1 V ai de cetatea vărsătoare de sânge, plină de minciună, plină de jaf şi care nu renunţă la a prăda!

Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not;

2 S e aude pocnetul biciului şi uruitul roţii, galopul cailor şi huruitul carelor!

The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots.

3 C ălăreţii se năpustesc, săbiile scânteiază, iar suliţele fulgeră! Peste tot sunt o mulţime de morţi, grămezi de cadavre, hoituri fără număr, oameni care se împiedică de hoituri –

The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:

4 ş i aceasta din cauza multelor desfrânări ale prostituatei, fermecătoarea, stăpâna vrăjitoriilor, care subjuga neamuri prin desfrânările ei şi clanuri prin vrăjitoriile ei.

Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

5 « Iată că sunt împotriva ta! zice Domnul Oştirilor. Îţi voi ridica poalele în cap şi voi arăta neamurilor goliciunea ta, iar regatelor – ruşinea ta!

Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.

6 V oi arunca murdării peste tine, te voi înjosi şi te voi face o privelişte pentru toţi.

And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock.

7 A tunci toţi cei ce te vor vedea vor fugi de tine şi vor zice: ’Ninive este pustiită! Cine o va plânge?‘ Unde să-ţi caut mângâietori?»

And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?

8 E şti tu mai bună decât No-Amon, cetatea care era aşezată pe Nil, înconjurată de ape, a cărei fortăreaţă era marea al cărei zid era apa?

Art thou better than populous No, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea?

9 C uş şi Egiptul erau tăria ei nemărginită, iar Put şi Lubim îi erau ajutoare.

Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers.

10 Ş i totuşi a fost exilată, a trebuit să plece în captivitate! Chiar şi copiii ei au fost zdrobiţi la fiecare capăt de drum! Au tras la sorţ pentru fruntaşii ei, şi toţi mai marii ei au fost puşi în lanţuri.

Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

11 Ş i tu te vei îmbăta şi te vei ascunde! Şi tu vei căuta un refugiu în faţa duşmanului!

Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy.

12 T oate fortificaţiile tale sunt ca nişte smochini plini cu cele dintâi roade; dacă sunt scuturate, ele cad în gura celui ce vrea să le mănânce.

All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.

13 I ată, cei din oştirea ta sunt ca nişte femei în mijlocul tău! Porţile ţării tale sunt larg deschise duşmanilor tăi; focul le-a mistuit zăvoarele.

Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.

14 S coate-ţi apă pentru asediu! Întăreşte-ţi fortificaţiile! Frământă lutul! Calcă în picioare mortarul! Pregăteşte cuptorul de cărămidă!

Draw thee waters for the siege, fortify thy strong holds: go into clay, and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln.

15 A colo te va mistui focul, iar sabia te va tăia; te va mânca, ca o lăcustă! V-aţi tot înmulţit ca lăcusta Ielek, v-aţi tot înmulţit ca lăcusta Arbe!

There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locusts.

16 Ţ i-ai înmulţit negustorii mai mult decât stelele cerului. Ei însă prădează ca lăcusta Ielek şi apoi zboară.

Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and fleeth away.

17 V oievozii tăi sunt ca lăcusta Arbe, iar scribii tăi ca un roi de lăcuste care se aşază pe ziduri într-o zi răcoroasă, dar care, atunci când răsare soarele, zboară şi nu se mai cunoaşte locul unde au fost.

Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

18 P ăstorii tăi au aţipit, împărate al Asiriei, iar nobilii tăi se odihnesc! Poporul tău a fost împrăştiat pe munţi şi nu este nimeni să-i adune!

Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.

19 N u este alinare pentru rana ta, iar lovitura-ţi este fatală! Toţi cei ce aud veşti despre tine, bat din palme, căci cine nu a fost atins de cruzimea ta fără margini?!“

There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?
