1 B e not many of you teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment.

Hermanos míos, no os hagáis maestros muchos de vosotros, sabiendo que recibiremos un juicio más severo.

2 F or in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

Porque todos tropezamos de muchas maneras. Si alguno no tropieza en lo que dice, es un hombre perfecto, capaz también de refrenar todo el cuerpo.

3 N ow if we put the horses' bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also.

Ahora bien, si ponemos el freno en la boca de los caballos para que nos obedezcan, dirigimos también todo su cuerpo.

4 B ehold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth.

Mirad también las naves; aunque son tan grandes e impulsadas por fuertes vientos, son, sin embargo, dirigidas mediante un timón muy pequeño por donde la voluntad del piloto quiere.

5 S o the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!

Así también la lengua es un miembro pequeño, y sin embargo, se jacta de grandes cosas. Mirad, ¡qué gran bosque se incendia con tan pequeño fuego!

6 A nd the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.

Y la lengua es un fuego, un mundo de iniquidad. La lengua está puesta entre nuestros miembros, la cual contamina todo el cuerpo, es encendida por el infierno e inflama el curso de nuestra vida.

7 F or every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind.

Porque todo género de fieras y de aves, de reptiles y de animales marinos, se puede domar y ha sido domado por el género humano,

8 B ut the tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison.

pero ningún hombre puede domar la lengua; es un mal turbulento y lleno de veneno mortal.

9 T herewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God:

Con ella bendecimos a nuestro Señor y Padre, y con ella maldecimos a los hombres, que han sido hechos a la imagen de Dios;

10 o ut of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

de la misma boca proceden bendición y maldición. Hermanos míos, esto no debe ser así.

11 D oth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet water and bitter?

¿Acaso una fuente por la misma abertura echa agua dulce y amarga?

12 C an a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither can salt water yield sweet.

¿Acaso, hermanos míos, puede una higuera producir aceitunas, o una vid higos? Tampoco la fuente de agua salada puede producir agua dulce. Sabiduría de lo alto

13 W ho is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom.

¿Quién es sabio y entendido entre vosotros? Que muestre por su buena conducta sus obras en mansedumbre de sabiduría.

14 B ut if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth.

Pero si tenéis celos amargos y ambición personal en vuestro corazón, no seáis arrogantes y así mintáis contra la verdad.

15 T his wisdom is not a wisdom that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

Esta sabiduría no es la que viene de lo alto, sino que es terrenal, natural, diabólica.

16 F or where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed.

Porque donde hay celos y ambición personal, allí hay confusión y toda cosa mala.

17 B ut the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy.

Pero la sabiduría de lo alto es primeramente pura, después pacífica, amable, condescendiente, llena de misericordia y de buenos frutos, sin vacilación, sin hipocresía.

18 A nd the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.

Y la semilla cuyo fruto es la justicia se siembra en paz por aquellos que hacen la paz.
