1 T here is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it is frequent among men:

2 o ne to whom God giveth riches, wealth, and honour, and he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and a sore evil.

Este, de pildă, un om căruia i -a dat Dumnezeu avere, bogăţii, şi slavă, aşa că nu -i lipseşte nimic din ce -i doreşte sufletul; dar Dumnezeu nu -l lasă să se bucure de ele, ci un străin se bucură de ele: aceasta este o deşertăciune şi un rău mare.

3 I f a man beget a hundred, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, but his soul be not filled with good, and also he have no burial, I say an untimely birth is better than he.

Chiar dacă un om ar avea o sută de copii, şi ar trăi mulţi ani, -oricît de mult i s'ar mări numărul zilelor anilor lui, dar dacă nu i se satură sufletul de bunătăţile agonisite de el, şi dacă nici de înmormîntare n'are parte, eu zic că o stărpitură este mai fericită decît el.

4 F or it cometh in vanity, and departeth in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness;

Căci aceasta din urmă piere odată cu venirea ei, se duce în întunerec, şi numele îi rămîne acoperit cu întunerec;

5 m oreover it hath not seen nor known the sun: this hath rest rather than the other.

n'a văzut, nici n'a cunoscut soarele; şi de aceea este mai bine de ea decît de omul acela.

6 Y ea, though he live twice a thousand years, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?

Şi de ar trăi chiar de două ori o mie de ani un astfel de om, fără să se bucure de fericire, nu merg toate la un loc?

7 A ll the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

Toată truda omului este pentru gura lui, şi totuş poftele nu i se împlinesc niciodată.

8 F or what advantage hath the wise above the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?

Căci ce are înţeleptul mai mult decît nebunul? Ce folos are nenorocitul care ştie să se poarte înaintea celor vii?

9 B etter is the seeing of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this also is vanity and pursuit of the wind.

Mai bine ce vezi cu ochii decît frămîntare de pofte neîmplinite: şi aceasta este o deşertăciune şi goană după vînt.

10 T hat which is hath already been named; and what man is, is known, and that he cannot contend with him that is mightier than he.

Ce este omul, se cunoaşte după numele care i s'a dat de mult: se ştie că este din pămînt, şi nu poate să se judece cu celce este mai tare decît el.

11 F or there are many things that increase vanity: what is man advantaged?

Căci chiar dacă face multă vorbă, care doar înmulţeşte deşertăciunea, ce folos are omul din ea?

12 F or who knoweth what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell man what shall be after him under the sun?

Căci cine ştie ce este bine pentru om în viaţă, în toate zilele vieţii lui de vieţuire deşartă, pe cari le petrece ca o umbră? Şi cine poate să spună omului ce va fi după el supt soare?
