1 A nd Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

Murió Samuel, y se reunió todo Israel; lo lloraron, y lo sepultaron en su casa en Ramá. Después David se levantó y descendió al desierto de Parán. David y Abigail

2 A nd there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

Había un hombre en Maón que tenía sus bienes en Carmel; el hombre era muy rico y tenía 3, 000 ovejas y 1, 000 cabras; y estaba en Carmel trasquilando sus ovejas.

3 N ow the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

El hombre se llamaba Nabal, y su mujer se llamaba Abigail. Y la mujer era inteligente y de hermosa apariencia, pero el hombre era áspero y malo en sus tratos, y era Calebita.

4 A nd David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep.

Y David oyó en el desierto que Nabal estaba trasquilando sus ovejas.

5 A nd David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name:

Entonces David envió diez jóvenes, y les dijo: “Suban a Carmel, visiten a Nabal y salúdenlo en mi nombre;

6 a nd thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.

y le dirán así: ‘Ten una larga vida, paz para ti, paz para tu casa y paz para todo lo que tienes.

7 A nd now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now thy shepherds which were with us, we hurt them not, neither was there ought missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.

He oído que tienes esquiladores. Ahora bien, tus pastores han estado con nosotros, y no los hemos maltratado, ni les ha faltado nada todos los días que estuvieron en Carmel.

8 A sk thy young men, and they will shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.

Pregunta a tus criados, y ellos te lo dirán. Por tanto, permite que mis criados hallen gracia ante tus ojos, porque hemos llegado en un día de fiesta. Te ruego que de lo que tengas a mano, des a tus siervos y a tu hijo David.’”

9 A nd when David’s young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.

Cuando llegaron los jóvenes de David, dijeron a Nabal todas estas palabras en nombre de David; entonces esperaron.

10 A nd Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.

Pero Nabal respondió a los siervos de David: “¿Quién es David y quién es el hijo de Isaí? Hay muchos siervos hoy día que huyen de su señor.

11 S hall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?

¿He de tomar mi pan, mi agua y la carne que he preparado para mis esquiladores, y he de dárselos a hombres cuyo origen no conozco ?”

12 S o David’s young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings.

Entonces los jóvenes de David se volvieron por su camino, y regresaron; y llegaron y le comunicaron todas estas palabras.

13 A nd David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.

Y David dijo a sus hombres: “Cíñase cada uno su espada.” Y cada hombre se la ciñó. David también se ciñó la suya, y unos 400 hombres subieron tras David, mientras que otros 200 se quedaron cuidando el equipaje.

14 B ut one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed on them.

Pero uno de los criados avisó a Abigail, mujer de Nabal: “David envió mensajeros desde el desierto a saludar a nuestro señor, pero él los ha tratado mal.

15 B ut the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields:

Sin embargo, los hombres fueron muy buenos con nosotros; no nos maltrataron ni nos faltó nada cuando andábamos con ellos, mientras estábamos en el campo.

16 t hey were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.

Como muro fueron para nosotros tanto de noche como de día, todo el tiempo que estuvimos con ellos apacentando las ovejas.

17 N ow therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.

Ahora pues, reflexione y mire lo que ha de hacer, porque el mal ya está determinado contra nuestro señor y contra toda su casa, y él es un hombre tan indigno que nadie puede hablarle.”

18 T hen Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.

Entonces Abigail se dio prisa y tomó 200 panes, dos odres de vino, cinco ovejas ya preparadas, cinco medidas de grano tostado, 100 racimos de uvas pasas, y 200 tortas de higos, y los puso sobre asnos.

19 A nd she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.

Y dijo a sus criados: “Vayan delante de mí; porque yo los seguiré.” Pero no dijo nada a su marido Nabal.

20 A nd it was so, as she rode on the ass, that she came down by the covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down against her; and she met them.

Cuando ella cabalgaba en su asno y descendía por la parte encubierta del monte, David y sus hombres venían bajando hacia ella, y se encontró con ellos.

21 N ow David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.

Y David había dicho: “Ciertamente, en vano he guardado todo lo que este hombre tiene en el desierto, de modo que nada se perdió de todo lo suyo; y él me ha devuelto mal por bien.

22 S o and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.

Así haga Dios a los enemigos de David, y aun más, si al llegar la mañana he dejado tan sólo un varón de los suyos.”

23 A nd when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,

Cuando Abigail vio a David se dio prisa y bajó de su asno, y cayendo sobre su rostro delante de David, se postró en tierra.

