1 E l sumo sacerdote dijo entonces: —¿Es esto así?

The high priest said, “Are these things so?”

2 E steban dijo: —Hermanos y padres, oíd: El Dios de la gloria se apareció a nuestro padre Abraham cuando aún estaba en Mesopotamia, antes que viviera en Harán,

And he said, “Hear me, brethren and fathers! The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,

3 y le dijo: “Sal de tu tierra y de tu parentela y vete a la tierra que yo te mostraré.”

and said to him, ‘ Leave your country and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.’

4 E ntonces salió de la tierra de los caldeos y habitó en Harán; y de allí, cuando murió su padre, Dios lo trasladó a esta tierra, en la cual vosotros habitáis ahora.

Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. From there, after his father died, God had him move to this country in which you are now living.

5 N o le dio herencia en ella ni aun para asentar un pie, pero prometió dársela en posesión a él y a su descendencia después de él, aunque él aún no tenía hijo.

But He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground, and yet, even when he had no child, He promised that He would give it to him as a possession, and to his descendants after him.

6 D ios le dijo que su descendencia sería extranjera en tierra ajena, y que los reducirían a servidumbre y los maltratarían por cuatrocientos años.

But God spoke to this effect, that his descendants would be aliens in a foreign land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.

7 “ Pero yo juzgaré” —dijo Dios— “a la nación de la cual serán siervos; y después de esto saldrán y me servirán en este lugar.”

‘ And whatever nation to which they will be in bondage I Myself will judge,’ said God, ‘ and after that they will come out and serve Me in this place.’

8 L e dio el pacto de la circuncisión, y así Abraham engendró a Isaac, y lo circuncidó al octavo día; e Isaac a Jacob, y Jacob a los doce patriarcas.

And He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

9 » Los patriarcas, movidos por envidia, vendieron a José para Egipto; pero Dios estaba con él

“The patriarchs became jealous of Joseph and sold him into Egypt. Yet God was with him,

10 y lo libró de todas sus tribulaciones, y le dio gracia y sabiduría delante del faraón, rey de Egipto, el cual lo puso por gobernador sobre Egipto y sobre toda su casa.

and rescued him from all his afflictions, and granted him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he made him governor over Egypt and all his household.

11 » Hubo entonces hambre en toda la tierra de Egipto y de Canaán, y gran tribulación; y nuestros padres no hallaban alimentos.

“Now a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction with it, and our fathers could find no food.

12 C uando oyó Jacob que había trigo en Egipto, envió a nuestros padres la primera vez.

But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our fathers there the first time.

13 Y en la segunda, José se dio a conocer a sus hermanos, y fue manifestado al faraón el linaje de José.

On the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family was disclosed to Pharaoh.

14 J osé envió a buscar a su padre Jacob y a toda su familia, en número de setenta y cinco personas.

Then Joseph sent word and invited Jacob his father and all his relatives to come to him, seventy-five persons in all.

15 A sí descendió Jacob a Egipto, donde murió él y también nuestros padres,

And Jacob went down to Egypt and there he and our fathers died.

16 l os cuales fueron trasladados a Siquem y puestos en el sepulcro que Abraham, a precio de dinero, había comprado a los hijos de Hamor en Siquem.

From there they were removed to Shechem and laid in the tomb which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

17 » Pero cuando se acercaba el tiempo de la promesa que Dios había jurado a Abraham, el pueblo creció y se multiplicó en Egipto,

“But as the time of the promise was approaching which God had assured to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

18 h asta que se levantó en Egipto otro rey que no conocía a José.

until there arose another king over Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph.

19 E ste rey, usando de astucia con nuestro pueblo, maltrató a nuestros padres hasta obligarlos a que expusieran a la muerte a sus niños para que no se propagaran.

It was he who took shrewd advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers so that they would expose their infants and they would not survive.

20 E n aquel mismo tiempo nació Moisés, y fue agradable a Dios; y fue criado tres meses en casa de su padre.

It was at this time that Moses was born; and he was lovely in the sight of God, and he was nurtured three months in his father’s home.

