1 I Filistei combatterono Israele, e gli Israeliti fuggirono davanti ai Filistei e caddero uccisi in gran numero sul monte Ghilboa.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

2 I Filistei inseguirono accanitamente Saul e i suoi figli e uccisero Gionatan, Abinadab e Malchi-Sua, figli di Saul.

Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons.

3 L a battaglia si abbatté pesantemente su Saul; gli arcieri lo raggiunsero, ed egli si trovò in grande angoscia a causa degli arcieri.

The battle became fierce against Saul. The archers hit him, and he was wounded by the archers.

4 S aul disse al suo scudiero: «Sfodera la spada e trafiggimi, affinché questi incirconcisi non vengano a trafiggermi e a farmi oltraggio». Ma lo scudiero non volle farlo, perché ebbe gran paura. Allora Saul prese la propria spada e vi si gettò sopra.

Then Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and abuse me.” But his armorbearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell on it.

5 L o scudiero di Saul, vedendolo morto, si gettò anch’egli sulla propria spada e morì.

And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died.

6 C osì morirono Saul e i suoi tre figli; e tutta la sua casa perì nel medesimo tempo.

So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together.

7 T utti gli Israeliti che abitavano nella valle, quando videro che la gente d’Israele si era data alla fuga e che Saul e i suoi figli erano morti, abbandonarono le loro città e fuggirono; e i Filistei andarono ad abitarle.

And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; then the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

8 L ’indomani i Filistei vennero a spogliare gli uccisi e trovarono Saul e i suoi figli caduti sul monte Ghilboa.

So it happened the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

9 S pogliarono Saul, portarono via la sua testa e le sue armi, e mandarono dappertutto per il paese dei Filistei ad annunciare la buona notizia ai loro idoli e al popolo;

And they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent word throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among the people.

10 m isero le sue armi nella casa del loro dio e inchiodarono il suo teschio nel tempio di Dagon.

Then they put his armor in the temple of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.

11 T utta la gente di Iabes di Galaad udì tutto quello che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul,

And when all Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

12 e tutti gli uomini valorosi si alzarono, presero i cadaveri di Saul e dei suoi figli e li portarono a Iabes; seppellirono le loro ossa sotto la tamerice di Iabes e digiunarono per sette giorni.

all the valiant men arose and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons; and they brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

13 C osì morì Saul, a causa dell’infedeltà che egli aveva commessa contro il Signore per non aver osservato la parola del Signore, e anche perché aveva interrogato e consultato quelli che evocano gli spiriti,

So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance.

14 m entre non aveva consultato il Signore. Perciò il Signore lo fece morire e trasferì il regno a Davide, figlio d’Isai.

But he did not inquire of the Lord; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
