1 W ho is like the wise man and who knows the interpretation of a matter? A man’s wisdom illumines him and causes his stern face to beam.

¿Quién como el sabio?; ¿y quién como el que sabe interpretar las cosas? La sabiduría del hombre ilumina su rostro, y la tosquedad de su semblante se mudará.

2 I say, “Keep the command of the king because of the oath before God.

Te aconsejo que guardes el mandamiento del rey y la palabra del juramento de Dios.

3 D o not be in a hurry to leave him. Do not join in an evil matter, for he will do whatever he pleases.”

No te apresures a irte de su presencia, ni en cosa mala persistas; porque él hará todo lo que le plazca.

4 S ince the word of the king is authoritative, who will say to him, “What are you doing?”

Pues la palabra del rey es soberana, ¿y quién le dirá: Qué haces?

5 H e who keeps a royal command experiences no trouble, for a wise heart knows the proper time and procedure.

El que guarda el mandamiento no sufrirá ningún mal; y el corazón del sabio discierne el cuándo y el cómo.

6 F or there is a proper time and procedure for every delight, though a man’s trouble is heavy upon him.

Porque para todo lo que quisieres hay su momento y su modo; porque el mal del hombre es grande sobre él;

7 I f no one knows what will happen, who can tell him when it will happen?

pues no sabe lo que ha de suceder; y el cuándo haya de ser, ¿quién se lo enseñará?

8 N o man has authority to restrain the wind with the wind, or authority over the day of death; and there is no discharge in the time of war, and evil will not deliver those who practice it.

No hay hombre que tenga potestad sobre su aliento para retener el aliento, ni potestad sobre el día de la muerte; y no valen armas en tal guerra, ni la impiedad librará al que la comete.

9 A ll this I have seen and applied my mind to every deed that has been done under the sun wherein a man has exercised authority over another man to his hurt.

Todo esto he visto, y me he fijado en todo lo que se hace debajo del sol, en el tiempo en que el hombre se enseñorea del hombre para mal suyo. Desigualdades de la vida

10 S o then, I have seen the wicked buried, those who used to go in and out from the holy place, and they are soon forgotten in the city where they did thus. This too is futility.

Asimismo he visto a los inicuos sepultados con honra; mas los que frecuentaban el lugar santo fueron luego puestos en olvido en la ciudad donde habían actuado con rectitud. Esto también es vanidad.

11 B ecause the sentence against an evil deed is not executed quickly, therefore the hearts of the sons of men among them are given fully to do evil.

Por cuanto no se ejecuta luego sentencia contra las malas acciones, el corazón de los hijos de los hombres está en ellos dispuesto para hacer el mal.

12 A lthough a sinner does evil a hundred times and may lengthen his life, still I know that it will be well for those who fear God, who fear Him openly.

Aunque el pecador haga mal cien veces, y prolongue sus días, con todo yo también sé que les irá bien a los que temen a Dios, los que temen ante su presencia;

13 B ut it will not be well for the evil man and he will not lengthen his days like a shadow, because he does not fear God.

y que no le irá bien al impío, ni le serán prolongados los días como sombra; por cuanto no teme delante de la presencia de Dios.

14 T here is futility which is done on the earth, that is, there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked. On the other hand, there are evil men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I say that this too is futility.

Hay otra vanidad que se hace sobre la tierra: que hay justos a quienes sucede como si hicieran obras de impíos, y hay impíos a quienes acontece como si hicieran obras de justos. Digo que esto también es vanidad.

15 S o I commended pleasure, for there is nothing good for a man under the sun except to eat and to drink and to be merry, and this will stand by him in his toils throughout the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.

Por eso, yo alabo la alegría; ya que el hombre no tiene ningún otro bien debajo del sol, sino que coma y beba y se alegre; pues eso le queda de su trabajo en los días de su vida que Dios le concede debajo del sol. El amor

16 W hen I gave my heart to know wisdom and to see the task which has been done on the earth (even though one should never sleep day or night),

Yo, pues, dediqué mi corazón a conocer la sabiduría, y a ver las tareas que se hacen sobre la tierra (porque hay quien ni de noche ni de día ve sueño en sus ojos).

17 a nd I saw every work of God, I concluded that man cannot discover the work which has been done under the sun. Even though man should seek laboriously, he will not discover; and though the wise man should say, “I know,” he cannot discover.

Observé también todas las obras de Dios, ya que el hombre no puede alcanzar la obra que se hace debajo del sol; por mucho que se afane el hombre buscándola, no la hallará; aunque diga el sabio que la conoce, no por eso podrá alcanzarla.
