1 Corinthians 5 ~ 1 Corinthians 5

1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, impurity of a sort that is condemned and does not occur even among the heathen; for a man has father’s wife.

2 A nd ye are puffed up and have not rather mourned, that he that has done this deed might be taken away from among you.

And you are proud and arrogant! And you ought rather to mourn (bow in sorrow and in shame) until the person who has done this thing is removed from your fellowship and your midst!

3 F or I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, him that has so done this deed.

As for my attitude, though I am absent in body, I am present in spirit, and I have already decided and passed judgment, as if actually present,

4 I n the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, on the man who has committed such a deed. When you and my own spirit are met together with the power of our Lord Jesus,

5 l et such a one be delivered unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

You are to deliver this man over to Satan for physical discipline, that spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

6 Y our glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven will ferment the whole lump ?

7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ, our passover, is sacrificed for us;

Purge (clean out) the old leaven that you may be fresh (new) dough, still uncontaminated, for Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed.

8 t herefore let us celebrate the feast, not in the old leaven, neither in the leaven of malice and wickedness, but in the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Therefore, let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with leaven of vice and malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened of purity (nobility, honor) and sincerity and truth.

9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to associate with fornicators,

I wrote you in my letter not to associate with unchaste (impure) people—

10 y et not altogether with the fornicators of this world or with the covetous or extortioners or with idolaters, for then ye would need to go out of the world.

Not altogether shun the immoral people of this world, or the greedy graspers and cheats and thieves or idolaters, since otherwise you would need to get out of the world and human society altogether!

11 B ut now I have written unto you not to associate with anyone calling himself a brother if he is a fornicator or covetous or an idolater or a railer or a drunkard or an extortioner; with such a one do not even eat.

But now I write to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is known to be guilty of immorality or greed, or is an idolater, or is a person with a foul tongue, or is a drunkard or a swindler or a robber. you must not so much as eat with such a person.

12 F or why shall I judge those that are without? do ye not judge those that are within?

What of mine is it and what right have I to judge outsiders? Is it not those inside upon whom you are to pass disciplinary judgment ?

13 B ut those that are without, God shall judge. Therefore, put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

God alone sits in judgment on those who are outside. Drive out that wicked one from among you.
