Lord is righteous.

Allora i prìncipi d’Israele e il re si umiliarono e dissero: «Il Signore è giusto».

7 A nd when the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak.

Quando il Signore vide che si erano umiliati, la parola del Signore fu così rivolta a Semaia: «Essi si sono umiliati; io non li distruggerò, ma concederò loro fra poco un mezzo di scampo, e la mia ira non si rovescerà su Gerusalemme per mezzo di Sisac.

8 N evertheless they shall be his servants; that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries.

Tuttavia gli saranno soggetti, e impareranno la differenza che c’è tra il servire me e il servire i regni degli altri paesi».

9 S o Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king’s house; he took all: he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

Sisac, re d’Egitto, salì dunque contro Gerusalemme e portò via i tesori della casa del Signore e i tesori del palazzo del re. Portò via ogni cosa; prese pure gli scudi d’oro che Salomone aveva fatti.

10 I nstead of which king Rehoboam made shields of brass, and committed them to the hands of the chief of the guard, that kept the entrance of the king’s house.

Il re Roboamo li sostituì con degli scudi di bronzo e li affidò ai capitani della guardia che custodivano la porta del palazzo del re.

11 A nd when the king entered into the house of the Lord, the guard came and fetched them, and brought them again into the guard chamber.

Ogni volta che il re entrava nella casa del Signore, quelli della guardia venivano e li portavano; poi li riportavano nella sala della guardia.

12 A nd when he humbled himself, the wrath of the Lord turned from him, that he would not destroy him altogether: and also in Judah things went well.

Così, perché egli si era umiliato, il Signore allontanò da lui la sua ira e non volle distruggerlo del tutto. Inoltre c’erano ancora delle cose buone in Giuda.

13 S o king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned: for Rehoboam was one and forty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess.

Il re Roboamo dunque si consolidò a Gerusalemme e continuò a regnare. Aveva quarantun anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò diciassette anni a Gerusalemme, la città che il Signore si era scelta fra tutte le tribù d’Israele per stabilirvi il suo nome. Sua madre si chiamava Naama, l’Ammonita.

14 A nd he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the Lord.

Ed egli fece il male, perché non applicò il suo cuore alla ricerca del Signore.

15 N ow the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

Le azioni di Roboamo, le prime e le ultime, sono scritte nelle storie del profeta Semaia e d’Iddo, il veggente, nei registri genealogici. Vi fu guerra continua fra Roboamo e Geroboamo.

16 A nd Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David: and Abijah his son reigned in his stead.

Poi Roboamo si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto nella città di Davide. E Abiia, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.
