1 N ow Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people, how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

Oyó Jetró sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, todas las cosas que Dios había hecho con Moisés, y con Israel su pueblo, y cómo Jehová había sacado a Israel de Egipto.

2 J ethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Moses’ wife Zipporah, after he had sent her away,

Y tomó Jetró suegro de Moisés a Siporá la mujer de Moisés, después que él la despidió,

3 a nd her two sons, of whom one was named Gershom, for Moses said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.”

y a sus dos hijos; el uno se llamaba Gersón, porque dijo: Forastero he sido en tierra ajena;

4 T he other was named Eliezer, for he said, “ The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.”

y el otro se llamaba Eliezer, porque dijo: El Dios de mi padre me ayudó, y me libró de la espada de Faraón.

5 T hen Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness where he was camped, at the mount of God.

Y Jetró el suegro de Moisés, con los hijos y la mujer de éste, vino a Moisés en el desierto, donde estaba acampado junto al monte de Dios;

6 H e sent word to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”

y mandó a decir a Moisés: Yo tu suegro Jetró vengo a ti, con tu mujer, y sus dos hijos con ella.

7 T hen Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and he bowed down and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare and went into the tent.

Y Moisés salió a recibir a su suegro, y se inclinó, y lo besó; y se preguntaron el uno al otro cómo estaban, y vinieron a la tienda.

8 M oses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had befallen them on the journey, and how the Lord had delivered them.

Y Moisés contó a su suegro todas las cosas que Jehová había hecho a Faraón y a los egipcios por amor de Israel, y todo el trabajo que habían pasado en el camino, y cómo los había librado Jehová.

9 J ethro rejoiced over all the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, in delivering them from the hand of the Egyptians.

Y se alegró Jetró de todo el bien que Jehová había hecho a Israel, al haberlo librado de mano de los egipcios.

10 S o Jethro said, “ Blessed be the Lord who delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

Y Jetró dijo: Bendito sea Jehová, que os libró de mano de los egipcios, y de la mano de Faraón, y que libró al pueblo de la mano de los egipcios.

11 N ow I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; indeed, it was proven when they dealt proudly against the people.”

Ahora conozco que Jehová es más grande que todos los dioses; porque en lo que se ensoberbecieron prevaleció contra ellos.

12 T hen Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

Y tomó Jetró, suegro de Moisés, holocaustos y sacrificios para Dios; y vino Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel para comer con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios. Nombramiento de jueces

13 I t came about the next day that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood about Moses from the morning until the evening.

Aconteció que al día siguiente se sentó Moisés a juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la noche.

14 N ow when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge and all the people stand about you from morning until evening?”

Viendo el suegro de Moisés todo lo que él hacía con el pueblo, dijo: ¿Qué es esto que haces con el pueblo? ¿Por qué te sientas tú solo, y todo el pueblo está delante de ti desde la mañana hasta el anochecer?

15 M oses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.

Y Moisés respondió a su suegro: Porque el pueblo viene a mí para consultar a Dios.

16 W hen they have a dispute, it comes to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor and make known the statutes of God and His laws.” Jethro Counsels Moses

Cuando tienen asuntos, vienen a mí; y yo juzgo entre el uno y el otro, y declaro las ordenanzas de Dios y sus leyes.

17 M oses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you are doing is not good.

Entonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo: No está bien lo que haces.

18 Y ou will surely wear out, both yourself and these people who are with you, for the task is too heavy for you; you cannot do it alone.

Acabarás agotándote del todo, tú, y también este pueblo que está contigo; porque el trabajo es demasiado pesado para ti; no podrás hacerlo tú solo.

19 N ow listen to me: I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You be the people’s representative before God, and you bring the disputes to God,

Oye ahora mi voz; yo te aconsejaré, y Dios estará contigo. Está tú a favor del pueblo delante de Dios, y somete tú los asuntos a Dios.

20 t hen teach them the statutes and the laws, and make known to them the way in which they are to walk and the work they are to do.

Y enseña a ellos las ordenanzas y las leyes, y muéstrales el camino por donde deben andar, y lo que han de hacer.

21 F urthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens.

Además escoge tú de entre todo el pueblo varones de virtud, temerosos de Dios, varones de verdad, que aborrezcan la avaricia; y ponlos sobre el pueblo por jefes de millares, de centenas, de cincuenta y de diez.

22 L et them judge the people at all times; and let it be that every major dispute they will bring to you, but every minor dispute they themselves will judge. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.

Ellos juzgarán al pueblo en todo tiempo; y todo asunto grave lo traerán a ti, y ellos juzgarán todo asunto pequeño. Así aliviarás la carga de sobre ti, y la llevarán ellos contigo.

23 I f you do this thing and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace.”

Si esto haces, y Dios te lo ordena, tú podrás sostenerte, y también todo este pueblo irá en paz a su lugar.

24 S o Moses listened to his father-in-law and did all that he had said.

Y oyó Moisés la voz de su suegro, e hizo todo lo que dijo.

25 M oses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens.

Escogió Moisés varones de virtud de entre todo Israel, y los puso por jefes sobre el pueblo, sobre mil, sobre ciento, sobre cincuenta, y sobre diez.

26 T hey judged the people at all times; the difficult dispute they would bring to Moses, but every minor dispute they themselves would judge.

Y juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo; el asunto difícil lo traían a Moisés, y ellos juzgaban todo asunto pequeño.

27 T hen Moses bade his father-in-law farewell, and he went his way into his own land.

Y despidió Moisés a su suegro, y éste se fue a su tierra.
