1 ¶ When Jesus had spoken these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered, and his disciples.
Having said these things, Jesus went out with His disciples beyond (across) the winter torrent of the Kidron. There was a garden there, which He and His disciples entered.
2 A nd Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus gathered there often with his disciples.
And Judas, who was betraying Him and delivering Him up, also knew the place, because Jesus had often retired there with His disciples.
3 J udas then, taking a company of soldiers and ministers of the high priests and of the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
So Judas, obtaining and taking charge of the band of soldiers and some guards (attendants) of the high priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.
4 J esus therefore, knowing all the things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
Then Jesus, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to them and said, Whom are you seeking?
5 T hey answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said unto them, I AM. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them.
They answered Him, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said to them, I am He. Judas, who was betraying Him, was also standing with them.
6 A nd when he said unto them, I AM, they went backward and fell to the ground.
When Jesus said to them, I am He, they went backwards (drew back, lurched backward) and fell to the ground.
7 T hen he asked them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
Then again He asked them, Whom are you seeking? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.
8 J esus answered, I have told you that I AM; if, therefore, ye seek me, let these go away,
Jesus answered, I told you that I am He. So, if you want Me, let these men go their way.
9 t hat the word might be fulfilled, which he spoke, Of those whom thou gavest me I have lost none.
Thus what He had said was fulfilled and verified, Of those whom You have given Me, I have not lost even one.
10 T hen Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and smote the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus.
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 T hen Jesus said unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath; the cup which my Father has given me, shall I not drink it?
Therefore, Jesus said to Peter, Put the sword into the sheath! The cup which My Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?
12 T hen the company of soldiers and the tribune and the ministers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him
So the troops and their captain and the guards (attendants) of the Jews seized Jesus and bound Him,
13 ¶ and led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest of that year and he sent him bound unto Caiaphas, the high priest.
And they brought Him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year.
14 N ow Caiaphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
It was Caiaphas who had counseled the Jews that it was expedient and for their welfare that one man should die for (instead of, in behalf of) the people.
15 A nd Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple; that disciple was known unto the high priest and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and so he entered along with Jesus into the court of the palace of the high priest;
16 B ut Peter stood at the door without. Then that other disciple, who was known unto the high priest, went out and spoke unto her that kept the door and brought in Peter.
But Peter was standing outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the maid who kept the door and brought Peter inside.
17 T hen the damsel that kept the door said unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man’s disciples? He said, I am not.
Then the maid who was in charge at the door said to Peter, You are not also one of the disciples of this Man, are you? He said, I am not!
18 A nd the slaves and servants stood there, who had made a fire of coals, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves; and Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
Now the servants and the guards (the attendants) had made a fire of coals, for it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. And Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 T he high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples and of his doctrine.
Then the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and about His teaching.
20 J esus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews gather; and I have said nothing in secret.
Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in a synagogue and in the temple, where the Jews congregate (assemble); and I have spoken nothing secretly.
21 W hy dost thou ask me? Ask those who heard me what I have said unto them; behold, they know what I said.
Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard what I said to them. See! They know what I said.
22 A nd when he had thus spoken, one of the servants who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
But when He said this, one of the attendants who stood by struck Jesus, saying, Is that how You answer the high priest?
23 J esus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil, but if well, why dost thou smite me?
Jesus replied, If I have said anything wrong tell what was wrong with it. But if I spoke rightly and properly, why do you strike Me?
24 T hus Annas sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 A nd Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it and said, I am not.
But Simon Peter was standing and was warming himself. They said to him, You are not also one of His disciples, are you? He denied it and said, I am not!
26 O ne of the slaves of the high priest, kinsman of the one whose ear Peter had cut off, said, Did I not see thee in the garden with him?
One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did I not see you in the garden with Him?
27 P eter then denied again, and immediately the cock crew.
And again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.
28 ¶ Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment, and it was early; and they themselves did not go into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the passover.
Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium (judgment hall, governor’s palace). And it was early. They themselves did not enter the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled (become ceremonially unclean), but might be fit to eat the Passover.
29 P ilate then went out unto them and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
So Pilate went out to them and said, What accusation do you bring against this Man?
30 T hey answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
They retorted, If He were not an evildoer (criminal), we would not have handed Him over to you.
31 T hen Pilate said unto them, Take him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death;
Pilate said to them, Take Him yourselves and judge and sentence and punish Him according to your law. The Jews answered, It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death.
32 t hat the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what death he should die.
This was to fulfill the word which Jesus had spoken to show (indicate, predict) by what manner of death He was to die.
33 T hen Pilate entered into the judgment hall again and called Jesus and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
So Pilate went back again into the judgment hall and called Jesus and asked Him, Are You the King of the Jews?
34 J esus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it unto thee of me?
Jesus replied, Are you saying this of yourself, or have others told you about Me?
35 P ilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me; what hast thou done?
Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your people and nation and their chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?
36 J esus answered, My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews; now, therefore, my kingdom is not from here.
Jesus answered, My kingdom (kingship, royal power) belongs not to this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My followers would have been fighting to keep Me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, My kingdom is not from here (this world);.
37 P ilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I AM king. To this end I was born, and for this cause I came into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice.
Pilate said to Him, Then You are a King? Jesus answered, You say it! For I am a King. This is why I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the Truth. Everyone who is of the Truth hears and listens to My voice.
38 P ilate said unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, I find no fault at all in him.
Pilate said to Him, What is Truth? On saying this he went out to the Jews again and told them, I find no fault in Him.
39 B ut ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover; will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
But it is your custom that I release one for you at the Passover. So shall I release for you the King of the Jews?
40 T hen they all cried again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
Then they all shouted back again, Not Him, but Barabbas! Now Barabbas was a robber.
