1 N ow these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.

Këta janë emrat e bijve të Izraelit që erdhën në Egjipt me Jakobin. Secili prej tyre erdhi me familjen e tij:

2 R euben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

Rubeni, Simeoni, Levi dhe Juda,

3 I ssachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

Isakari, Zabuloni dhe Beniamini,

4 D an, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Dani dhe Naftali, Gadi dhe Asheri.

5 A nd all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

Tërë njerëzit që kishin dalë nga gjaku i Jakobit arrinin shtatëdhjetë veta (Jozefi ndodhej tashmë në Egjipt).

6 A nd Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

Pastaj Jozefi vdiq, dhe po ashtu vdiqën tërë vëllezërit e tij dhe gjithë ai brez.

7 A nd the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

Dhe bijtë e Izraelit qenë frytdhënës, u shumëzuan fort dhe u bënë të shumtë, u bënë jashtëzakonisht të fortë; dhe vendi u mbush me ta.

8 N ow there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

Por tani doli në Egjipt një mbret i ri, që nuk e kishte njohur Jozefin.

9 A nd he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

Ai i tha popullit të tij: "Ja, populli i bijve të Izraelit është më i shumtë dhe më i fortë se ne.

10 C ome on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

Të përdorim, pra, dinakëri ndaj tyre, me qëllim që të mos shumëzohen dhe, në rast lufte të mos bashkohen me armiqtë tanë dhe të luftojnë kundër nesh, dhe pastaj të largohen nga vendi".

11 T herefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

Vunë, pra, kryeintendentë të punimeve mbi ta, me qëllim që t’i shtypnin me angaritë e tyre. Kështu ata i ndërtuan Faraonit qytetet-depozitë Pitom dhe Raamses.

12 B ut the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

Por sa më tepër i shtypnin, aq më shumë shtoheshin dhe përhapeshin; prandaj Egjiptasit arritën të kenë shumë frikë nga bijtë e Izraelit,

13 A nd the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:

dhe Egjiptasit i detyruan bijtë e Izraelit t’u shërbenin me ashpërsi,

14 A nd they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

dhe ua nxinë jetën me një skllavëri të vrazhdë, duke i futur në punimin e argjilës dhe të tullave si dhe në çdo lloj pune në ara. I detyronin t’i bënin tërë këto punë me ashpërsi.

15 A nd the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:

Mbreti i Egjiptit u foli edhe mamive hebre, nga të cilat njëra quhej Shifrah dhe tjetra Puah, dhe u tha:

16 A nd he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

"Kur do të ndihmoni gratë hebre lindëse, dhe do t’i shihni të ulura në ndenjësen e lindjes, në rast se fëmija është mashkull, vriteni; po të jetë femër, lëreni të jetojë".

17 B ut the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

Por mamitë patën frikë nga Perëndia dhe nuk bënë ashtu siç i kishte urdhëruar mbreti i Egjiptit, por i lanë gjallë fëmijët meshkuj.

18 A nd the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

Atëherë mbreti i Egjiptit thirri mamitë dhe u tha: "Pse e bëtë këtë dhe i latë gjallë fëmijët meshkuj?".

19 A nd the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

Mamitë iu përgjigjën Faraonit: "Sepse gratë hebre nuk janë si gratë egjiptase, por janë të fuqishme dhe lindin para se t’u vijë mamia pranë".

20 T herefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

Dhe Perëndia u bëri të mirë këtyre mamive; dhe populli u shtua dhe u bë jashtëzakonisht i fortë.

21 A nd it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

Kështu, duke qenë se ato mami kishin frikë nga Perëndia, ky u dha familje më vete.

22 A nd Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.

Atëherë Faraoni i dha këtë urdhër tërë popullit të tij duke thënë: "Çdo mashkull që lind, hidheni në lumë; por lini gjallë tërë femrat".
