1 A nd he commanded the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in his sack’s mouth.

Mandó José al mayordomo de su casa, diciendo: —Llena de alimento los costales de estos hombres, de todo cuanto puedan llevar, y pon el dinero de cada uno en la boca de su costal.

2 A nd put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, and his corn money. And he did according to the word that Joseph had spoken.

También pondrás mi copa, la copa de plata, en la boca del costal del menor, con el dinero de su trigo. El mayordomo hizo como había dicho José.

3 A s soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.

Al amanecer, los hombres fueron despedidos con sus asnos.

4 A nd when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?

Ya ellos habían salido de la ciudad, pero todavía no se habían alejado, cuando José dijo a su mayordomo: —Levántate y sigue a esos hombres. Cuando los alcances, diles: “¿Por qué habéis pagado mal por bien? ¿Por qué habéis robado mi copa de plata?

5 I s not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.

¿No es ésta en la que bebe mi señor, y la que usa para adivinar? ¡Habéis hecho mal al hacer esto!”

6 A nd he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.

Cuando él los alcanzó, les dijo estas palabras.

7 A nd they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:

Y ellos le respondieron: —¿Por qué dice nuestro señor tales cosas? Nunca tal hagan tus siervos.

8 b ehold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?

Si el dinero que hallamos en la boca de nuestros costales te lo volvimos a traer desde la tierra de Canaán, ¿cómo íbamos a hurtar de casa de tu señor plata ni oro?

9 W ith whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord’s bondmen.

Aquel de tus siervos a quien se le encuentre la copa, que muera, y aun nosotros seremos siervos de mi señor.

10 A nd he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.

Entonces el mayordomo dijo: —También ahora sea conforme a vuestras palabras: aquel a quien se le encuentre será mi siervo; los demás quedaréis sin culpa.

11 T hen they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.

Ellos entonces se dieron prisa, bajó cada uno su costal a tierra y cada cual abrió el suyo.

12 A nd he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

El mayordomo buscó, comenzando por el mayor y terminando por el menor; y la copa fue hallada en el costal de Benjamín.

13 T hen they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.

Entonces ellos rasgaron sus vestidos, cargó cada uno su asno y volvieron a la ciudad.

14 A nd Judah and his brethren came to Joseph’s house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.

Entró Judá con sus hermanos a casa de José, que aún estaba allí, y se postraron en tierra delante de él.

15 A nd Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

Y les dijo José: —¿Qué acción es ésta que habéis hecho? ¿No sabéis que un hombre como yo sabe adivinar?

16 A nd Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

Entonces dijo Judá: —¿Qué diremos a mi señor? ¿Qué hablaremos o con qué nos justificaremos? Dios ha hallado la maldad de tus siervos. Nosotros somos siervos de mi señor, nosotros y también aquel en cuyo poder se halló la copa.

17 A nd he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.

José respondió: —Nunca haga yo tal cosa. El hombre en cuyo poder se halló la copa, ése será mi siervo; vosotros id en paz junto a vuestro padre. Judá intercede por Benjamín

18 T hen Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.

Entonces Judá se acercó a él y le dijo: —¡Ay, señor mío!, te ruego que permitas a tu siervo decir una palabra a oídos de mi señor, y no se encienda tu enojo contra tu siervo, pues tú eres como el faraón.

19 M y lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?

Mi señor preguntó a sus siervos: “¿Tenéis padre o hermano?”

20 A nd we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

Y nosotros respondimos a mi señor: “Sí, tenemos un padre anciano y un hermano joven, pequeño aún, que le nació en su vejez; un hermano suyo murió, y sólo él quedó de los hijos de su madre, y su padre lo ama.”

21 A nd thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.

Tú dijiste a tus siervos: “Traédmelo, pues quiero verlo.”

22 A nd we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

Y nosotros dijimos a mi señor: “El joven no puede dejar a su padre, porque si lo deja, su padre morirá.”

23 A nd thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

Y dijiste a tus siervos: “Si vuestro hermano menor no viene con vosotros, no veréis más mi rostro.”

24 A nd it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

»Aconteció, pues, que cuando llegamos a mi padre, tu siervo, le contamos las palabras de mi señor.

25 A nd our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.

Y dijo nuestro padre: “Volved a comprarnos un poco de alimento.”

26 A nd we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.

Pero nosotros respondimos: “No podemos ir. Si nuestro hermano va con nosotros, iremos, porque no podremos presentarnos ante aquel hombre, si no está con nosotros nuestro hermano menor.”

27 A nd thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:

Entonces tu siervo, mi padre, nos dijo: “Vosotros sabéis que dos hijos me dio a luz mi mujer;

28 a nd the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:

uno de ellos se fue de mi lado, y pienso de cierto que fue despedazado. Hasta ahora no lo he vuelto a ver.

29 a nd if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

Si ahora os lleváis también a éste y le acontece algún desastre, haréis que con dolor desciendan mis canas al seol.”

30 N ow therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;

»Ahora, pues, cuando vuelva yo a tu siervo, mi padre, si el joven no va conmigo, como su vida está ligada a la vida de él,

31 i t shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

sucederá que cuando no vea al joven, morirá; y tus siervos harán que con dolor desciendan al seol las canas de nuestro padre, tu siervo.

32 F or thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.

Como tu siervo salió fiador del joven ante mi padre, diciendo: “Si no te lo traigo de vuelta, entonces yo seré culpable ante mi padre para siempre”,

33 N ow therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

por eso te ruego que se quede ahora tu siervo en lugar del joven como siervo de mi señor, y que el joven vaya con sus hermanos,

34 F or how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.

pues ¿cómo volveré yo a mi padre sin el joven? No podré, por no ver el mal que sobrevendrá a mi padre.
