1 E l hombre nacido de mujer, Vive por pocos días, y hastiado de sinsabores,

Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

2 S ale como una flor y es cortado, Y huye como la sombra y no permanece.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

3 ¿ Sobre éste abres tus ojos, Y me traes a juicio contigo?

And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

4 ¿ Quién hará limpio a lo inmundo? Nadie.

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

5 C iertamente sus días están contados, Y el número de sus meses te es bien conocido; Le pusiste límites, de los cuales no pasará.

Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

6 ¡ Déjalo! Que descanse Y disfrute de su salario como el jornalero.

Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

7 P orque si el árbol es cortado, aún queda para él esperanza; Retoñará aún, y sus renuevos no faltarán.

For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

8 S i se envejece en la tierra su raíz, Y su tronco se muere en el polvo,

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

9 A l percibir el agua reverdecerá, Y echará ramaje como planta nueva.

Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

10 M as el hombre morirá, y será cortado; Cuando el hombre expire, ¿adónde irá él?

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11 C omo las aguas de un lago se evaporan, Y el río se agota y se seca,

As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

12 A sí el hombre yace y no vuelve a levantarse; Hasta que pasen los cielos, no despertará, Ni se levantará de su sueño.

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

13 ¡ Oh, quién me diera que me escondieses en el Seol, Que me ocultases hasta apaciguarse tu ira, Que me fijases un plazo para acordarte de mí!

O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14 S i el hombre muere, ¿volverá a vivir? Todos los días de mi milicia esperaré, Hasta que venga mi relevo.

If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

15 E ntonces llamarás, y yo te responderé; Tendrás nostalgia de la hechura de tus manos.

Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

16 P ero ahora me cuentas los pasos, Y no cesas de observar mis pecados;

For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

17 T ienes sellada en saco mi prevaricación, Y tienes cosida mi iniquidad.

My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

18 A sí como un monte que cae se deshace, Y las peñas son removidas de su lugar;

And surely the mountains falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

19 C omo las piedras se desgastan con el agua impetuosa, que se lleva el polvo de la tierra; De igual manera haces tú perecer la esperanza del hombre.

The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

20 P ara siempre serás más fuerte que él, hasta hacerlo desaparecer; Desfigurarás su rostro, y le despedirás.

Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

21 S us hijos tendrán honores, pero él no lo sabrá; O serán humillados, y no se enterará.

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

22 S ólo se dolerá él por su propia carne, Y por sí mismo se entristecerá su alma.

But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
