When you sit down to dine with a ruler, Consider carefully what is before you,

2 P on un cuchillo a tu garganta, si tienes mucho apetito.

And put a knife to your throat If you are a man of great appetite.

3 N o codicies sus manjares delicados, porque es pan engañoso. -7-

Do not desire his delicacies, For it is deceptive food.

4 N o te afanes por hacerte rico: sé prudente y desiste.

Do not weary yourself to gain wealth, Cease from your consideration of it.

5 ¿ Has de poner tus ojos en las riquezas, que son nada? De cierto se hacen alas como de águila, y vuelan al cielo. -8-

When you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

6 N o comas pan con el avaro ni codicies sus manjares,

Do not eat the bread of a selfish man, Or desire his delicacies;

7 p orque cuales son sus pensamientos íntimos, tal es él. «Come y bebe», te dirá, pero su corazón no está contigo.

For as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you.

8 V omitarás el bocado que comiste y habrás malgastado tus suaves palabras. -9-

You will vomit up the morsel you have eaten, And waste your compliments.

9 N o hables a oídos del necio, porque menospreciará la prudencia de tus razones. -10-

Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, For he will despise the wisdom of your words.

10 N o remuevas el lindero antiguo ni entres en la heredad de los huérfanos,

Do not move the ancient boundary Or go into the fields of the fatherless,

11 p orque su defensor es el Fuerte: él abogará por la causa de ellos contra ti. -11-

For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their case against you.

12 A plica tu corazón a la enseñanza y tus oídos a las razones sabias. -12-

Apply your heart to discipline And your ears to words of knowledge.

13 N o rehúses corregir al muchacho, porque si lo castigas con vara, no morirá.

Do not hold back discipline from the child, Although you strike him with the rod, he will not die.

14 C astígalo con la vara y librarás su alma del seol. -13-

You shall strike him with the rod And rescue his soul from Sheol.

15 H ijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, también a mí se me alegrará el corazón,

My son, if your heart is wise, My own heart also will be glad;

16 y mis entrañas también se alegrarán cuando tus labios hablen con rectitud. -14-

And my inmost being will rejoice When your lips speak what is right.

17 N o tenga tu corazón envidia de los pecadores, antes persevera en el temor de Jehová en todo tiempo.

Do not let your heart envy sinners, But live in the fear of the Lord always.

18 P orque ciertamente hay un porvenir y tu esperanza no será frustrada. -15-

Surely there is a future, And your hope will not be cut off.

19 E scucha, hijo mío, y sé sabio: endereza tu corazón al buen camino.

Listen, my son, and be wise, And direct your heart in the way.

20 N o te juntes con los bebedores de vino ni con los comilones de carne,

Do not be with heavy drinkers of wine, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat;

21 p orque el bebedor y el comilón se empobrecerán, y el mucho dormir los hará vestir de harapos. -16-

For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe one with rags.

22 E scucha a tu padre, que te engendró; y cuando tu madre envejezca, no la menosprecies.

Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old.

23 C ompra la verdad y no la vendas; y la sabiduría, la enseñanza y la inteligencia.

Buy truth, and do not sell it, Get wisdom and instruction and understanding.

24 M ucho se alegrará el padre del justo, y el que engendra a un sabio se gozará con él.

The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who sires a wise son will be glad in him.

25 ¡ Alégrense tu padre y tu madre! ¡Gócese la que te dio a luz! -17-

Let your father and your mother be glad, And let her rejoice who gave birth to you.

26 D ame, hijo mío, tu corazón y miren tus ojos mis caminos.

Give me your heart, my son, And let your eyes delight in my ways.

27 P orque abismo profundo es la ramera, pozo profundo la extraña.

For a harlot is a deep pit And an adulterous woman is a narrow well.

28 T ambién ella, como un ladrón, acecha, y multiplica entre los hombres los prevaricadores. -18-

Surely she lurks as a robber, And increases the faithless among men.

29 ¿ Para quién serán los ayes? ¿Para quién el dolor? ¿Para quién las rencillas? ¿Para quién las quejas? ¿Para quién las heridas sin razón? ¿Para quién los ojos enrojecidos?

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?

30 P ara los que no dejan el vino, para los que van probando mixturas.

Those who linger long over wine, Those who go to taste mixed wine.

31 ¡ No mires el vino cuando rojea, cuando resplandece su color en la copa! Se entra suavemente,

Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it goes down smoothly;

32 p ero al fin muerde como una serpiente, causa dolor como un áspid.

At the last it bites like a serpent And stings like a viper.

33 T us ojos verán cosas extrañas y tu corazón dirá cosas perversas.

Your eyes will see strange things And your mind will utter perverse things.

34 S erá como si yacieras en medio del mar o como si yacieras en la punta de un mástil.

And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea, Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.

35 Y dirás: «Me hirieron, mas no me dolió; me azotaron, pero no lo sentí; cuando despierte, volveré en busca de más.»

“They struck me, but I did not become ill; They beat me, but I did not know it. When shall I awake? I will seek another drink.”
