1 N ow the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

Cuvîntul Domnului a vorbit lui Iona, fiul lui Amitai, astfel:

2 “ Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”

Scoală-te, du-te la Ninive, cetatea cea mare, şi strigă împotriva ei. Căci răutatea ei s'a suit pînă la Mine!``

3 B ut Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. The Storm at Sea

Şi Iona s'a sculat să fugă la Tars, departe de Faţa Domnului. S'a pogorît la Iafo, şi a găsit acolo o corabie care mergea la Tars. A plătit preţul călătoriei, şi s'a suit în corabie ca să meargă împreună cu călătorii la Tars, departe... de Faţa Domnului.

4 B ut the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.

Dar Domnul a făcut să sufle pe mare un vînt năpraznic, şi a stîrnit o mare furtună. Corabia ameninţa să se sfărîme.

5 T hen the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.

Corăbierii s'au temut, au strigat fiecare la dumnezeul lui, şi au aruncat în mare uneltele din corabie, ca s'o facă mai uşoară. Iona s'a pogorît în fundul corăbiei, s'a culcat şi a adormit dus.

6 S o the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”

Cîrmaciul s'a apropiat de el, şi i -a zis:,, Ce dormi? Scoală-te şi cheamă pe Dumnezeul tău! Poate că Dumnezeu va voi să se gîndeasc la noi, şi nu vom pieri!``

7 A nd they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

Şi au zis unul către altul:,, Veniţi să tragem la sorţ, ca să ştim pricina din cui a venit peste noi nenorocirea aceasta!`` Au tras la sorţ, şi sorţul a căzut pe Iona.

8 T hen they said to him, “Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?”

Atunci ei i-au zis:,, Spune-ne din pricina cui a venit peste noi nenorocirea aceasta? Ce meserie ai, şi de unde vii? Care îţi este ţara, şi din ce popor eşti?``

9 S o he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. ” Jonah Thrown into the Sea

El le -a răspuns:,, Sînt Evreu, şi mă tem de Domnul, Dumnezeul cerurilor, care a făcut marea şi uscatul!``

10 T hen the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

Oamenii aceia au avut o mare teamă, şi i-au zis:,, Pentruce ai făcut lucrul acesta?`` Căci oamenii aceia ştiau că fugea de Faţa Domnului, pentrucă le spusese el.

11 T hen they said to him, “What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?”—for the sea was growing more tempestuous.

Ei i-au zis:,, Ce să-ţi facem, ca să se potolească marea faţă de noi?`` Căci marea era din ce în ce mai înfuriată.

12 A nd he said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”

El le -a răspuns:,, Luaţi-mă, şi aruncaţi-mă în mare, şi marea se va linişti faţă de voi! Căci ştiu că din vina mea vine peste voi această mare furtună!``

13 N evertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them.

Oamenii aceştia vîsleau ca să ajungă la uscat, dar nu puteau, pentrucă marea se întărîta tot mai mult împotriva lor.

14 T herefore they cried out to the Lord and said, “We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, have done as it pleased You.”

Atunci au strigat către Domnul, şi au zis:,, Doamne, nu ne pierde din pricina vieţii omului acestuia, şi nu ne împovăra cu sînge nevinovat! Căci, Tu, Doamne, faci ce vrei!

15 S o they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.

Apoi au luat pe Iona, şi l-au aruncat în mare. Şi furia mării s'a potolit.

16 T hen the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord and took vows. Jonah’s Prayer and Deliverance

Pe oamenii aceia i -a apucat o mare frică de Domnul, şi au adus Domnului o jertfă, şi I-au făcut juruinţe.

17 N ow the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Domnul a trimes un peşte mare să înghită pe Iona, şi Iona a stat în pîntecele peştelui trei zile şi trei nopţi.
