1 S o I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

¶ Me volví y vi todas las violencias que se hacen debajo del sol; y he aquí las lágrimas de los oprimidos, y que no tienen consolador; y que la fuerza estaba en la mano de sus opresores, y para ellos no había consolador.

2 W herefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

Y alabé yo a los finados que ya murieron, más que a los vivientes que hasta ahora están vivos.

3 Y ea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

Y tuve por mejor que ellos al que no ha sido aún, porque no ha visto las malas obras que se hacen debajo del sol.

4 A gain, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

¶ He visto asimismo que todo trabajo y toda rectitud de obras mueve la envidia del hombre contra su prójimo. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

5 T he fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

El loco dobla sus manos y come su misma carne.

6 B etter is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

Más vale un puño lleno con descanso, que ambos puños llenos con trabajo y aflicción de espíritu.

7 T hen I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.

¶ Yo me volví otra vez, y vi otra vanidad debajo del sol.

8 T here is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

Es el hombre solo y sin sucesor; que ni tiene hijo ni hermano; mas nunca cesa de trabajar, ni aun sus ojos se sacian de sus riquezas, ni piensa: ¿Para quién trabajo yo, y defraudo mi alma del bien? También esto es vanidad, y duro trabajo.

9 T wo are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

Mejores son dos que uno; porque tienen mejor paga de su trabajo.

10 F or if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

Porque si cayeren, el uno levantará a su compañero; mas ¡ay del solo! que cuando cayere, no habrá segundo que lo levante.

11 A gain, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

También si dos durmieren juntos, se calentarán; mas ¿cómo se calentará uno solo?

12 A nd if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Y si alguno prevaleciere contra uno, dos estarán contra él; y cordón de tres dobleces no presto se rompe.

13 B etter is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

¶ Mejor es el niño pobre y sabio, que el rey viejo y loco que no puede ser avisado.

14 F or out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.

Porque de la cárcel salió para reinar; aunque en su reino nació pobre.

15 I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.

Vi a todos los vivientes debajo del sol caminando con el niño, sucesor, que estará en lugar de aquel.

16 T here is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

No tiene fin todo el pueblo que fue antes de ellos; tampoco los que vendrán después estarán con él contentos. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.
