1 S atan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.

Se levantó Satanás contra Israel e incitó a David a que hiciera censo del pueblo.

2 D avid said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”

Y dijo David a Joab y a los príncipes del pueblo: —Id, haced censo de Israel desde Beerseba hasta Dan, e informadme sobre el número de ellos para que yo lo sepa.

3 J oab said, “May Yahweh make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”

Respondió Joab: —¡Que Jehová añada a su pueblo cien veces más de lo que es, rey, señor mío! ¿Acaso no son todos ellos siervos de mi señor? ¿Para qué procura mi señor esto, que traerá pecado sobre Israel?

4 N evertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.

Pero la orden del rey pudo más que Joab. Salió, por tanto, Joab y recorrió todo Israel; entonces volvió a Jerusalén y dio cuenta a David de las cifras del pueblo:

5 J oab gave up the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.

había en todo Israel un millón cien mil que sacaban espada, y en Judá cuatrocientos setenta mil hombres que sacaban espada.

6 B ut he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them; for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.

Entre estos no fueron contados los levitas, ni los hijos de Benjamín, porque la orden del rey era abominable a Joab.

7 G od was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.

Esto desagradó a Dios, el cual castigó a Israel.

8 D avid said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.”

Entonces dijo David a Dios: —He pecado gravemente al hacer esto; te ruego que quites la maldad de tu siervo, pues he actuado muy locamente.

9 Y ahweh spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,

Y habló Jehová a Gad, vidente de David, diciendo:

10 “ Go and speak to David, saying, ‘Yahweh says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”

«Ve, habla a David y dile: “Así ha dicho Jehová: Tres cosas te propongo; escoge de ellas una y así haré contigo.”»

11 S o Gad came to David, and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Take your choice:

Gad fue ante David y le dijo: —Así ha dicho Jehová:

12 e ither three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days the sword of Yahweh, even pestilence in the land, and Yahweh’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”

“Escoge para ti: tres años de hambre, o tres meses de derrotas ante tus enemigos, con la espada de tus adversarios, o bien tres días durante los cuales la espada de Jehová y la peste recorran la tierra, y el ángel de Jehová haga destrucción en todos los términos de Israel.” Mira, pues, qué responderé a quien me ha enviado.

13 D avid said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into Yahweh’s hand; for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”

David respondió a Gad: —Estoy en grande angustia. Prefiero caer en la mano de Jehová, porque sus misericordias son muchas en extremo, que caer en manos de los hombres.

14 S o Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.

Entonces Jehová envió una peste sobre Israel, y murieron setenta mil hombres.

15 G od sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, Yahweh saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Envió Jehová el ángel a Jerusalén para destruirla; pero cuando ya estaba destruyéndola, miró Jehová y se arrepintió de aquel mal, y dijo al ángel que destruía: «¡Basta ya! ¡Detén tu mano!» El ángel de Jehová estaba junto a la era de Ornán, el jebuseo.

16 D avid lifted up his eyes, and saw Yahweh’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.

Y alzando David sus ojos, vio al ángel de Jehová que estaba entre el cielo y la tierra, con una espada desnuda en su mano, extendida contra Jerusalén. Entonces David y los ancianos se postraron sobre sus rostros, vestidos de ropas ásperas.

17 D avid said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Yahweh my God, be against me, and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”

Y dijo David a Dios: —¿No soy yo el que hizo contar al pueblo? Yo mismo soy el que pequé, y ciertamente he hecho mal; pero estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? Jehová Dios mío, caiga ahora tu mano sobre mí, y sobre la casa de mi padre, pero no envíes la peste sobre tu pueblo.

18 T hen Yahweh’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

El ángel de Jehová ordenó a Gad decirle a David que subiera y construyera un altar a Jehová en la era de Ornán, el jebuseo.

19 D avid went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in Yahweh’s name.

Y David subió, conforme a la orden que Gad le había dado en nombre de Jehová.

20 O rnan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

Al volverse Ornán, que estaba trillando el trigo, vio al ángel, y los cuatro hijos que estaban con él se escondieron.

21 A s David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

Cuando David llegó adonde estaba Ornán, éste miró y vio a David; entonces salió de la era y se postró en tierra ante David.

22 T hen David said to Ornan, “Give me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to Yahweh on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”

Luego dijo David a Ornán: —Dame este lugar de la era, para que edifique un altar a Jehová; dámelo por su cabal precio, para que cese la mortandad en el pueblo.

23 O rnan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”

Respondió Ornán a David: —Tómala para ti, y haga mi señor, el rey, lo que bien le parezca. Yo daré los bueyes para el holocausto, trillos para leña y trigo para la ofrenda. Yo lo doy todo.

24 K ing David said to Ornan, “No; but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for Yahweh, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”

Replicó el rey David a Ornán: —No, todo quiero comprarlo por su justo precio; porque no tomaré para Jehová lo que es tuyo, ni sacrificaré holocausto que nada me cueste.

25 S o David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.

Y dio David a Ornán por aquel lugar la suma de seiscientos siclos de oro.

26 D avid built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Yahweh; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.

David edificó allí un altar a Jehová, en el que ofreció holocaustos y ofrendas de paz e invocó a Jehová, quien le respondió por fuego desde los cielos en el altar del holocausto.

27 T hen Yahweh commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.

Entonces Jehová habló al ángel, y éste volvió su espada a la vaina.

28 A t that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

Al ver David que Jehová lo había oído en la era de Ornán, el jebuseo, ofreció sacrificios allí.

29 F or Yahweh’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.

Pues el tabernáculo de Jehová que Moisés había hecho en el desierto, y el altar del holocausto, estaban entonces en el lugar alto de Gabaón;

30 B ut David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God; for he was afraid because of the sword of Yahweh’s angel.

pero David no pudo ir allá a consultar a Dios, porque estaba atemorizado a causa de la espada del ángel de Jehová.
