1 „ Israel era o vie mănoasă care dădea roade pentru sine. Cu cât avea mai multe roade, cu atât îşi înmulţea altarele; cu cât îi era mai bogată ţara, cu atât îşi înfrumuseţa mai mult stâlpii sacri.

Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images.

2 I nima le este împărţită. Acum dar să-şi poarte osânda! El le va dărâma altarele şi le va distruge stâlpii sacri.

Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images.

3 A poi vor zice: «Nu avem rege pentru că nu ne-am temut de Domnul! Dar şi dacă am avea un rege, ce ar putea face acesta pentru noi?»

For now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the Lord; what then should a king do to us?

4 E i rostesc cuvinte fără rost şi, cu jurăminte false, încheie legăminte. De aceea litigiile răsar ca pelinul pe brazdele ogorului.

They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.

5 L ocuitorii Samariei sunt înmărmuriţi din pricina viţelului din Bet-Aven. Atât poporul lui, cât şi preoţii lui îl jelesc – cei care s-au bucurat de gloria lui – căci este luat de la ei şi dus în exil.

The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.

6 D a, chiar el va fi dus în Asiria, drept tribut pentru măreţul împărat. Ruşinea îl va cuprinde pe Efraim şi Israel se va ruşina de idolul său.

It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.

7 S amaria va fi distrusă, iar regele ei va fi ca o crenguţă dusă de ape.

As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water.

8 Î nălţimile răutăţii, unde a păcătuit Israel, vor fi nimicite. Spini şi mărăcini vor creşte pe altarele lor. Atunci vor începe să zică munţilor: «Acoperiţi-ne!» şi dealurilor: «Cădeţi peste noi!»

The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.

9 Î ncă de pe vremea Ghivei ai început să păcătuieşti, Israele, şi ai continuat tot aşa! Oare nu i-a prăpădit războiul pe nelegiuiţii din Ghiva?

O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them.

10 C ând voi dori, îi voi disciplina! Popoarele vor fi strânse împotriva lor, ca să-i lege pentru îndoita lor fărădelege!

It is in my desire that I should chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows.

11 E fraim este o juncă deprinsă la jug, căreia îi place să treiere. De aceea îi voi pune un jug pe gâtul ei frumos. Eu voi mâna Efraimul, Iuda va trebui să are, iar Iacov va trebui să grăpeze.

And Ephraim is as an heifer that is taught, and loveth to tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods.

12 S emănaţi dreptatea şi seceraţi roada îndurării! Desţeleniţi-vă un ogor nou, căci este vremea să-L căutaţi pe Domnul, până când El va veni şi va turna dreptatea peste voi.

Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

13 A ţi cultivat însă răutatea şi aţi secerat nedreptatea; aţi mâncat rodul minciunii. Pentru că te-ai încrezut în căile tale şi în mulţimea vitejilor tăi,

Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.

14 d e aceea un strigăt de luptă se va ridica împotriva poporului tău şi toate fortăreţele tale vor fi devastate, aşa cum a devastat Şalman Bet-Arbel, cu prilejul războiului, când mamele au fost măcelărite peste copiii lor.

Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children.

15 T ot aşa vă va face şi vouă, celor din Betel, căci răutatea voastră este fără măsură! Până în zorii zilei, regele lui Israel va fi distrus cu desăvârşire.“

So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off.
