1 N ow Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a prostitute. Gilead became the father of Jephthah.

Jefté, el galaadita, era esforzado y valeroso. Era hijo de una ramera y de un hombre llamado Galaad.

2 G ilead’s wife bore him sons. When his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, “You will not inherit in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.”

Pero también la mujer de Galaad le dio hijos, los cuales, cuando crecieron, echaron fuera a Jefté, diciéndole: «No heredarás en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer.»

3 T hen Jephthah fled from his brothers, and lived in the land of Tob. Outlaws joined up with Jephthah, and they went out with him.

Huyó, pues, Jefté de sus hermanos, y se fue a vivir en tierra de Tob, donde reunió una banda de hombres ociosos que salían con él.

4 A fter a while, the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

Aconteció andando el tiempo, que los hijos de Amón hicieron guerra contra Israel.

5 W hen the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob.

Cuando ello sucedió, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a traer a Jefté de la tierra de Tob,

6 T hey said to Jephthah, “Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.”

y le dijeron: —Ven, para que seas nuestro jefe en la guerra contra los hijos de Amón.

7 J ephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”

Jefté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: —¿No me aborrecisteis vosotros y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, venís ahora a mí cuando estáis en aflicción?

8 T he elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon. You will be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

Los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: —Por esta misma causa volvemos ahora a ti, para que vengas con nosotros a pelear contra los hijos de Amón y a ser el caudillo de todos los que vivimos en Galaad.

9 J ephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh delivers them before me, will I be your head?”

Jefté dijo entonces a los ancianos de Galaad: —Si me hacéis volver para que pelee contra los hijos de Amón, y Jehová los entrega delante de mí, ¿seré yo vuestro caudillo?

10 T he elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Yahweh will be witness between us. Surely we will do what you say.”

Los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: —Jehová sea testigo entre nosotros si no hacemos como tú dices.

11 T hen Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them. Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.

Fue, pues, Jefté con los ancianos de Galaad y el pueblo lo eligió como su caudillo y jefe. En Mizpa, Jefté repitió todas sus palabras delante de Jehová,

12 J ephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?”

y envió mensajeros al rey de los amonitas, diciendo: —¿Qué tienes tú conmigo, para venir a hacer guerra contra mi tierra?

13 T he king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.”

El rey de los amonitas respondió a los mensajeros de Jefté: —Por cuanto Israel, cuando subió de Egipto, tomó mi tierra, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc y el Jordán, devuélvela tú ahora en paz.

14 J ephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon;

Jefté envió otros mensajeros al rey de los amonitas,

15 a nd he said to him, “Thus says Jephthah: Israel didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,

con el siguiente mensaje: —Jefté ha dicho esto: “Israel no tomó tierra de Moab ni tierra de los hijos de Amón.

16 b ut when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;

Porque cuando Israel subió de Egipto y anduvo por el desierto hasta el Mar Rojo, llegó a Cades.

17 t hen Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let me pass through your land;’ but the king of Edom didn’t listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel stayed in Kadesh.

Entonces Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom, diciendo: ‘Yo te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra’, pero el rey de Edom no los escuchó. También envió mensajeros al rey de Moab, el cual tampoco quiso. Israel, por tanto, se quedó en Cades.

18 T hen they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn’t come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

Después, yendo por el desierto, rodeó la tierra de Edom y la tierra de Moab y, viniendo por el lado oriental de la tierra de Moab, acampó al otro lado de Arnón, pero no entró en territorio de Moab, porque Arnón es territorio de Moab.

19 I srael sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land to my place.’

Asimismo envió Israel mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, diciéndole: ‘Te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar’.

20 B ut Sihon didn’t trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

Pero Sehón no se fió de Israel para darle paso por su territorio, sino que reuniendo toda su gente acampó en Jahaza y peleó contra Israel.

21 Y ahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them. So Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

Pero Jehová, Dios de Israel, entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en manos de Israel, y los derrotó. De esta manera se apoderó Israel de toda la tierra de los amorreos que habitaban en aquel país.

22 T hey possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.

También se apoderó de todo el territorio del amorreo desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

23 S o now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?

Así que, ¿pretendes tú apoderarte de lo que Jehová, Dios de Israel, le quitó al amorreo en favor de su pueblo Israel?

24 W on’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.

Lo que te haga poseer Quemos, tu dios, ¿no lo poseerías tú? Así, todo lo que Jehová, nuestro Dios, nos ha dado, nosotros lo poseeremos.

25 N ow are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?

¿Eres tú ahora mejor en algo que Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Tuvo él alguna reclamación contra Israel o hizo guerra contra nosotros?

26 W hile Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why didn’t you recover them within that time?

Ya hace trescientos años que Israel habita en Hesbón y sus aldeas, en Aroer y sus aldeas, y en todas las ciudades que están en el territorio del Arnón, ¿por qué no las habéis recobrado en todo ese tiempo?

27 I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. May Yahweh the Judge be judge today between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.”

Así que, yo en nada he pecado contra ti, pero tú haces mal peleando contra mí. Jehová, que es el juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón.”

28 H owever the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

Pero el rey de los hijos de Amón no atendió a estas razones que Jefté le había enviado.

29 T hen Yahweh’s Spirit came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.

Entonces el espíritu de Jehová vino sobre Jefté, y éste recorrió Galaad y Manasés. De allí pasó a Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad pasó a los hijos de Amón.

30 J ephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,

Entonces Jefté hizo voto a Jehová, diciendo: «Si entregas a los amonitas en mis manos,

31 t hen it shall be, that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

cualquiera que salga de las puertas de mi casa a recibirme cuando yo regrese victorioso de los amonitas, será de Jehová y lo ofreceré en holocausto.»

32 S o Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.

Jefté fue a pelear contra los hijos de Amón, y Jehová los entregó en sus manos.

33 H e struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

Desde Aroer y hasta llegar a Minit conquistó veinte ciudades, y hasta la Vega de las viñas los derrotó con gran estrago. Así fueron sometidos los amonitas por los hijos de Israel.

34 J ephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter.

Cuando volvió Jefté a Mizpa, a su casa, su hija salió a recibirlo con panderos y danzas. Ella era sola, su hija única; fuera de ella no tenía hijo ni hija.

35 W hen he saw her, he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can’t go back.”

Cuando él la vio, rasgó sus vestidos, diciendo: —¡Ay, hija mía!, en verdad que me has afligido, y tú misma has venido a ser causa de mi dolor, porque le he dado mi palabra a Jehová y no podré retractarme.

36 S he said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.”

Ella entonces le respondió: —Padre mío, si le has dado tu palabra a Jehová, haz conmigo conforme a lo que prometiste, ya que Jehová te ha permitido vengarte de tus enemigos, los hijos de Amón.

37 S he said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me. Leave me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”

Y añadió: —Concédeme esto: déjame que por dos meses vaya y descienda por los montes a llorar mi virginidad junto con mis compañeras.

38 H e said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.

Jefté le respondió: —Ve. La dejó por dos meses. Fue con sus compañeras y lloró su virginidad por los montes.

39 A t the end of two months, she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed. She was a virgin. It was a custom in Israel

Pasados los dos meses volvió a su padre, quien cumplió el voto que había hecho. La hija de Jefté nunca conoció varón.

40 t hat the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

Por eso es costumbre en Israel que todos los años vayan las doncellas de Israel a llorar a la hija de Jefté, el galaadita, durante cuatro días.
