Psalm 88 ~ Psalm 88

1 O LORD God of my saving health, I cry day and night before Thee;

O Lord, the God of my salvation, I have cried to You for help by day; at night I am in Your presence.

2 l et my prayer come before thee; incline thine ear unto my cry;

Let my prayer come before You and really enter into Your presence; incline Your ear to my cry!

3 f or my soul is full of troubles, and my life draws near unto Sheol.

For I am full of troubles, and my life draws near to Sheol (the place of the dead).

4 I am counted with those that go down into the pit; I am as a man that has no strength:

I am counted among those who go down into the pit (the grave); I am like a man who has no help or strength,

5 F reed among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom thou dost remember no more; and they are cut off from thy hand.

Cast away among the dead, like the slain that lie in a grave, whom You remember no more, and they are cut off from Your hand.

6 T hou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.

You have laid me in the depths of the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps.

7 T hy wrath lies hard upon me, and thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah.

Your wrath lies hard upon me, and You have afflicted me with all Your waves. Selah!

8 T hou hast put away mine acquaintances far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them; I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

You have put my friends far from me; You have made me an abomination to them. I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

9 M y eye mourns by reason of affliction; LORD, I have called daily upon thee; I have stretched out my hands unto thee.

My eye grows dim because of sorrow and affliction. Lord, I have called daily on You; I have spread forth my hands to You.

10 Wilt thou show wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Selah.

Will You show wonders to the dead? Shall the departed arise and praise You? Selah!

11 S hall thy mercy be declared in the grave? or thy truth in hell?

Shall Your steadfast love be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in Abaddon (Sheol, as a place of ruin and destruction)?

12 S hall thy wonder be known in darkness? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

Shall Your wonders be known in the dark? And Your righteousness in the place of forgetfulness ?

13 B ut unto thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer come before thee.

But to You I cry, O Lord; and in the morning shall my prayer come to meet You.

14 L ORD, why dost thou cast off my soul? why dost thou hide thy face from me?

Lord, why do You cast me off? Why do You hide Your face from me?

15 I am afflicted and destitute; from my youth up I have feared thee and been in awe of thee.

I was afflicted and close to death from my youth up; while I suffer Your terrors I am distracted.

16 T hy fierce wrath goes over me; thy terrors have cut me off.

Your fierce wrath has swept over me; Your terrors have destroyed me.

17 T hey came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together.

They surround me like a flood all day long; together they have closed in upon me.

18 T hou hast put lover and friend far from me, and placed my acquaintances into darkness.

Lover and friend have You put far from me; my familiar friends are darkness and the grave.
