1 I ch bin ein elender Mann, der die Rute seines Grimmes sehen muß.

I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

2 E r hat mich geführt und lassen gehen in die Finsternis und nicht in Licht.

He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.

3 E r hat seine Hand gewendet wider mich und handelt gar anders mit mir für und für.

Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day.

4 E r hat mir Fleisch und Haut alt gemacht und mein Gebein zerschlagen.

My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

5 E r hat mich verbaut und mich mit Galle und Mühe umgeben.

He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.

6 E r hat mich in Finsternis gelegt wie die, so längst tot sind.

He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.

7 E r hat mich vermauert, daß ich nicht heraus kann, und mich in harte Fesseln gelegt.

He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.

8 U nd wenn ich gleich schreie und rufe, so stopft er die Ohren zu vor meinem Gebet.

Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.

9 E r hat meinen Weg vermauert mit Werkstücken und meinen Steig umgekehrt.

He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.

10 E r hat auf mich gelauert wie ein Bär, wie ein Löwe im Verborgenen.

He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.

11 E r läßt mich des Weges fehlen. Er hat mich zerstückt und zunichte gemacht.

He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate.

12 E r hat seinen Bogen gespannt und mich dem Pfeil zum Ziel gesteckt.

He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

13 E r hat aus dem Köcher in meine Nieren schießen lassen.

He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.

14 I ch bin ein Spott allem meinem Volk und täglich ihr Liedlein.

I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.

15 E r hat mich mit Bitterkeit gesättigt und mit Wermut getränkt.

He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood.

16 E r hat meine Zähne zu kleinen Stücken zerschlagen. Er wälzt mich in der Asche.

He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.

17 M eine Seele ist aus dem Frieden vertrieben; ich muß des Guten vergessen.

And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I forgat prosperity.

18 I ch sprach: Mein Vermögen ist dahin und meine Hoffnung auf den HERRN.

And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord:

19 G edenke doch, wie ich so elend und verlassen, mit Wermut und Galle getränkt bin!

remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

20 D u wirst ja daran gedenken; denn meine Seele sagt mir es.

My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.

21 D as nehme ich zu Herzen, darum hoffe ich noch.

This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.

22 D ie Güte des HERRN ist's, daß wir nicht gar aus sind; seine Barmherzigkeit hat noch kein Ende,

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

23 s ondern sie ist alle Morgen neu, und deine Treue ist groß.

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

24 D er HERR ist mein Teil, spricht meine Seele; darum will ich auf ihn hoffen.

The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.

25 D enn der HERR ist freundlich dem, der auf ihn harrt, und der Seele, die nach ihm fragt.

The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

26 E s ist ein köstlich Ding, geduldig sein und auf die Hilfe des HERRN hoffen.

It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.

27 E s ist ein köstlich Ding einem Mann, daß er das Joch in seiner Jugend trage;

It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

28 d aß ein Verlassener geduldig sei, wenn ihn etwas überfällt,

He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.

29 u nd seinen Mund in den Staub stecke und der Hoffnung warte

He putteth his mouth in the dust; if so be there may be hope.

30 u nd lasse sich auf die Backen schlagen und viel Schmach anlegen.

He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him: he is filled full with reproach.

31 D enn der HERR verstößt nicht ewiglich;

For the Lord will not cast off for ever:

32 s ondern er betrübt wohl, und erbarmt sich wieder nach seiner Güte.

but though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.

33 D enn er nicht von Herzen die Menschen plagt und betrübt,

For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.

34 a ls wollte er die Gefangenen auf Erden gar unter seine Füße zertreten

To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,

35 u nd eines Mannes Recht vor dem Allerhöchsten beugen lassen

to turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High,

36 u nd eines Menschen Sache verkehren lassen, gleich als sähe es der HERR nicht.

to subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not.

37 W er darf denn sagen, daß solches geschehe ohne des HERRN Befehl

Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?

38 u nd daß nicht Böses und Gutes komme aus dem Munde des Allerhöchsten?

Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?

39 W ie murren denn die Leute im Leben also? Ein jeglicher murre wider seine Sünde!

Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?

40 U nd laßt uns erforschen und prüfen unser Wesen und uns zum HERRN bekehren!

Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.

41 L aßt uns unser Herz samt den Händen aufheben zu Gott im Himmel!

Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

42 W ir, wir haben gesündigt und sind ungehorsam gewesen; darum hast du billig nicht verschont;

We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.

43 s ondern du hast uns mit Zorn überschüttet und verfolgt und ohne Barmherzigkeit erwürgt.

Thou hast covered with anger, and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied.

44 D u hast dich mit einer Wolke verdeckt, daß kein Gebet hindurch konnte.

Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.

45 D u hast uns zu Kot und Unflat gemacht unter den Völkern.

Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.

46 A lle unsre Feinde sperren ihr Maul auf wider uns.

All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.

47 W ir werden gedrückt und geplagt mit Schrecken und Angst.

Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.

48 M eine Augen rinnen mit Wasserbächen über den Jammer der Tochter meines Volks.

Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

49 M eine Augen fließen und können nicht ablassen; denn es ist kein Aufhören da,

Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission,

50 b is der HERR vom Himmel herabschaue uns sehe darein.

till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.

51 M ein Auge frißt mir das Leben weg um die Töchter meiner Stadt.

Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.

52 M eine Feinde haben mich gehetzt wie einen Vogel ohne Ursache;

Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause.

53 s ie haben mein Leben in einer Grube fast umgebracht und Steine auf mich geworfen;

They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.

54 s ie haben mein Haupt mit Wasser überschüttet; da sprach ich: Nun bin ich gar dahin.

Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.

55 I ch rief aber deinen Namen an, HERR, unten aus der Grube,

I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.

56 u nd du erhörtest meine Stimme: Verbirg deine Ohren nicht vor meinem Seufzen und Schreien!

Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.

57 D u nahest dich zu mir, wenn ich dich anrufe, und sprichst: Fürchte dich nicht!

Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not.

58 D u führest, HERR, die Sache meiner Seele und erlösest mein Leben.

O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life.

59 D u siehest, HERR, wie mir so Unrecht geschieht; hilf mir zu meinem Recht!

O Lord, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause.

60 D u siehst alle ihre Rache und alle ihre Gedanken wider mich.

Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me.

61 H ERR, du hörest ihr Schmähen und alle ihre Gedanken über mich,

Thou hast heard their reproach, O Lord, and all their imaginations against me;

62 d ie Lippen meiner Widersacher und ihr dichten wider mich täglich.

the lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.

63 S chaue doch, sie sitzen oder stehen auf, so singen sie von mir ein Liedlein.

Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.

64 V ergilt ihnen, HERR, wie sie verdient haben!

Render unto them a recompence, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.

65 L aß ihnen das Herz erschrecken, laß sie deinen Fluch fühlen!

Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them.

66 V erfolge sie mit deinem Grimm und vertilge sie unter dem Himmel des HERRN.

Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the Lord.
