1 A nd Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

Entonces Pablo, mirando fijamente al Concilio, dijo: —Hermanos, yo con toda buena conciencia he vivido delante de Dios hasta el día de hoy.

2 A nd the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

El sumo sacerdote Ananías ordenó entonces a los que estaban junto a él que lo golpearan en la boca.

3 T hen said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

Entonces Pablo le dijo: —¡Dios te golpeará a ti, pared blanqueada! ¿Estás tú sentado para juzgarme conforme a la Ley, y quebrantando la Ley me mandas golpear?

4 A nd they that stood by said, Revilest thou God’s high priest?

Los que estaban presentes dijeron: —¿Al Sumo sacerdote de Dios insultas?

5 T hen said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

Pablo dijo: —No sabía, hermanos, que fuera el Sumo sacerdote, pues escrito está: “No maldecirás a un príncipe de tu pueblo.”

6 B ut when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

Entonces Pablo, notando que una parte era de saduceos y otra de fariseos, alzó la voz en el Concilio: —Hermanos, yo soy fariseo, hijo de fariseo; acerca de la esperanza y de la resurrección de los muertos se me juzga.

7 A nd when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.

Cuando dijo esto, se produjo discusión entre los fariseos y los saduceos, y la asamblea se dividió,

8 F or the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

porque los saduceos dicen que no hay resurrección ni ángel ni espíritu; pero los fariseos afirman que sí existen.

9 A nd there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees’ part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

Entonces hubo un gran vocerío y, levantándose los escribas de la parte de los fariseos, discutían diciendo: —Ningún mal hallamos en este hombre; que si un espíritu le ha hablado, o un ángel, no resistamos a Dios.

10 A nd when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.

Como la discusión era cada vez más fuerte, el comandante, temiendo que Pablo fuera despedazado por ellos, mandó que bajaran soldados, lo arrebataran de en medio de ellos y lo llevaran a la fortaleza.

11 A nd the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

A la noche siguiente se le presentó el Señor y le dijo: «Ten ánimo, Pablo, pues como has testificado de mí en Jerusalén, así es necesario que testifiques también en Roma.» Complot contra Pablo

12 A nd when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

Cuando fue de día, algunos de los judíos tramaron un complot y se juramentaron bajo maldición, diciendo que no comerían ni beberían hasta que hubieran dado muerte a Pablo.

13 A nd they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

Eran más de cuarenta los que habían hecho esta conjuración,

14 A nd they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

los cuales fueron a los principales sacerdotes y a los ancianos y dijeron: —Nosotros nos hemos juramentado bajo maldición a no gustar nada hasta que hayamos dado muerte a Pablo.

15 N ow therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

Ahora pues, vosotros, con el Concilio, requerid al comandante que lo traiga mañana ante vosotros, con el pretexto de que queréis indagar alguna cosa más cierta acerca de él; y nosotros estaremos listos para matarlo antes que llegue.

16 A nd when Paul’s sister’s son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

Pero el hijo de la hermana de Pablo, oyendo hablar de la celada, fue y entró en la fortaleza y dio aviso a Pablo.

17 T hen Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

Pablo, llamando a uno de los centuriones, dijo: —Lleva a este joven ante el comandante, porque tiene cierto aviso que darle.

18 S o he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

Él entonces, tomándolo, lo llevó al comandante y dijo: —El preso Pablo me llamó y me rogó que trajera ante ti a este joven, que tiene algo que hablarte.

19 T hen the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

El comandante, tomándolo de la mano y retirándose aparte, le preguntó: —¿Qué es lo que tienes que decirme?

20 A nd he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

Él le dijo: —Los judíos han convenido en rogarte que mañana lleves a Pablo ante el Concilio, con el pretexto de que van a inquirir alguna cosa más cierta acerca de él.

21 B ut do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.

Pero tú no los creas, porque más de cuarenta hombres de ellos lo acechan, los cuales se han juramentado bajo maldición a no comer ni beber hasta que le hayan dado muerte; y ahora están listos esperando tu promesa.

22 S o the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

Entonces el comandante despidió al joven, mandándole que a nadie dijera que le había dado aviso de esto. Pablo es enviado a Félix el gobernador

23 A nd he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Cæsarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

Llamando a dos centuriones, mandó que prepararan para la hora tercera de la noche doscientos soldados, setenta jinetes y doscientos lanceros, para que fueran hasta Cesarea;

24 a nd provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

y que prepararan cabalgaduras en que, poniendo a Pablo, lo llevaran a salvo a Félix, el gobernador.

25 A nd he wrote a letter after this manner:

Y escribió una carta en estos términos:

26 C laudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.

«Claudio Lisias al excelentísimo gobernador Félix: Salud.

27 T his man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.

A este hombre, aprehendido por los judíos, y que iban ellos a matar, lo libré yo acudiendo con la tropa, habiendo sabido que era ciudadano romano.

28 A nd when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:

Y queriendo saber la causa por la que lo acusaban, lo llevé al Concilio de ellos;

29 w hom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

y hallé que lo acusaban por cuestiones de la ley de ellos, pero que ningún delito tenía digno de muerte o de prisión.

30 A nd when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.

Pero al ser avisado de asechanzas que los judíos habían tendido contra este hombre, al punto lo he enviado a ti, intimando también a los acusadores que traten delante de ti lo que tengan contra él. Pásalo bien.»

31 T hen the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.

Los soldados, tomando a Pablo como se les ordenó, lo llevaron de noche a Antípatris.

32 O n the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:

Al día siguiente, dejando a los jinetes que fueran con él, volvieron a la fortaleza.

33 w ho, when they came to Cæsarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

Cuando aquellos llegaron a Cesarea y dieron la carta al gobernador, presentaron también a Pablo delante de él.

34 A nd when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;

El gobernador leyó la carta, y preguntó de qué provincia era; y al saber que era de Cilicia,

35 I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod’s judgment hall.

le dijo: —Te oiré cuando vengan tus acusadores. Y mandó que lo vigilaran en el pretorio de Herodes.
