to Timothy, my true child in faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 E ven as I besought thee to remain at Ephesus when I went into Macedonia, that thou might charge some that they not teach diverse doctrine,

As I urged you when I was going into Macedonia, stay at Ephesus that you might command certain men not to teach a different doctrine,

4 n or give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which generate questions other than that the edification of God is by faith.

and not to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which cause disputes, rather than God’s stewardship, which is in faith—

5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart and of a good conscience and of faith unfeigned:

but the goal of this command is love, out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith;

6 f rom which some, having swerved, have turned aside unto vanity of words,

from which things some, having missed the mark, have turned aside to vain talking;

7 d esiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor from where they affirm.

desiring to be teachers of the law, though they understand neither what they say, nor about what they strongly affirm.

8 B ut we know that the law is good, if a man uses it legitimately,

But we know that the law is good, if a man uses it lawfully,

9 k nowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly sinners, for the evil and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

as knowing this, that law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for man slayers,

10 f or fornicators, for homosexuals, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,

according to the Good News of the glory of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has enabled me, for he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry,

And I thank him who enabled me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he counted me faithful, appointing me to service;

13 w ho was before a blasphemer and a persecutor and injurious, but I was received unto mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

although I was before a blasphemer, a persecutor, and insolent. However, I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

14 A nd the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

The grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

15 T his is a faithful saying and worthy of acceptation by all, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am first.

The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

16 B ut for this cause I was received unto mercy that in me first, Jesus Christ might show forth all clemency, for an example to those who should hereafter believe in him for eternal life.

However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience, for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.

17 T herefore unto the King forever, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, so that according to past prophecies regarding thee, that thou by them might war a good warfare;

This instruction I commit to you, my child Timothy, according to the prophecies which led the way to you, that by them you may wage the good warfare;

19 h olding fast faith and a good conscience, which some, having cast away, have shipwrecked in their faith,

holding faith and a good conscience; which some having thrust away made a shipwreck concerning the faith;

of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I delivered to Satan, that they might be taught not to blaspheme.
