1 P alabra que vino a Jeremías de parte de Jehová, diciendo:

The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

2 L evántate y vete a casa del alfarero, y allí te haré oír mis palabras.

Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

3 Y descendí a casa del alfarero, y he aquí que él trabajaba sobre las dos ruedas.

Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

4 Y siempre que la vasija que él hacía se echaba a perder en su mano, volvía a hacer otra vasija, según le parecía mejor hacerla.

And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 E ntonces vino a mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

6 ¿ No podré yo hacer de vosotros como este alfarero, oh casa de Israel?, dice Jehová. He aquí que como el barro en la mano del alfarero, así sois vosotros en mi mano, oh casa de Israel.

O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

7 D e pronto puedo hablar contra un pueblo y contra un reino, para arrancar, y derribar, y destruir.

At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

8 P ero si ese pueblo contra el cual hablé se vuelve de su maldad, yo me arrepiento del mal que había pensado hacerles,

if that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

9 y en un instante hablo de la gente y del reino, para edificar y para plantar.

And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

10 P ero si hace lo malo delante de mis ojos, no escuchando mi voz, me arrepiento del bien que había determinado hacerle.

if it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

11 A hora, pues, habla luego a todo hombre de Judá y a los moradores de Jerusalén, diciendo: Así dice Jehová: He aquí que yo tramo el mal contra vosotros, y trazo contra vosotros maquinación; conviértase ahora cada uno de su mal camino, y enmiende sus caminos y sus obras.

Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

12 Y dijeron: Es en vano; porque en pos de nuestras propias maquinaciones iremos, y haremos cada uno según la terquedad de nuestro malvado corazón.

And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

13 P or tanto, así dice Jehová: Preguntad ahora entre las naciones, quién ha oído cosa semejante. Gran fealdad ha hecho la virgen de Israel.

Therefore thus saith the Lord; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

14 ¿ Faltará la nieve del Líbano de su roca más alta? ¿Faltarán las aguas frías que corren de lejanas tierras?

Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?

15 P orque mi pueblo me ha olvidado, incensando a lo que es vanidad, y ha sido inducido a tropezar en sus caminos, en las sendas antiguas, para que camine por sendas y no por camino transitado,

Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;

16 p ara hacer de su tierra objeto de asombro y de burla perpetua; todo aquel que pase por ella se asombrará, y meneará la cabeza.

to make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.

17 C omo con viento solano los esparciré delante del enemigo; les mostraré las espaldas y no el rostro, en el día de su perdición. Conspiración del pueblo y oración de Jeremías

I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

18 Y dijeron: Venid y maquinemos contra Jeremías; porque la ley no faltará al sacerdote, ni el consejo al sabio, ni la palabra al profeta. Venid e hirámoslo con la lengua, y no atendamos a ninguna de sus palabras.

Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

19 O h Jehová, mira por mí, y presta atención a la voz de los que contienden conmigo.

Give heed to me, O Lord, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

20 ¿ Es que se paga mal por bien, para que hayan cavado hoyo a mi alma? Acuérdate que me puse delante de ti para hablar el bien por ellos, para apartar de ellos tu ira.

Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.

21 P or tanto, entrega sus hijos a hambre, entrégalos al poder de la espada, y queden sus mujeres sin hijos, y viudas; y sus maridos sean puestos a muerte, y sus jóvenes heridos a espada en la batalla.

Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

22 Ó igase clamor de sus casas, cuando traigas sobre ellos de repente un ejército; porque cavaron un hoyo para prenderme, y a mis pies han escondido lazos.

Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

23 P ero tú, oh Jehová, conoces todo su plan contra mí para matarme; no perdones su maldad, ni borres su pecado de delante de tu rostro; sino deja que tropiecen delante de ti; haz así con ellos en el tiempo de tu enojo.

Yet, Lord, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.
