1 Concerning the Ammonites, thus hath the LORD said: Does Israel have no sons? does he have no heir? why then does their king inherit Gad and his people dwell in his cities?

Concerning and against the Ammonites: Thus says the Lord: Has Israel no sons ? Has no heir? Why then has Milcom dispossessed and inherited Gad, and his people dwell in Gad’s cities?

2 T herefore, behold, the days come, said the LORD, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be made a desolate heap, and her cities shall be burned with fire; then shall Israel be heir unto those that were his heirs, said the LORD.

Therefore behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will cause an alarm of war to be heard against Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it will become a desolate heap, and its daughter will be burned with fire. Then will Israel dispossess those who dispossessed him, says the Lord.

3 H owl, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled; cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird yourselves with sackcloth; lament and run to and fro by the hedges, for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.

Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste! Cry out, you daughter of Rabbah! Gird yourselves with sackcloth, lament, and run to and fro inside the enclosures; for Milcom shall go into exile, together with his priests and his princes.

4 W hy gloriest thou in the valleys? Thy valley has slipped, O backsliding daughter that trusted in her treasures, she that saith, Who shall come against me?

Why do you boast of your valleys? Your valley flows away, O rebellious and faithless daughter, who trusted in her treasures, who said, Who can come against me?

5 B ehold, I bring fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of the hosts, from all sides; and ye shall be driven out each man right forth in the direction he is facing; and no one shall gather up him that wanders.

Behold, I will bring terror upon you, says the Lord, the Lord of hosts, from all who are round about you; and you will be driven out, each man fleeing straight before him, and there will be no one to gather together the fugitives.

6 A nd afterward I will turn again the captivity of the sons of Ammon, said the LORD.

And afterward I will reverse the captivity of the children of Ammon and restore their fortunes, says the Lord.

7 Concerning Edom, thus hath the LORD of the hosts said: Is there no more wisdom in Teman? Has the counsel of the wise perished? Is their wisdom corrupted?

Concerning and against Edom: Thus says the Lord of hosts: Is there no longer wisdom in Teman ? Has counsel vanished from the intelligent and prudent? Is their wisdom all poured out and used up?

8 F lee, turn back, hide in the deeps to remain, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, at the time that I have to visit him.

Flee, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I will bring the calamity and destruction of Esau upon him when I inspect and punish him.

9 I f grapegatherers came against thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? If thieves by night, they will take what they have need of.

If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some ungleaned grapes? If thieves came by night, would they not destroy only what is enough ?

10 B ut I will make Esau bare, I will uncover his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself; his seed shall be destroyed, and his brethren and his neighbours and he shall no longer be.

But I have stripped Esau (Edom) bare; I have uncovered his hiding places, and he cannot hide himself. His offspring will be destroyed, with his brethren and his neighbors; and he will be no more.

11 L eave thy fatherless children; I will raise them; and thy widows shall trust in me.

Leave your fatherless children; I will preserve them alive. And let your widows trust and confide in Me.

12 F or thus hath the LORD said: Behold, those who were not condemned to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and shalt thou be absolved of everything? Thou shalt not be absolved, but thou shalt surely drink of it.

For thus says the Lord: Behold, they whose rule was not to drink the cup shall assuredly drink—and are you to remain unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you shall surely drink.

13 F or I have sworn by myself, said the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all its cities shall be perpetual wastes.

For I have sworn by Myself, says the Lord, that Bozrah shall become a horror, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all its cities shall be perpetual wastes.

14 I have heard the news, that from the LORD a messenger had been sent unto the Gentiles, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.

I have heard a report from the Lord, and a messenger is sent to the nations, saying, Gather together and come against her! And rise up for the battle.

15 F or, behold, I have placed thee as small among the Gentiles and despised among men.

For, behold, I will make you small among the nations and despised among men.

16 T hy arrogance has deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dost dwell in the clefts of the rock, that dost hold the height of the mountain: though thou should make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from there, said the LORD.

Your horror (your idol) has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, O you who dwell in the clefts of the rock '> Petra], who hold and occupy the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as the eagle’s, I will bring you down from there, says the Lord.

17 A lso Edom shall be a desolation; every one that goes by it shall be astonished and shall hiss at all its plagues.

And Edom shall be an astonishment and a horror; everyone who goes by it shall be astonished and shall hiss with horror at all its plagues and disasters.

18 A s in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, said the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.

As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities, says the Lord, no man shall dwell there; neither shall a son of man live in it temporarily.