21 P ero siendo expuesto a la muerte, la hija del faraón lo recogió y lo crió como a hijo suyo.

And after he had been set outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and nurtured him as her own son.

22 M oisés fue instruido en toda la sabiduría de los egipcios; y era poderoso en sus palabras y obras.

Moses was educated in all the learning of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words and deeds.

23 » Cuando cumplió la edad de cuarenta años, le vino al corazón el visitar a sus hermanos, los hijos de Israel.

But when he was approaching the age of forty, it entered his mind to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.

24 Y al ver a uno que era maltratado, lo defendió, y dando muerte al egipcio, vengó al oprimido.

And when he saw one of them being treated unjustly, he defended him and took vengeance for the oppressed by striking down the Egyptian.

25 É l pensaba que sus hermanos comprendían que Dios les daría libertad por mano suya, pero ellos no lo habían entendido así.

And he supposed that his brethren understood that God was granting them deliverance through him, but they did not understand.

26 A l día siguiente se presentó a unos de ellos que reñían, e intentaba ponerlos en paz, diciéndoles: “Hermanos sois, ¿por qué os maltratáis el uno al otro?”

On the following day he appeared to them as they were fighting together, and he tried to reconcile them in peace, saying, ‘Men, you are brethren, why do you injure one another?’

27 E ntonces el que maltrataba a su prójimo lo rechazó, diciendo: “¿Quién te ha puesto por gobernante y juez sobre nosotros?

But the one who was injuring his neighbor pushed him away, saying, ‘ Who made you a ruler and judge over us ?

28 ¿ Quieres tú matarme como mataste ayer al egipcio?”

You do not mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday, do you ?’

29 A l oír esta palabra, Moisés huyó y vivió como extranjero en tierra de Madián, donde engendró dos hijos.

At this remark, Moses fled and became an alien in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.

30 » Pasados cuarenta años, un ángel se le apareció en el desierto del monte Sinaí, en la llama de fuego de una zarza.

“After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning thorn bush.

31 E ntonces Moisés, mirando, se maravilló de la visión; y al acercarse para observar, vino a él la voz del Señor:

When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he approached to look more closely, there came the voice of the Lord:

32 “ Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac y el Dios de Jacob.” Y Moisés, temblando, no se atrevía a mirar.

‘ I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.’ Moses shook with fear and would not venture to look.

33 L e dijo el Señor: “Quita el calzado de tus pies, porque el lugar en que estás es tierra santa.

But the Lord said to him, ‘ Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.

34 C iertamente he visto la aflicción de mi pueblo que está en Egipto, he oído su gemido y he descendido para librarlos. Ahora, pues, ven, te enviaré a Egipto.”

I have certainly seen the oppression of My people in Egypt and have heard their groans, and I have come down to rescue them; come now, and I will send you to Egypt.’

35 » A este Moisés, a quien habían rechazado diciendo: “¿Quién te ha puesto por gobernante y juez?”, a éste envió Dios como gobernante y libertador por mano del ángel que se le apareció en la zarza.

“This Moses whom they disowned, saying, ‘ Who made you a ruler and a judge ?’ is the one whom God sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer with the help of the angel who appeared to him in the thorn bush.

36 É ste los sacó, habiendo hecho prodigios y señales en tierra de Egipto, en el Mar Rojo y en el desierto por cuarenta años.

This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.

37 E ste Moisés es el que dijo a los hijos de Israel: “Profeta os levantará el Señor vuestro Dios de entre vuestros hermanos, como a mí; a él oiréis.”

This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, ‘ God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren.’

38 É ste es aquel Moisés que estuvo en la congregación en el desierto con el ángel que le hablaba en el monte Sinaí, y con nuestros padres, y que recibió palabras de vida para darnos.

This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness together with the angel who was speaking to him on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received living oracles to pass on to you.

39 » Pero nuestros padres no quisieron obedecer, sino que lo desecharon, y en sus corazones se volvieron a Egipto

Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him, but repudiated him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt,

40 c uando dijeron a Aarón: “Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros, porque a este Moisés que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto no sabemos qué le haya acontecido.”

saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us; for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt — we do not know what happened to him.’

