1 J oash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-sheba.

Siete años tenía Joás cuando comenzó a reinar, y cuarenta años reinó en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Sibia, de Beerseba.

2 A nd Joash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

E hizo Joás lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová todos los días de Joiada, el sacerdote.

3 A nd Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begat sons and daughters.

Joiada lo hizo casar con dos mujeres, y engendró hijos e hijas.

4 A nd it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the Lord.

Después de esto, aconteció que Joás decidió restaurar la casa de Jehová.

5 A nd he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out unto the cities of Judah, and gather of all Israel money to repair the house of your God from year to year, and see that ye hasten the matter. Howbeit the Levites hastened it not.

Reunió a los sacerdotes y a los levitas, y les dijo: «Salid por las ciudades de Judá y recoged dinero de todo Israel, para que cada año sea reparada la casa de vuestro Dios; y vosotros poned diligencia en el asunto.» Pero los levitas no pusieron diligencia.

6 A nd the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the Lord, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?

Por lo cual el rey llamó al sumo sacerdote Joiada y le dijo: «¿Por qué no has procurado que los levitas traigan de Judá y de Jerusalén la ofrenda que Moisés, siervo de Jehová, impuso a la congregación de Israel para el tabernáculo del Testimonio?»

7 F or the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up the house of God; and also all the dedicated things of the house of the Lord did they bestow upon Baalim.

Pues la impía Atalía y sus hijos habían destruido la casa de Dios, y además habían gastado en los ídolos todas las cosas consagradas de la casa de Jehová.

8 A nd at the king’s commandment they made a chest, and set it without at the gate of the house of the Lord.

Mandó, pues, el rey que hicieran un arca, la cual pusieron fuera, a la puerta de la casa de Jehová;

9 A nd they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in to the Lord the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness.

e hicieron pregonar en Judá y en Jerusalén que trajeran a Jehová la ofrenda que Moisés, siervo de Dios, había impuesto a Israel en el desierto.

10 A nd all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end.

Todos los jefes y todo el pueblo se gozaron, trajeron ofrendas y las echaron en el arca hasta llenarla.

11 N ow it came to pass, that at what time the chest was brought unto the king’s office by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the high priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to his place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.

Y cuando llegaba el momento de llevar el arca al secretario del rey por medio de los levitas, si veían que había mucho dinero, venía el escriba del rey y el que estaba puesto por el Sumo sacerdote, llevaban el arca, la vaciaban y la retornaban a su lugar. Así lo hacían de día en día, y recogían mucho dinero.

12 A nd the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the Lord, and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the Lord, and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the Lord.

Luego el rey y Joiada lo daban a los que hacían el trabajo del servicio de la casa de Jehová. Estos contrataban canteros y carpinteros para que repararan la casa de Jehová, y artífices en hierro y bronce para componer la Casa.

13 S o the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God in his state, and strengthened it.

Hacían, pues, los artesanos la obra, y con sus manos la obra quedó restaurada; restituyeron la casa de Dios a su antigua condición, y la consolidaron.

14 A nd when they had finished it, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of the Lord, even vessels to minister, and to offer withal, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jehoiada.

Cuando la terminaron, trajeron al rey y a Joiada lo que quedaba del dinero e hicieron de él utensilios para la casa de Jehová, utensilios para el servicio, morteros, cucharas, vasos de oro y de plata. Y sacrificaron holocaustos continuamente en la casa de Jehová durante todos los días de Joiada.

15 B ut Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died.

Pero Joiada envejeció y murió lleno de días; tenía ciento treinta años cuando murió.

16 A nd they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God, and toward his house.

Lo sepultaron en la Ciudad de David con los reyes, por cuanto había hecho el bien en Israel, con Dios y con su casa.

17 N ow after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.

Muerto Joiada, vinieron los príncipes de Judá y le ofrecieron obediencia al rey. El rey los oyó,

18 A nd they left the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass.

y ellos abandonaron la casa de Jehová, el Dios de sus padres, y sirvieron a los símbolos de Asera y a las imágenes esculpidas. Entonces la ira de Dios vino sobre Judá y Jerusalén por este su pecado.

19 Y et he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the Lord; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.

Y les envió profetas para que los hicieran volver a Jehová, los cuales los amonestaron; pero ellos no los escucharon.

20 A nd the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the Lord, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the Lord, he hath also forsaken you.

Entonces el espíritu de Dios vino sobre Zacarías, hijo del sacerdote Joiada, se puso en pie, en un lugar alto, y dijo al pueblo: «Así ha dicho Dios: ¿Por qué quebrantáis los mandamientos de Jehová? No os vendrá bien por ello, porque por haber dejado a Jehová, él también os abandonará.»

21 A nd they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the Lord.

Pero ellos conspiraron contra él, y por mandato del rey lo apedrearon hasta matarlo, en el patio de la casa de Jehová.

22 T hus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, The Lord look upon it, and require it.

Así el rey Joás no se acordó de la misericordia que Joiada, padre de Zacarías, había tenido con él, sino que mató a su hijo, quien dijo al morir: «¡Jehová lo vea y lo demande!»

23 A nd it came to pass at the end of the year, that the host of Syria came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of Damascus.

A la vuelta del año subió contra él el ejército de Siria, que invadieron a Judá y a Jerusalén, mataron de entre el pueblo a todos los principales, y enviaron todo el botín al rey de Damasco,

24 F or the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men, and the Lord delivered a very great host into their hand, because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.

pues aunque el ejército de Siria había venido con poca gente, Jehová entregó en sus manos un ejército muy numeroso, por cuanto habían abandonado a Jehová, el Dios de sus padres. Así sufrió Joás el castigo merecido.

25 A nd when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.

Cuando se fueron los sirios, dejándolo agobiado por sus dolencias, conspiraron contra él sus siervos, a causa de la sangre de los hijos de Joiada, el sacerdote, y lo hirieron en su cama, donde murió. Lo sepultaron en la Ciudad de David, pero no en los sepulcros de los reyes.

26 A nd these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.

Los que conspiraron contra él fueron Zabad hijo de Simeat, el amonita, y Jozabad hijo de Simrit, el moabita.

27 N ow concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the repairing of the house of God, behold, they are written in the story of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

En lo tocante a los hijos de Joás, la multiplicación que hizo de las rentas y la restauración de la casa de Jehová, está escrito en la historia del libro de los reyes. Y reinó en su lugar su hijo Amasías.
