1 T here was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar.

În ţară a venit o foamete, afară de foametea dintîi, care fusese pe vremea lui Avraam. Isaac s'a dus la Abimelec, împăratul Filistenilor, la Gherar.

2 T hen the Lord appeared to him and said: “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you.

Domnul i S'a arătat, şi i -a zis:,, Nu te pogorî în Egipt! Rămîi în ţara în care îţi voi spune.

3 D well in this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

Locuieşte ca străin în ţara aceasta; Eu voi fi cu tine, şi te voi binecuvînta; căci toate ţinuturile acestea ţi le voi da ţie şi seminţei tale, şi voi ţinea jurămîntul pe care l-am făcut tatălui tău Avraam.``

4 A nd I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;

Îţi voi înmulţi sămînţa, ca stelele cerului; voi da seminţei tale toate ţinuturile acestea; şi toate neamurile pămîntului vor fi binecuvîntate în sămînţa ta, ca răsplată

5 b ecause Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”

pentrucă Avraam a ascultat de porunca Mea, şi a păzit ce i-am cerut, a păzit poruncile Mele, orînduirile Mele, şi legile Mele.``

6 S o Isaac dwelt in Gerar.

Astfel Isaac a rămas la Gherar.

7 A nd the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, “She is my sister”; for he was afraid to say, “ She is my wife,” because he thought, “lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to behold.”

Cînd îi puneau oamenii locului aceluia întrebări cu privire la nevasta lui, el zicea:,, Este sora mea.`` Căci îi era frică să spună că este nevastă-sa, ca să nu -l omoare oamenii locului aceluia, fiindcă Rebeca era frumoasă la chip.

8 N ow it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah his wife.

Fiindcă şederea lui acolo se lungise, s'a întîmplat că Abimelec, împăratul Filistenilor, uitîndu-se pe fereastră, a văzut pe Isaac jucîndu-se cu nevastă-sa Rebeca.

9 T hen Abimelech called Isaac and said, “Quite obviously she is your wife; so how could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac said to him, “Because I said, ‘Lest I die on account of her.’”

Abimelec a trimes să cheme pe Isaac, şi i -a zis:,, Nu mai încape îndoială că e nevastă-ta. Cum ai putut zice:,, E soru-mea?`` Isaac i -a răspuns:,, Am zis aşa, ca să nu mor din pricina ei.``

10 A nd Abimelech said, “What is this you have done to us? One of the people might soon have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us.”

Şi Abimelec a zis:,, Ce ne-ai făcut? Ce uşor s'ar fi putut ca vreunul din norod să se culce cu nevastă-ta, şi ne-ai fi făcut vinovaţi.``

11 S o Abimelech charged all his people, saying, “He who touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.”

Atunci Abimelec a dat următoarea poruncă întregului norod:,, Cine se va atinge de omul acesta sau de nevasta lui, va fi omorît.``

12 T hen Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him.

Isaac a făcut sămănături în ţara aceea, şi a strîns rod însutit în anul acela; căci Domnul l -a binecuvîntat.

13 T he man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous;

Astfel omul acesta s'a îmbogăţit, şi a mers îmbogăţindu-se din ce în ce mai mult, pînă ce a ajuns foarte bogat.

14 f or he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines envied him.

Avea cirezi de vite şi turme de oi, şi un mare număr de robi: de aceea Filistenii îl pismuiau.

15 N ow the Philistines had stopped up all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, and they had filled them with earth.

Toate fîntînile, pe cari le săpaseră robii tatălui său, pe vremea tatălui său Avraam, Filistenii le-au astupat şi le-au umplut cu ţărînă.

16 A nd Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.”

Şi Abimelec a zis lui Isaac:,, Pleacă dela noi, căci ai ajuns mult mai puternic decît noi.``

17 T hen Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

Isaac a plecat de acolo şi a tăbărît în valea Gherar, unde s'a aşezat cu locuinţa.

18 A nd Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.

Isaac a săpat din nou fîntînile de apă, pe cari le săpaseră robii tatălui său Avraam, şi pe cari le astupaseră Filistenii, după moartea lui Avraam; şi le -a pus iarăş aceleaşi nume, pe cari le pusese tatăl său.

19 A lso Isaac’s servants dug in the valley, and found a well of running water there.

Robii lui Isaac au mai săpat în vale, şi au dat acolo peste o fîntînă cu apă de izvor.

20 B ut the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him.

Păstorii din Gherar s'au certat însă cu păstorii lui Isaac, zicînd:,, Apa este a noastră.`` Şi a pus fîntînii numele Esec, pentrucă se certaseră cu el.

21 T hen they dug another well, and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah.

Apoi au săpat o altă fîntînă, pentru care iar au făcut gîlceavă, de aceea a numit -o Sitna.

22 A nd he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”

Pe urmă s'a mutat de acolo, şi a săpat o altă fîntînă, pentru care nu s'au mai certat; şi a numit -o Rehobot;,, căci``, a zis el,,, Domnul ne -a făcut loc larg, ca să ne putem întinde în ţară.``

23 T hen he went up from there to Beersheba.

De acolo s'a suit la Beer-Şeba.

24 A nd the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham; do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham’s sake.”

Domnul i S'a arătat chiar în noaptea aceea, şi i -a zis:,, Eu sînt Dumnezeul tatălui tău Avraam; nu te teme, căci Eu sînt cu tine; te voi binecuvînta, şi îţi voi înmulţi sămînţa, din pricina robului Meu Avraam.``

25 S o he built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord, and he pitched his tent there; and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.

Isaac a zidit acolo un altar, a chemat Numele Domnului, şi şi -a întins cortul acolo. Robii lui Isaac au săpat acolo o fîntînă.

26 T hen Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol the commander of his army.

Abimelec a venit din Gherar la el, cu prietenul său Ahuzat, şi cu Picol, căpetenia oştirii lui.

27 A nd Isaac said to them, “Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?”

Isaac le -a zis:,, Pentru ce veniţi la mine, voi cari mă urîţi şi m'aţi izgonit dela voi?``

28 B ut they said, “We have certainly seen that the Lord is with you. So we said, ‘Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you,

Ei au răspuns:,, Vedem lămurit că Domnul este cu tine. De aceea zicem:,, Să fie un jurămînt între noi, între noi şi tine, şi să facem un legămînt cu tine!

29 t hat you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace. You are now the blessed of the Lord.’”

Anume, jură că nu ne vei face nici un rău, după cum nici noi nu ne-am atins de tine, ci ţi-am făcut numai bine, şi te-am lăsat să pleci în pace. Tu acum eşti binecuvîntat de Domnul.``

30 S o he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

Isaac le -a dat un ospăţ, şi au mîncat şi au băut.

31 T hen they arose early in the morning and swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

S'au sculat dis de dimineaţă, şi s'au legat unul cu altul printr'un jurămînt. Isaac i -a lăsat apoi să plece, şi ei l-au părăsit în pace.

32 I t came to pass the same day that Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, “We have found water.”

In aceeaş zi, nişte robi ai lui Isaac au venit să -i vorbească de fîntîna pe care o săpau, şi i-au zis:,, Am dat de apă!``

33 S o he called it Shebah. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

Şi el a numit -o Şiba. De aceea s'a pus cetăţii numele Beer-Şeba pînă în ziua de azi.

34 W hen Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

La vîrsta de patruzeci de ani, Esau a luat de neveste pe Iudita, fata Hetitului Beeri, şi pe Basmat, fata Hetitului Elon.

35 A nd they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.

Ele au fost o pricină de mare amărăciune pentru Isaac şi Rebeca.
