1 A t that season Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,

Por aquel tiempo, Herodes el tetrarca oyó la fama de Jesús,

2 a nd said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore do these powers work in him.

y dijo a sus sirvientes: Este es Juan el Bautista. El ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y por eso es que poderes milagrosos actúan en él.

3 F or Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.

Porque Herodes había prendido a Juan, lo había atado y puesto en la cárcel por causa de Herodías, mujer de su hermano Felipe;

4 F or John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

porque Juan le decía: No te es lícito tenerla.

5 A nd when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

Y aunque Herodes quería matarlo, tenía miedo al pueblo, porque consideraban a Juan como un profeta.

6 B ut when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod.

Pero cuando llegó el cumpleaños de Herodes, la hija de Herodías danzó ante ellos y agradó a Herodes.

7 W hereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she should ask.

Por lo cual le prometió con juramento darle lo que ella pidiera.

8 A nd she, being put forward by her mother, saith, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

Ella, instigada por su madre, dijo: Dame aquí, en una bandeja la cabeza de Juan el Bautista.

9 A nd the king was grieved; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat with him, he commanded it to be given;

Y aunque el rey se entristeció, a causa de sus juramentos y de sus invitados, ordenó que se la dieran;

10 a nd he sent and beheaded John in the prison.

y mandó decapitar a Juan en la cárcel.

11 A nd his head was brought on a platter, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

Y trajeron su cabeza en una bandeja y se la dieron a la muchacha, y ella se la llevó a su madre.

12 A nd his disciples came, and took up the corpse, and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

Los discípulos de Juan llegaron y recogieron el cuerpo y lo sepultaron; y fueron y se lo comunicaron a Jesús. Alimentación de los cinco mil

13 N ow when Jesus heard it, he withdrew from thence in a boat, to a desert place apart: and when the multitudes heard thereof, they followed him on foot from the cities.

Al oír esto, Jesús se retiró de allí en una barca, solo, a un lugar desierto; y cuando las multitudes lo supieron, le siguieron a pie desde las ciudades.

14 A nd he came forth, and saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

Y al desembarcar, vio una gran multitud, y tuvo compasión de ellos y sanó a sus enfermos.

15 A nd when even was come, the disciples came to him, saying, The place is desert, and the time is already past; send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.

Al atardecer se le acercaron los discípulos, diciendo: El lugar está desierto y la hora es ya avanzada; despide, pues, a las multitudes para que vayan a las aldeas y se compren alimentos.

16 B ut Jesus said unto them, They have no need to go away; give ye them to eat.

Pero Jesús les dijo: No hay necesidad de que se vayan; dadles vosotros de comer.

17 A nd they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

Entonces ellos le dijeron: No tenemos aquí más que cinco panes y dos peces.

18 A nd he said, Bring them hither to me.

El les dijo: Traédmelos acá.

19 A nd he commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.

Y ordenando a la muchedumbre que se recostara sobre la hierba, tomó los cinco panes y los dos peces, y levantando los ojos al cielo, bendijo los alimentos, y partiendo los panes, se los dio a los discípulos y los discípulos a la multitud.

20 A nd they all ate, and were filled: and they took up that which remained over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.

Y comieron todos y se saciaron. Y recogieron lo que sobró de los pedazos: doce cestas llenas.

21 A nd they that did eat were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Y los que comieron fueron unos cinco mil hombres, sin contar las mujeres y los niños. Jesús anda sobre el mar

22 A nd straightway he constrained the disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before him unto the other side, till he should send the multitudes away.

Enseguida hizo que los discípulos subieran a la barca y fueran delante de El a la otra orilla, mientras El despedía a la multitud.

23 A nd after he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray: and when even was come, he was there alone.

Después de despedir a la multitud, subió al monte a solas para orar; y al anochecer, estaba allí solo.

24 B ut the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves; for the wind was contrary.

Pero la barca estaba ya a muchos estadios de tierra, y era azotada por las olas, porque el viento era contrario.

25 A nd in the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea.

Y a la cuarta vigilia de la noche, Jesús vino a ellos andando sobre el mar.

26 A nd when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a ghost; and they cried out for fear.

Y los discípulos, viéndole andar sobre el mar, se turbaron, y decían: ¡Es un fantasma! Y de miedo, se pusieron a gritar.

27 B ut straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

Pero enseguida Jesús les habló, diciendo: Tened ánimo, soy yo; no temáis.

28 A nd Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto the upon the waters.

Respondiéndole Pedro, dijo: Señor, si eres tú, mándame que vaya a ti sobre las aguas.

29 A nd he said, Come. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked upon the waters to come to Jesus.

Y El dijo: Ven. Y descendiendo Pedro de la barca, caminó sobre las aguas, y fue hacia Jesús.

30 B ut when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.

Pero viendo la fuerza del viento tuvo miedo, y empezando a hundirse gritó, diciendo: ¡Señor, sálvame!

31 A nd immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and saith unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

Y al instante Jesús, extendiendo la mano, lo sostuvo y le dijo: Hombre de poca fe, ¿por qué dudaste ?

32 A nd when they were gone up into the boat, the wind ceased.

Cuando ellos subieron a la barca, el viento se calmó.

33 A nd they that were in the boat worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

Entonces los que estaban en la barca le adoraron, diciendo: En verdad eres Hijo de Dios.

34 A nd when they had crossed over, they came to the land, unto Gennesaret.

Terminada la travesía, bajaron a tierra en Genesaret.

35 A nd when the men of that place knew him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought unto him all that were sick,

Y cuando los hombres de aquel lugar reconocieron a Jesús, enviaron a decirlo por toda aquella comarca de alrededor y le trajeron todos los que tenían algún mal.

36 a nd they besought him that they might only touch the border of his garment: and as many as touched were made whole.

Y le rogaban que les dejara tocar siquiera el borde de su manto; y todos los que lo tocaban quedaban curados.
