1 Man who is born of woman Is of few days and full of trouble.

Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

2 H e comes forth like a flower and fades away; He flees like a shadow and does not continue.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

3 A nd do You open Your eyes on such a one, And bring me to judgment with Yourself?

And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

4 W ho can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one!

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

5 S ince his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass.

Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

6 L ook away from him that he may rest, Till like a hired man he finishes his day.

Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

7 For there is hope for a tree, If it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And that its tender shoots will not cease.

For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

8 T hough its root may grow old in the earth, And its stump may die in the ground,

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

9 Y et at the scent of water it will bud And bring forth branches like a plant.

Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

10 B ut man dies and is laid away; Indeed he breathes his last And where is he?

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11 A s water disappears from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dries up,

As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

12 S o man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens are no more, They will not awake Nor be roused from their sleep.

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

13 Oh, that You would hide me in the grave, That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past, That You would appoint me a set time, and remember me!

O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14 I f a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, Till my change comes.

If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

15 Y ou shall call, and I will answer You; You shall desire the work of Your hands.

Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

16 F or now You number my steps, But do not watch over my sin.

For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

17 M y transgression is sealed up in a bag, And You cover my iniquity.

My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

18 But as a mountain falls and crumbles away, And as a rock is moved from its place;

And surely the mountains falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

19 A s water wears away stones, And as torrents wash away the soil of the earth; So You destroy the hope of man.

The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

20 Y ou prevail forever against him, and he passes on; You change his countenance and send him away.

Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

21 H is sons come to honor, and he does not know it; They are brought low, and he does not perceive it.

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

22 B ut his flesh will be in pain over it, And his soul will mourn over it.”

But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
