The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all.

3 D er Kluge sieht das Unglück und verbirgt sich; die Unverständigen gehen hindurch und werden beschädigt.

A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

4 W o man leidet in des HERRN Furcht, da ist Reichtum, Ehre und Leben.

By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.

5 S tachel und Stricke sind auf dem Wege des Verkehrten; wer sich aber davon fernhält, bewahrt sein Leben.

Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.

6 W ie man einen Knaben gewöhnt, so läßt er nicht davon, wenn er alt wird.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

7 D er Reiche herrscht über die Armen; und wer borgt, ist des Leihers Knecht.

The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.

8 W er Unrecht sät, der wird Mühsal ernten und wird durch die Rute seiner Bosheit umkommen.

He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

9 E in gütiges Auge wird gesegnet; denn er gibt von seinem Brot den Armen.

He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

10 T reibe den Spötter aus, so geht der Zank weg, so hört auf Hader und Schmähung.

Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.

11 W er ein treues Herz und liebliche Rede hat, des Freund ist der König.

He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.

12 D ie Augen des HERRN behüten guten Rat; aber die Worte des Verächters verkehrt er.

The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, and he overthroweth the words of the transgressor.

13 D er Faule spricht: Es ist ein Löwe draußen, ich möchte erwürgt werden auf der Gasse.

The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.

14 D er Huren Mund ist eine Tiefe Grube; wem der HERR ungnädig ist, der fällt hinein.

The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the Lord shall fall therein.

15 T orheit steckt dem Knaben im Herzen; aber die Rute der Zucht wird sie fern von ihm treiben.

Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

16 W er dem Armen Unrecht tut, daß seines Guts viel werde, der wird auch einem Reichen geben, und Mangel haben.

He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want.

17 N eige deine Ohren und höre die Worte der Weisen und nimm zu Herzen meine Lehre.

Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply thine heart unto my knowledge.

18 D enn es wird dir sanft tun, wo du sie wirst im Sinne behalten und sie werden miteinander durch deinen Mund wohl geraten.

For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee; they shall withal be fitted in thy lips.

19 D aß deine Hoffnung sei auf den HERRN, erinnere ich dich an solches heute dir zugut.

That thy trust may be in the Lord, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.

20 H abe ich dir's nicht mannigfaltig vorgeschrieben mit Rat und Lehren,

Have not I written to thee excellent things in counsels and knowledge,

21 d aß ich dir zeigte einen gewissen Grund der Wahrheit, daß du recht antworten könntest denen, die dich senden?

that I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?

22 B eraube den Armen nicht, ob er wohl arm ist, und unterdrücke den Elenden nicht im Tor.

Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

23 D enn der HERR wird ihre Sache führen und wird ihre Untertreter untertreten.

for the Lord will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

24 G eselle dich nicht zum Zornigen und halte dich nicht zu einem grimmigen Mann;

Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:

25 d u möchtest seinen Weg lernen und an deiner Seele Schaden nehmen.

lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

26 S ei nicht bei denen, die ihre Hand verhaften und für Schuld Bürge werden;

Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts.

27 d enn wo du es nicht hast, zu bezahlen, so wird man dir dein Bett unter dir wegnehmen.

If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

28 V errücke nicht die vorigen Grenzen, die deine Väter gemacht haben.

Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

29 S iehst du einen Mann behend in seinem Geschäft, der wird vor den Königen stehen und wird nicht stehen vor den Unedlen.

Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.