19 B ehold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan to the strong habitation: for I will make rest and make him run from upon her, and he who is chosen I shall appoint over her; for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

See, there comes up one like a lion from the jungles (the pride) of the Jordan against the strong habitation and into the permanent pastures; for in a twinkling I will drive him from there. And I will appoint over him the one whom I choose. For who is like Me? And who will appoint for Me the time and prosecute Me for this proceeding? And what shepherd can stand before Me and defy Me?

20 T herefore hear the counsel of the LORD that he has taken against Edom; and his thoughts, that he has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out; surely he shall destroy their habitations with them.

Therefore hear the plan of the Lord which He has made against Edom, and His purposes which He has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely they shall be dragged away, even the little ones of the flock; surely He shall make their habitation desolate because of them and their fold shocked at their fate.

21 T he earth is moved at the noise of their fall; at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea.

At the sound of their fall the earth shall tremble; at their crying the sound shall be heard at the Red Sea.

22 B ehold, he shall rise up and fly as the eagle and spread his wings over Bozrah; and at that day the heart of the mighty men of Edom shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

Behold, one will come up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against Bozrah; and in that day the hearts of the mighty warriors of Edom will be like the heart of a woman in her pangs.

23 Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad, for they have heard bad news; they have melted in waters of feebleness; they cannot be reassured.

Concerning and against Damascus: Hamath and Arpad are confounded and put to shame, for they have heard bad news; they are fainthearted and wasting away; there is trouble and anxiety on a sea which cannot rest.

24 D amascus is waxed feeble and turns herself to flee, and fear has seized on her; anguish and sorrows have taken her as a woman in travail.

Damascus has become feeble; she has turned to flee, and terror and panic have seized her; anguish and sorrow have taken hold of her, like a woman in childbirth.

25 H ow did they not forgive the city of praise, the city of my joy!

How the renowned city is not deserted, the city of my joy!.

26 T herefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, said the LORD of the hosts.

Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed in that day, says the Lord of hosts.

27 A nd I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the houses of Benhadad.

And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it will consume the palaces of Ben-hadad.

28 Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote, thus hath the LORD said; Arise ye, go up to Kedar and destroy the men of the east.

Concerning Kedar and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon shall smite: Thus says the Lord: Arise, go up against Kedar and destroy the sons of the east.

29 T heir tents and their flocks shall they take away; they shall take to themselves their curtains and all their vessels and their camels; and they shall invoke fear on every side against them.

Their tents and their flocks shall they take—their tent hangings and all their utensils and their camels. And men shall cry to them, Terror on every side!

30 F lee, get you far off, dwell in the deeps that ye may stand, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, said the LORD; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has taken counsel against you and has conceived a purpose against you.

Flee, wander far off, dwell deep, O you inhabitants of Hazor says the Lord, for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has planned a course against you and has conceived a purpose against you.

31 A rise, get you up unto the wealthy nation that dwells without care, saith the LORD, which has neither gates nor bars, which dwells alone.

Arise, get up into a nation which is at ease, which dwells without care, says the Lord, which has neither gates nor bars, which dwells apart and alone.

32 A nd their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter them into all the winds, throwing them out unto the utmost corner; and from all their sides I will bring their ruin, said the LORD.

And their camels will be booty, and their herds of cattle a spoil; and I will scatter to all winds those who clip off the corners of their hair, and I will bring their calamity from every side, says the Lord.

33 A nd Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons and a desolation for ever: no man shall abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it.

And Hazor shall become a dwelling place of jackals, a desolation forever; no man shall dwell there; neither shall a son of man live in it temporarily.

34 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet regarding Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,

The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning and against Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,

35 T hus hath the LORD of the hosts said: Behold, I break the bow of Elam, the foundation of their might.

Thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their strength.

36 A nd upon Elam I will bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation where the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four corners of heaven; and I will scatter them toward all those winds, and there will be no nation to which the outcasts of Elam will not come.

37 F or I will cause Elam to fear before their enemies and before those that seek their soul; and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, said the LORD; and I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them.

And I will cause Elam to be dismayed and terrified before their enemies and before those who seek and demand their lives; and I will bring evil and disaster upon them, even My fierce anger, says the Lord. And I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them.

38 A nd I will set my throne in Elam and will destroy from there the king and the princes, said the LORD.

And I will set My throne in Elam; and I will destroy from their king and princes, says the Lord.

39 B ut it shall come to pass in the last of the days that I will turn again the captivity of Elam, said the LORD.

But it shall be in the latter days (the end of days) that I will reverse the captivity and restore the fortunes of Elam, says the Lord.
