Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying,

2 A rise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me.

3 B ut Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD and went down to Joppa, and he found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish fleeing from the presence of the LORD.

But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from being in the presence of the Lord and went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the appointed fare and went down into the ship to go with them to Tarshish from being in the presence of the Lord.

4 But the LORD caused a great wind to rise up in the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship thought she would be broken.

But the Lord sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a violent tempest on the sea so that the ship was about to be broken.

5 A nd the mariners were afraid, and everyone called unto his god, and they cast forth the vessels that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; he lay and was fast asleep.

Then the mariners were afraid, and each man cried to his god; and they cast the goods that were in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep.

6 S o the shipmaster came to him and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that he will have compassion upon us that we not perish.

So the captain came and said to him, What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call upon your God! Perhaps your God will give a thought to us so that we shall not perish.

7 A nd each one said to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

And they each said to one another, Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us. So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

8 T hen they said unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, why this evil is come upon us; What is thine occupation? and from where dost thou come? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

Then they said to him, Tell us, we pray you, on whose account has this evil come upon us? What is your occupation? Where did you come from? And what is your country and nationality?

9 A nd he said unto them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, God of the heavens, who has made the sea and the dry land.

And he said to them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear and worship the Lord, the God of heaven, Who made the sea and the dry land.

10 T hen the men were exceedingly afraid and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD because he had told them.

Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, What is this that you have done? For the men knew that he fled from being in the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

11 Then they said unto him, What shall we do unto thee that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea rose higher and was wroth.

Then they said to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may subside and be calm for us? For the sea became more and more tempestuous.

12 A nd he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you; for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

And said to them, Take me up and cast me into the sea; so shall the sea become calm for you, for I know that it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.

13 N evertheless the men rowed hard to turn the ship to land, but they could not; for the sea rose higher and was wroth against them.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship to the land, but they could not, for the sea became more and more violent against them.

14 A nd they cried unto the LORD and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for the soul of this man, and do not lay upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

Therefore they cried to the Lord, We beseech You, O Lord, we beseech You, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for You, O Lord, have done as it pleased You.

15 S o they took up Jonah and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from her raging.

So they took up Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.

16 T hen the men feared the LORD exceedingly and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD and made vows.

Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

17 N ow the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