24 a nd fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.

Y se echó a sus pies y le dijo: “Señor mío, sólo sobre mí sea la culpa. Le ruego que permita que su sierva le hable, y que escuche las palabras de su sierva.

25 L et not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.

Ruego a mi señor que no haga caso a este hombre indigno, Nabal, porque conforme a su nombre, así es. Se llama Nabal (Insensato), y la insensatez está con él; pero yo su sierva no vi a los jóvenes que usted, mi señor, envió.

26 N ow therefore, my lord, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the Lord hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.

Ahora pues, señor mío, vive el Señor y vive su alma. Puesto que el Señor le ha impedido derramar sangre y vengarse por su propia mano, sean pues como Nabal sus enemigos y los que buscan el mal contra mi señor.

27 A nd now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.

Y ahora permita que este presente que su sierva ha traído para mi señor se dé a los jóvenes que acompañan a mi señor.

28 I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine handmaid: for the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the Lord, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.

Le ruego que perdone la ofensa de su sierva, porque el Señor ciertamente establecerá una casa duradera para mi señor, pues mi señor pelea las batallas del Señor, y el mal no se hallará en usted en todos sus días.

29 Y et a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the Lord thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as out of the middle of a sling.

Y si alguien se levanta para perseguirlo y buscar su vida, entonces la vida de mi señor estará bien atada en el haz de los que viven con el Señor su Dios; pero El lanzará la vida de sus enemigos como de en medio de una honda.

30 A nd it shall come to pass, when the Lord shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;

Y sucederá que cuando el Señor haga por mi señor conforme a todo el bien que El ha hablado de usted, y se ponga por príncipe sobre Israel,

31 t hat this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the Lord shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.

esto no causará pesar ni remordimiento a mi señor, tanto por haber derramado sangre sin causa como por haberse vengado mi señor. Cuando el Señor haya hecho bien a mi señor, entonces acuérdese de su sierva.”

32 A nd David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me:

Entonces David dijo a Abigail: “Bendito sea el Señor, Dios de Israel, que te envió hoy a encontrarme,

33 a nd blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.

bendito sea tu razonamiento, y bendita seas tú, que me has impedido derramar sangre hoy y vengarme por mi propia mano.

34 F or in very deed, as the Lord God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.

Sin embargo, vive el Señor, Dios de Israel, que me ha impedido hacerte mal, que si tú no hubieras venido pronto a encontrarme, ciertamente, para la luz del alba, no le hubiera quedado a Nabal ni un varón.”

35 S o David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.

Recibió David de su mano lo que ella había traído y le dijo: “Sube en paz a tu casa. Mira, te he escuchado y te he concedido tu petición.” Muerte de Nabal

36 A nd Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.

Entonces Abigail regresó a Nabal, y éste tenía un banquete en su casa, como el banquete de un rey. Y el corazón de Nabal estaba alegre, pues estaba muy ebrio, por lo cual ella no le comunicó nada hasta el amanecer.

37 B ut it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

Pero sucedió que por la mañana, cuando se le pasó el vino a Nabal, su mujer le contó estas cosas, y su corazón se quedó como muerto dentro de él, y se puso como una piedra.

38 A nd it came to pass about ten days after, that the Lord smote Nabal, that he died.

Y unos diez días después, sucedió que el Señor hirió a Nabal, y murió.

39 A nd when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the Lord hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.

Cuando David supo que Nabal había muerto, dijo: “Bendito sea el Señor, que ha defendido la causa de mi afrenta de manos de Nabal, y ha preservado a Su siervo del mal. El Señor también ha devuelto la maldad de Nabal sobre su propia cabeza.” Entonces David envió un mensaje a Abigail, para tomarla para sí por mujer.

40 A nd when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife.

Y los siervos de David fueron a casa de Abigail en Carmel, y le hablaron diciendo: “David nos ha enviado a usted, para tomarla para sí por mujer.”

41 A nd she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.

Ella se levantó y postrándose rostro en tierra, dijo: “Miren, su sierva es una criada para lavar los pies de los siervos de mi señor.”

42 A nd Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

Abigail se levantó apresuradamente, montó en un asno, y con sus cinco doncellas que la atendían siguió a los mensajeros de David, y fue su mujer.

43 D avid also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives.

David había tomado también a Ahinoam de Jezreel, y ambas fueron mujeres suyas.

44 B ut Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.

Pues Saúl había dado a su hija Mical, mujer de David, a Palti, hijo de Lais, que era de Galim.
