1 B ut when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and in a great rage, and he ridiculed the Jews.

Cuando oyó Sanbalat que nosotros edificábamos el muro, se enojó y se enfureció en gran manera, e hizo escarnio de los judíos.

2 A nd he said before his brethren and the army of Samaria, What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore things ? Will they with sacrifices? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burned?

Y habló delante de sus hermanos y del ejército de Samaria, y dijo: ¿Qué hacen estos débiles judíos? ¿Se les permitirá volver a ofrecer sus sacrificios? ¿Acabarán en un día? ¿Resucitarán de los montones del polvo las piedras que fueron quemadas?

3 N ow Tobiah the Ammonite was near him, and he said, What they build—if a fox climbs upon it, he will break down their stone wall.

Y estaba junto a él Tobías amonita, el cual dijo: Lo que ellos edifican del muro de piedra, si subiere una zorra lo derribará.

4 H ear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn their taunts upon their own heads, and give them for a prey in a land of their captivity.

Oye, oh Dios nuestro, que somos objeto de su menosprecio, y vuelve el baldón de ellos sobre su cabeza, y entrégalos por despojo en la tierra de su cautiverio.

5 C over not their iniquity and let not their sin be blotted out before You, for they have vexed the builders and provoked You.

No cubras su iniquidad, ni su pecado sea borrado delante de ti, porque se airaron contra los que edificaban.

6 S o we built the wall, and all was joined together to half its height, for the people had a heart and mind to work.

Edificamos, pues, el muro, y toda la muralla fue terminada hasta la mitad de su altura, porque el pueblo tuvo ánimo para trabajar.

7 B ut when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabians, Ammonites, and Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were going up and that the breaches were being closed, they were very angry.

Pero aconteció que oyendo Sanbalat y Tobías, y los árabes, los amonitas y los de Asdod, que los muros de Jerusalén eran reparados, porque ya los portillos comenzaban a ser cerrados, se encolerizaron mucho;

8 A nd they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem, to injure and cause confusion and failure in it.

y conspiraron todos a una para venir a atacar a Jerusalén y hacerle daño.

9 B ut because of them we made our prayer to our God and set a watch against them day and night.

Entonces oramos a nuestro Dios, y por causa de ellos pusimos guarda contra ellos de día y de noche.

10 A nd Judah said, The strength of the burden bearers is weakening, and there is much rubbish; we are not able to work on the wall.

Y dijo Judá: Las fuerzas de los acarreadores se han debilitado, y el escombro es mucho, y no podemos edificar el muro.

11 A nd our enemies said, They will not know or see till we come into their midst and kill them and stop the work.

Y nuestros enemigos dijeron: No sepan, ni vean, hasta que entremos en medio de ellos y los matemos, y hagamos cesar la obra.

12 A nd when the Jews who lived near them came, they said to us ten times, You must return; from all places where they dwell they will be upon us.

Pero sucedió que cuando venían los judíos que habitaban entre ellos, nos decían hasta diez veces: De todos los lugares de donde volviereis, ellos caerán sobre vosotros.

13 S o I set behind the wall in places where it was least protected; I even thus used the people as families with their swords, spears, and bows.

Entonces por las partes bajas del lugar, detrás del muro, y en los sitios abiertos, puse al pueblo por familias, con sus espadas, con sus lanzas y con sus arcos.

14 I looked and rose up and said to the nobles and officials and the other people, Do not be afraid of the enemy; remember the Lord and imprint Him, great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.

Después miré, y me levanté y dije a los nobles y a los oficiales, y al resto del pueblo: No temáis delante de ellos; acordaos del Señor, grande y temible, y pelead por vuestros hermanos, por vuestros hijos y por vuestras hijas, por vuestras mujeres y por vuestras casas.

15 A nd when our enemies heard that their plot was known to us and that God had frustrated their purpose, we all returned to the wall, everyone to his work.

Y cuando oyeron nuestros enemigos que lo habíamos entendido, y que Dios había desbaratado el consejo de ellos, nos volvimos todos al muro, cada uno a su tarea.

16 A nd from that time forth, half of my servants worked at the task, and the other half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail; and the leaders stood behind all the house of Judah.

Desde aquel día la mitad de mis siervos trabajaba en la obra, y la otra mitad tenía lanzas, escudos, arcos y corazas; y detrás de ellos estaban los jefes de toda la casa de Judá.

17 T hose who built the wall and those who bore burdens loaded themselves so that everyone worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other hand,

Los que edificaban en el muro, los que acarreaban, y los que cargaban, con una mano trabajaban en la obra, y en la otra tenían la espada.

18 A nd every builder had his sword girded by his side, and so worked. And he who sounded the trumpet was at my side.

Porque los que edificaban, cada uno tenía su espada ceñida a sus lomos, y así edificaban; y el que tocaba la trompeta estaba junto a mí.

19 A nd I said to the nobles and officials and the rest of the people, The work is great and scattered, and we are separated on the wall, one far from another.

Y dije a los nobles, y a los oficiales y al resto del pueblo: La obra es grande y extensa, y nosotros estamos apartados en el muro, lejos unos de otros.

20 I n whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.

En el lugar donde oyereis el sonido de la trompeta, reuníos allí con nosotros; nuestro Dios peleará por nosotros.

21 S o we labored at the work while half of them held the spears from dawn until the stars came out.

Nosotros, pues, trabajábamos en la obra; y la mitad de ellos tenían lanzas desde la subida del alba hasta que salían las estrellas.

22 A t that time also I said to the people, Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that at night they may be a guard to us and a laborer during the day.

También dije entonces al pueblo: Cada uno con su criado permanezca dentro de Jerusalén, y de noche sirvan de centinela y de día en la obra.

23 S o none of us—I, my kinsmen, my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me—took off our clothes; each kept his weapon.

Y ni yo ni mis hermanos, ni mis jóvenes, ni la gente de guardia que me seguía, nos quitamos nuestro vestido; cada uno se desnudaba solamente para bañarse.
