Better is open rebuke Than love that is hidden.

6 L es blessures d'un ami prouvent sa fidélité, Mais les baisers d'un ennemi sont trompeurs.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; But the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

7 C elui qui est rassasié foule aux pieds le rayon de miel, Mais celui qui a faim trouve doux tout ce qui est amer.

The full soul loatheth a honeycomb; But to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

8 C omme l'oiseau qui erre loin de son nid, Ainsi est l'homme qui erre loin de son lieu.

As a bird that wandereth from her nest, So is a man that wandereth from his place.

9 L 'huile et les parfums réjouissent le coeur, Et les conseils affectueux d'un ami sont doux.

Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; So doth the sweetness of a man's friend that cometh of hearty counsel.

10 N 'abandonne pas ton ami et l'ami de ton père, Et n'entre pas dans la maison de ton frère au jour de ta détresse; Mieux vaut un voisin proche qu'un frère éloigné.

Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; And go not to thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: Better is a neighbor that is near than a brother far off.

11 M on fils, sois sage, et réjouis mon coeur, Et je pourrai répondre à celui qui m'outrage.

My son, be wise, and make my heart glad, That I may answer him that reproacheth me.

12 L 'homme prudent voit le mal et se cache; Les simples avancent et sont punis.

A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; But the simple pass on, and suffer for it.

13 P rends son vêtement, car il a cautionné autrui; Exige de lui des gages, à cause des étrangers.

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; And hold him in pledge that is surety for a foreign woman.

14 S i l'on bénit son prochain à haute voix et de grand matin, Cela est envisagé comme une malédiction.

He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, It shall be counted a curse to him.

15 U ne gouttière continue dans un jour de pluie Et une femme querelleuse sont choses semblables.

A continual dropping in a very rainy day And a contentious woman are alike:

16 C elui qui la retient retient le vent, Et sa main saisit de l'huile.

He that would restrain her restraineth the wind; And his right hand encountereth oil.

17 C omme le fer aiguise le fer, Ainsi un homme excite la colère d'un homme.

Iron sharpeneth iron; So a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

18 C elui qui soigne un figuier en mangera le fruit, Et celui qui garde son maître sera honoré.

Whoso keepeth the fig-tree shall eat the fruit thereof; And he that regardeth his master shall be honored.

19 C omme dans l'eau le visage répond au visage, Ainsi le coeur de l'homme répond au coeur de l'homme.

As in water face answereth to face, So the heart of man to man.

20 L e séjour des morts et l'abîme sont insatiables; De même les yeux de l'homme sont insatiables.

Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied; And the eyes of man are never satisfied.

21 L e creuset est pour l'argent, et le fourneau pour l'or; Mais un homme est jugé d'après sa renommée.

The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; And a man is tried by his praise.

22 Q uand tu pilerais l'insensé dans un mortier, Au milieu des grains avec le pilon, Sa folie ne se séparerait pas de lui.

Though thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with bruised grain, Yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

23 C onnais bien chacune de tes brebis, Donne tes soins à tes troupeaux;

Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, And look well to thy herds:

24 C ar la richesse ne dure pas toujours, Ni une couronne éternellement.

For riches are not for ever: And doth the crown endure unto all generations?

25 L e foin s'enlève, la verdure paraît, Et les herbes des montagnes sont recueillies.

The hay is carried, and the tender grass showeth itself, And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in.

26 L es agneaux sont pour te vêtir, Et les boucs pour payer le champ;

The lambs are for thy clothing, And the goats are the price of the field;

27 L e lait des chèvres suffit à ta nourriture, à celle de ta maison, Et à l'entretien de tes servantes.

And there will be goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, And maintenance for thy maidens.
