1 « Ma pure, ascolta, o Giobbe, il mio dire, porgi orecchio a tutte le mie parole!

“But please, Job, hear my speech, And listen to all my words.

2 E cco, apro la bocca, la lingua parla dentro il mio palato.

Now, I open my mouth; My tongue speaks in my mouth.

3 N elle mie parole è la rettitudine del mio cuore; le mie labbra diranno sinceramente quello che so.

My words come from my upright heart; My lips utter pure knowledge.

4 L o Spirito di Dio mi ha creato, e il soffio dell’Onnipotente mi dà la vita.

The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

5 S e puoi, rispondimi; prepara le tue ragioni, fatti avanti!

If you can answer me, Set your words in order before me; Take your stand.

6 E cco, io sono uguale a te davanti a Dio; anch’io fui tratto dall’argilla.

Truly I am as your spokesman before God; I also have been formed out of clay.

7 S pavento di me non potrà quindi coglierti e il peso della mia autorità non ti potrà schiacciare.

Surely no fear of me will terrify you, Nor will my hand be heavy on you.

8 D avanti a me tu dunque hai detto (e ho udito bene il suono delle tue parole):

“Surely you have spoken in my hearing, And I have heard the sound of your words, saying,

9 “ Io sono puro, senza peccato; sono innocente, non c’è iniquità in me;

‘I am pure, without transgression; I am innocent, and there is no iniquity in me.

10 m a Dio trova contro me degli appigli ostili, mi considera suo nemico;

Yet He finds occasions against me, He counts me as His enemy;

11 m i mette i piedi nei ceppi, spia tutti i miei movimenti”.

He puts my feet in the stocks, He watches all my paths.’

12 E cco, io ti rispondo: “In questo non hai ragione”; poiché Dio è più grande dell’uomo.

“Look, in this you are not righteous. I will answer you, For God is greater than man.

13 P erché contendi con lui? Egli non rende conto dei suoi atti.

Why do you contend with Him? For He does not give an accounting of any of His words.

14 « Dio parla una volta, e anche due, ma l’uomo non ci bada;

For God may speak in one way, or in another, Yet man does not perceive it.

15 p arla per via di sogni, di visioni notturne, quando un sonno profondo cade sui mortali, quando sui loro letti essi giacciono assopiti;

In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls upon men, While slumbering on their beds,

16 a llora egli apre i loro orecchi e dà loro in segreto degli ammonimenti,

Then He opens the ears of men, And seals their instruction.

17 p er distogliere l’uomo dal suo modo di agire e tenere lontano da lui la superbia;

In order to turn man from his deed, And conceal pride from man,

18 p er salvargli l’anima dalla fossa, la vita dalla freccia mortale.

He keeps back his soul from the Pit, And his life from perishing by the sword.

19 « L’uomo è anche ammonito sul suo letto, dal dolore, dall’agitazione incessante delle sue ossa;

“ Man is also chastened with pain on his bed, And with strong pain in many of his bones,

20 q uand’egli ha in avversione il pane e lo ripugnano i cibi più squisiti;

So that his life abhors bread, And his soul succulent food.

21 l a carne gli si consuma e sparisce, mentre le ossa, prima invisibili, gli escono fuori;

His flesh wastes away from sight, And his bones stick out which once were not seen.

22 e gli si avvicina alla fossa, e la sua vita a quelli che infliggono la morte.

Yes, his soul draws near the Pit, And his life to the executioners.

23 M a se, presso di lui, c’è un angelo, un interprete, uno solo tra i mille, che mostri all’uomo il suo dovere,

“If there is a messenger for him, A mediator, one among a thousand, To show man His uprightness,

24 D io ha pietà di lui e dice: “Risparmialo, che non scenda nella fossa! Ho trovato il suo riscatto”.

Then He is gracious to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down to the Pit; I have found a ransom’;

25 A llora la sua carne diviene più fresca di quella di un bimbo; egli torna ai giorni della sua giovinezza;

His flesh shall be young like a child’s, He shall return to the days of his youth.

26 i mplora Dio, e Dio gli è propizio; gli dà di contemplare il suo volto con gioia e lo considera di nuovo come giusto.

He shall pray to God, and He will delight in him, He shall see His face with joy, For He restores to man His righteousness.

27 E d egli canterà tra la gente e dirà: “Avevo peccato, pervertito la giustizia, e non sono stato punito come meritavo.

Then he looks at men and says, ‘I have sinned, and perverted what was right, And it did not profit me.’

28 D io ha riscattato l’anima mia dalla fossa, e la mia vita si schiude alla luce!”

He will redeem his soul from going down to the Pit, And his life shall see the light.

29 E cco, tutto questo Dio lo fa due, tre volte, all’uomo,

“Behold, God works all these things, Twice, in fact, three times with a man,

30 p er salvarlo dalla fossa, perché su di lui splenda la luce della vita.

To bring back his soul from the Pit, That he may be enlightened with the light of life.

31 S ta’ attento, Giobbe, dammi ascolto; taci, e io parlerò.

“Give ear, Job, listen to me; Hold your peace, and I will speak.

32 S e hai qualcosa da dire, rispondimi, parla, perché io vorrei poterti dare ragione.

If you have anything to say, answer me; Speak, for I desire to justify you.

33 S e no, tu dammi ascolto, taci, e t’insegnerò la saggezza».

If not, listen to me; Hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom.”
