1 D ies sind die Sprüche Salomos, des Königs in Israel, des Sohnes Davids,

The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:

2 z u lernen Weisheit und Zucht, Verstand

to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding;

3 K lugheit, Gerechtigkeit, Recht und Schlecht;

to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity;

4 d aß die Unverständigen klug und die Jünglinge vernünftig und vorsichtig werden.

to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young man:

5 W er weise ist der hört zu und bessert sich; wer verständig ist, der läßt sich raten,

that the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel:

6 d aß er verstehe die Sprüche und ihre Deutung, die Lehre der Weisen und ihre Beispiele.

to understand a proverb, and parables, the words and riddles of the wise.

7 D es HERRN Furcht ist Anfang der Erkenntnis. Die Ruchlosen verachten Weisheit und Zucht.

The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

8 M ein Kind, gehorche der Zucht deines Vaters und verlaß nicht das Gebot deiner Mutter.

My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching:

9 D enn solches ist ein schöner Schmuck deinem Haupt und eine Kette an deinem Hals.

for they will be a garland to grace your head, and chains around your neck.

10 M ein Kind, wenn dich die bösen Buben locken, so folge nicht.

My son, if sinners entice you, don’t consent.

11 W enn sie sagen: "Gehe mit uns! wir wollen auf Blut lauern und den Unschuldigen ohne Ursache nachstellen;

If they say, “Come with us, Let’s lay in wait for blood; let’s lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;

12 w ir wollen sie lebendig verschlingen wie die Hölle und die Frommen wie die, so hinunter in die Grube fahren;

let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit.

13 w ir wollen großes Gut finden; wir wollen unsre Häuser mit Raub füllen;

We’ll find all valuable wealth. We’ll fill our houses with plunder.

14 w age es mit uns! es soll unser aller ein Beutel sein":

You shall cast your lot among us. We’ll all have one purse.”

15 m ein Kind, wandle den Weg nicht mit ihnen; wehre deinem Fuß vor ihrem Pfad.

My son, don’t walk on the path with them. Keep your foot from their path,

16 D enn ihr Füße laufen zum Bösen und eilen, Blut zu vergießen.

for their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood.

17 D enn es ist vergeblich, das Netz auswerfen vor den Augen der Vögel.

For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird:

18 S ie aber lauern auf ihr eigen Blut und stellen sich selbst nach dem Leben.

but these lay wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives.

19 A lso geht es allen, die nach Gewinn geizen, daß ihr Geiz ihnen das Leben nimmt.

So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain. It takes away the life of its owners.

20 D ie Weisheit klagt draußen und läßt sich hören auf den Gassen;

Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares.

21 s ie ruft in dem Eingang des Tores, vorn unter dem Volk; sie redet ihre Worte in der Stadt:

She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words:

22 W ie lange wollt ihr Unverständigen unverständig sein und die Spötter Lust zu Spötterei und die Ruchlosen die Lehre hassen?

“How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

23 K ehret euch zu meiner Strafe. Siehe, ich will euch heraussagen meinen Geist und euch meine Worte kundtun.

Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.

24 W eil ich denn rufe, und ihr weigert euch, ich recke meine Hand aus, und niemand achtet darauf,

Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention;

25 u nd laßt fahren allen meinen Rat und wollt meine Strafe nicht:

but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof;

26 s o will ich auch lachen in eurem Unglück und eurer spotten, wenn da kommt, was ihr fürchtet,

I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you;

27 w enn über euch kommt wie ein Sturm, was ihr fürchtet, und euer Unglück als ein Wetter, wenn über euch Angst und Not kommt.

when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come on you.

28 D ann werden sie nach mir rufen, aber ich werde nicht antworten; sie werden mich suchen, und nicht finden.

Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me;

29 D arum, daß sie haßten die Lehre und wollten des HERRN Furcht nicht haben,

because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.

30 w ollten meinen Rat nicht und lästerten alle meine Strafe:

They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.

31 s o sollen sie essen von den Früchten ihres Wesens und ihres Rats satt werden.

Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.

32 W as die Unverständigen gelüstet, tötet sie, und der Ruchlosen Glück bringt sie um.

For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them.

33 W er aber mir gehorcht, wird sicher bleiben und genug haben und kein Unglück fürchten.

But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, and will be at ease, without fear of harm.”
