2 P orque ¿qué galardón Dios me daría desde arriba? ¿Qué heredad el Omnipotente desde las alturas?

“And what is the portion of God from above Or the heritage of the Almighty from on high?

3 ¿ Es que no hay desgracia para el malvado, infortunio para los que hacen iniquidad?

“Is it not calamity to the unjust And disaster to those who work iniquity?

4 ¿ Acaso él no ve mis caminos y cuenta todos mis pasos?

“Does He not see my ways And number all my steps?

5 » ¿Es que yo anduve con mentiras, o corrieron mis pies al engaño?

“If I have walked with falsehood, And my foot has hastened after deceit,

6 ¡ Que Dios me pese en la balanza de la justicia y reconocerá mi integridad!

Let Him weigh me with accurate scales, And let God know my integrity.

7 S i mis pasos se apartaron del camino, si mi corazón se fue tras mis ojos, si algo se pegó a mis manos,

“If my step has turned from the way, Or my heart followed my eyes, Or if any spot has stuck to my hands,

8 ¡ siembre yo y otro coma! ¡Sea arrancada mi siembra!

Let me sow and another eat, And let my crops be uprooted.

9 » Si fue engañado mi corazón por alguna mujer, si estuve acechando a la puerta de mi prójimo,

“If my heart has been enticed by a woman, Or I have lurked at my neighbor’s doorway,

10 ¡ muela para otro mi mujer y sobre ella otros se encorven!

May my wife grind for another, And let others kneel down over her.

11 P orque eso es maldad e iniquidad que han de castigar los jueces.

“For that would be a lustful crime; Moreover, it would be an iniquity punishable by judges.

12 P orque eso es un fuego que devoraría hasta el Abadón y consumiría toda mi hacienda.

“For it would be fire that consumes to Abaddon, And would uproot all my increase.

13 » Si hubiera yo menospreciado el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva cuando ellos pleiteaban conmigo,

“If I have despised the claim of my male or female slaves When they filed a complaint against me,

14 ¿ qué haría cuando Dios se levantara? Y cuando él me preguntara, ¿qué le respondería?

What then could I do when God arises? And when He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?

15 E l que en el vientre me hizo a mí, ¿no lo hizo a él? ¿Y no fue uno y el mismo quien nos formó en la matriz?

“Did not He who made me in the womb make him, And the same one fashion us in the womb?

16 » Si he impedido a los pobres quedar satisfechos, si he hecho decaer los ojos de la viuda,

“If I have kept the poor from their desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

17 s i he comido yo solo mi bocado y no comió de él el huérfano

Or have eaten my morsel alone, And the orphan has not shared it

18 ( porque desde mi juventud creció conmigo como con un padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fui guía de la viuda);

(But from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And from infancy I guided her),

19 s i he visto a alguno perecer por falta de vestido, por carecer de abrigo el necesitado;

If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering,

20 s i no me bendijeron sus espaldas al calentarse con el vellón de mis ovejas;

If his loins have not thanked me, And if he has not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep,

21 s i alcé contra el huérfano mi mano, aun viendo que en la puerta estaban de mi parte,

If I have lifted up my hand against the orphan, Because I saw I had support in the gate,

22 ¡ que mi espalda se caiga de mi hombro y se quiebre el hueso de mi brazo!

Let my shoulder fall from the socket, And my arm be broken off at the elbow.

23 P orque he temido el castigo de Dios, contra cuya majestad yo no tendría poder.

“For calamity from God is a terror to me, And because of His majesty I can do nothing.

24 » Si puse en el oro mi esperanza, y le dije al oro: “Mi confianza está en ti”;

“If I have put my confidence in gold, And called fine gold my trust,

25 s i me alegré de que mis riquezas se multiplicaran y de tener mucho en mi mano;

If I have gloated because my wealth was great, And because my hand had secured so much;

26 s i he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía o a la luna en su esplendor,

If I have looked at the sun when it shone Or the moon going in splendor,

27 y mi corazón fue engañado en secreto, y mi boca besó mi mano,

And my heart became secretly enticed, And my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,

28 e so también sería una maldad digna de juicio, porque habría negado al Dios soberano.

That too would have been an iniquity calling for judgment, For I would have denied God above.

29 » Si me alegré con el quebrantamiento del que me aborrecía y me regocijé cuando le sobrevino el mal

“Have I rejoiced at the extinction of my enemy, Or exulted when evil befell him?

30 ( aun cuando mi lengua no entregué al pecado para pedir la maldición para su alma);

“ No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin By asking for his life in a curse.

31 s i mis siervos no decían: “¿Quién hay que no se haya saciado con su carne?”

“Have the men of my tent not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been satisfied with his meat’?

32 ( porque ningún forastero pasaba fuera la noche, sino que yo abría mis puertas al caminante);

“The alien has not lodged outside, For I have opened my doors to the traveler.

33 s i como humano que soy encubrí mis transgresiones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad,

“Have I covered my transgressions like Adam, By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,

34 p orque temía a la multitud, que era grande, y me atemorizaba el menosprecio de las familias, y entonces callaba y no salía de mi puerta...

Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, And kept silent and did not go out of doors?

35 ¡ Quién me diera ser escuchado! Pero mi confianza es que el Omnipotente será mi testigo, aunque mi adversario me lleve a juicio.

“Oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature; Let the Almighty answer me! And the indictment which my adversary has written,

36 C iertamente yo lo cargaría sobre mi hombro, me lo ceñiría como una corona.

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, I would bind it to myself like a crown.

37 Y o le daría cuenta de todos mis pasos; como un príncipe me presentaría delante de él.

“I would declare to Him the number of my steps; Like a prince I would approach Him.

38 » Si mi tierra clama contra mí y lloran todos sus surcos;

“If my land cries out against me, And its furrows weep together;

39 s i he comido su sustancia sin pagar o he afligido el alma de sus dueños,

If I have eaten its fruit without money, Or have caused its owners to lose their lives,

40 ¡ que en lugar de trigo me nazcan abrojos, y espinos en lugar de cebada!» Aquí terminan las palabras de Job.

Let briars grow instead of wheat, And stinkweed instead of barley.” The words of Job are ended.
