1 ¶ Take heed not to do your alms before men, to be seen of them; otherwise, ye have no reward of your Father who is in the heavens.
“Be careful that you don’t do your charitable giving before men, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
2 T herefore, when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They already have their reward.
Therefore when you do merciful deeds, don’t sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from men. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.
3 B ut when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth
But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does,
4 t hat thine alms may be in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret, he shall reward thee openly.
so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
5 ¶ And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They already have their reward.
“When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward.
6 B ut thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy chamber, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father who sees in secret shall reward thee openly.
But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
7 B ut when ye pray, use not vain repetitions as the worldly do, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
In praying, don’t use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.
8 B e not ye therefore like unto them, for your Father knows what things ye have need of before ye ask him.
Therefore don’t be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.
9 ¶ Ye, therefore, are to pray like this: Our Father who art in the heavens, Hallowed be thy name.
Pray like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.
10 T hy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.
11 G ive us this day our daily bread.
Give us today our daily bread.
12 A nd set us free from our debts, as we set free our debtors.
Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
13 A nd lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen. ’
14 F or if ye set men free from their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also set you free;
“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 b ut if ye do not set men free from their trespasses, neither will your Father set you free from your trespasses.
But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 ¶ Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance, for they disfigure their faces that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They already have their reward.
“Moreover when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.
17 B ut thou, when thou dost fast, anoint thine head, and wash thy face
But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face;
18 t hat thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who sees in secret, shall reward thee openly.
so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
19 ¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal;
“Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal;
20 b ut lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt and where thieves do not break through nor steal;
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don’t break through and steal;
21 f or where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 T he lamp of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye is sincere, thy whole body shall be full of light.
“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.
23 B ut if thine eye is evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If, therefore, the light that is in thee is darkness, how great is that darkness!
But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 N o one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and riches.
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t serve both God and Mammon.
25 ¶ Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink, nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than food, and the body than raiment?
Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
26 B ehold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are ye not much better than they?
See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they?
27 W hich of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
“Which of you, by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan?
28 A nd why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin;

29 a nd yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 T herefore, if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 T herefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, With what shall we be clothed?

32 F or the Gentiles seek after all these things.) For your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things.

33 B ut seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.
But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.
34 T ake therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the affliction thereof.
Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.
