1 D er Gottlose flieht, und niemand jagt ihn; der Gerechte aber ist getrost wie ein junger Löwe.

The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

2 U m des Landes Sünde willen werden viel Änderungen der Fürstentümer; aber um der Leute willen, die verständig und vernünftig sind, bleiben sie lange.

For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged.

3 E in armer Mann, der die Geringen bedrückt, ist wie ein Meltau, der die Frucht verdirbt.

A poor man that oppresseth the poor is like a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.

4 D ie das Gesetz verlassen, loben den Gottlosen; die es aber bewahren, sind unwillig auf sie.

They that forsake the law praise the wicked: but such as keep the law contend with them.

5 B öse Leute merken nicht aufs Recht; die aber nach dem HERRN fragen, merken auf alles.

Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the Lord understand all things.

6 E s ist besser ein Armer, der in seiner Frömmigkeit geht, denn ein Reicher, der in verkehrten Wegen geht.

Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.

7 W er das Gesetz bewahrt, ist ein verständiges Kind; wer aber der Schlemmer Geselle ist, schändet seinen Vater.

Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.

8 W er sein Gut mehrt mit Wucher und Zins, der sammelt es für den, der sich der Armen erbarmt.

He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.

9 W er sein Ohr abwendet, das Gesetz zu hören, des Gebet ist ein Greuel.

He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

10 W er die Frommen verführt auf bösem Wege, der wird in seine Grube fallen; aber die Frommen werden Gutes ererben.

Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession.

11 E in Reicher dünkt sich, weise zu sein; aber ein verständiger Armer durchschaut ihn.

The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.

12 W enn die Gerechten Oberhand haben, so geht's sehr fein zu; wenn aber Gottlose aufkommen, wendet sich's unter den Leuten.

When righteous men do rejoice, there is great glory: but when the wicked rise, a man is hidden.

13 W er seine Missetat leugnet, dem wird's nicht gelingen; wer sie aber bekennt und läßt, der wird Barmherzigkeit erlangen.

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

14 W ohl dem, der sich allewege fürchtet; wer aber sein Herz verhärtet, wird in Unglück fallen.

Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.

15 E in Gottloser, der über ein armes Volk regiert, das ist ein brüllender Löwe und gieriger Bär.

As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.

16 W enn ein Fürst ohne Verstand ist, so geschieht viel Unrecht; wer aber den Geiz haßt, der wird lange leben.

The prince that wanteth understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days.

17 E in Mensch, der am Blut einer Seele schuldig ist, der wird flüchtig sein bis zur Grube, und niemand halte ihn auf.

A man that doeth violence to the blood of any person shall flee to the pit; let no man stay him.

18 W er fromm einhergeht, dem wird geholfen; wer aber verkehrtes Weges ist, wird auf einmal fallen.

Whoso walketh uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.

19 W er seinen Acker baut, wird Brot genug haben; wer aber dem Müßiggang nachgeht, wird Armut genug haben.

He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.

20 E in treuer Mann wird viel gesegnet; wer aber eilt, reich zu werden, wird nicht unschuldig bleiben.

A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent.

21 P erson ansehen ist nicht gut; und mancher tut übel auch wohl um ein Stück Brot.

To have respect of persons is not good: for for a piece of bread that man will transgress.

22 W er eilt zum Reichtum und ist neidisch, der weiß nicht, daß Mangel ihm begegnen wird.

He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.

23 W er einen Menschen straft, wird hernach Gunst finden, mehr denn der da heuchelt.

He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue.

24 W er seinem Vater oder seiner Mutter etwas nimmt und spricht, es sei nicht Sünde, der ist des Verderbers Geselle.

Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.

25 E in Stolzer erweckt Zank; wer aber auf den HERRN sich verläßt, wird gelabt.

He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the Lord shall be made fat.

26 W er sich auf sein Herz verläßt, ist ein Narr; wer aber mit Weisheit geht, wird entrinnen.

He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

27 W er dem Armen gibt, dem wird nichts mangeln; wer aber seine Augen abwendet, der wird viel verflucht.

He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

28 W enn die Gottlosen aufkommen, so verbergen sich die Leute; wenn sie aber umkommen, werden der Gerechten viel.

When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase.