41 E ntonces hicieron un becerro, ofrecieron sacrificio al ídolo y en las obras de sus manos se regocijaron.

At that time they made a calf and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.

42 D ios se apartó de ellos y los entregó a que rindieran culto al ejército del cielo; como está escrito en el libro de los profetas: »“¿Acaso me ofrecisteis víctimas y sacrificios en el desierto por cuarenta años, casa de Israel?

But God turned away and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘ It was not to Me that you offered victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, was it, O house of Israel ?

43 A ntes bien llevasteis el tabernáculo de Moloc y la estrella de vuestro dios Refán, figuras que os hicisteis para adorarlas. Os transportaré, pues, más allá de Babilonia.”

You also took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of the god Rompha, the images which you made to worship. I also will remove you beyond Babylon.’

44 » Tuvieron nuestros padres el Tabernáculo del testimonio en el desierto, como había ordenado Dios cuando dijo a Moisés que lo hiciera conforme al modelo que había visto.

“Our fathers had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He who spoke to Moses directed him to make it according to the pattern which he had seen.

45 E l cual, recibido a su vez por nuestros padres, lo introdujeron con Josué al tomar posesión de la tierra de los gentiles, a los cuales Dios arrojó de la presencia de nuestros padres hasta los días de David.

And having received it in their turn, our fathers brought it in with Joshua upon dispossessing the nations whom God drove out before our fathers, until the time of David.

46 É ste halló gracia delante de Dios y pidió proveer tabernáculo para el Dios de Jacob.

David found favor in God’s sight, and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.

47 P ero fue Salomón quien le edificó Casa,

But it was Solomon who built a house for Him.

48 s i bien el Altísimo no habita en templos hechos de mano, como dice el profeta:

However, the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands; as the prophet says:

49 » “El cielo es mi trono y la tierra el estrado de mis pies. ¿Qué casa me edificaréis? —dice el Señor—; ¿O cuál es el lugar de mi reposo?

‘ Heaven is My throne, And earth is the footstool of My feet; What kind of house will you build for Me ?’ says the Lord, ‘ Or what place is there for My repose ?

50 ¿ No hizo mi mano todas estas cosas?”

‘ Was it not My hand which made all these things ?’

51 » ¡Duros de cerviz! ¡Incircuncisos de corazón y de oídos! Vosotros resistís siempre al Espíritu Santo; como vuestros padres, así también vosotros.

“You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.

52 ¿ A cuál de los profetas no persiguieron vuestros padres? Y mataron a los que anunciaron de antemano la venida del Justo, a quien vosotros ahora habéis entregado y matado;

Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become;

53 v osotros que recibisteis la Ley por disposición de ángeles, y no la guardasteis.

you who received the law as ordained by angels, and yet did not keep it.” Stephen Put to Death

54 O yendo estas cosas, se enfurecían en sus corazones y crujían los dientes contra él.

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the quick, and they began gnashing their teeth at him.

55 P ero Esteban, lleno del Espíritu Santo, puestos los ojos en el cielo, vio la gloria de Dios y a Jesús que estaba a la diestra de Dios,

But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;

56 y dijo: «Veo los cielos abiertos, y al Hijo del hombre que está a la diestra de Dios.»

and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”

57 E ntonces ellos, gritando, se taparon los oídos y arremetieron a una contra él.

But they cried out with a loud voice, and covered their ears and rushed at him with one impulse.

58 L o echaron fuera de la ciudad y lo apedrearon. Los testigos pusieron sus ropas a los pies de un joven que se llamaba Saulo.

When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning him; and the witnesses laid aside their robes at the feet of a young man named Saul.

59 M ientras lo apedreaban, Esteban oraba y decía: «Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu.»

They went on stoning Stephen as he called on the Lord and said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”

60 Y puesto de rodillas, clamó a gran voz: «Señor, no les tomes en cuenta este pecado.» Habiendo dicho esto, durmió.

Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” Having said this, he fell asleep.
