1 And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, which she gave birth unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

Now Dinah daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the girls of the place.

2 A nd when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her and defiled her.

And when Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he seized her, lay with her, and humbled, defiled, and disgraced her.

3 A nd his soul was joined unto Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he fell in love with the damsel and spoke unto her heart.

But his soul longed for and clung to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke comfortingly to her young heart’s wishes.

4 A nd Shechem spoke unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

And Shechem said to his father Hamor, Get me this girl to be my wife.

5 A nd Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; now his sons were with his cattle in the field, and Jacob remained silent until they were come.

Jacob heard that had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field. So Jacob held his peace until they came.

6 And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out unto Jacob to speak with him.

But Hamor father of Shechem went out to Jacob to have a talk with him.

7 A nd the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing which ought not to be done.

When Jacob’s sons heard it, they came from the field; and they were distressed and grieved and very angry, for had done a vile thing to Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter, which ought not to be done.

8 A nd Hamor spoke with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem is joined to your daughter; I pray you give her to him as wife.

And Hamor conferred with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem craves your daughter. I beg of you give her to him to be his wife.

9 A nd make ye marriages with us and give your daughters unto us and take our daughters unto you.

And make marriages with us and give your daughters to us and take our daughters to you.

10 A nd ye shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein and take you possessions therein.

You shall dwell with us; the country will be open to you; live and trade and get your possessions in it.

11 A nd Shechem also said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

And Shechem said to father and to her brothers, Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask of me.

12 A sk me for as much dowry and gift as ye desire, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me; but give me the damsel to wife.

Ask me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according to what you tell me; only give me the girl to be my wife.

13 A nd the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully and talked because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, because Shechem had defiled and disgraced their sister Dinah.

14 A nd they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised, for among us that is a reproach.

They said to them, We cannot do this thing and give our sister to one who is not circumcised, for that would be a reproach and disgrace to us.

15 B ut with this condition we will consent unto you: If ye will become as we are that every male of you be circumcised,

But we do consent to do this: if you will become as we are and every male among you be circumcised,

16 t hen we will give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

Then we will give our daughters to you and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you and become one people.

17 B ut if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter, and we will be gone.

But if you will not listen to us and consent to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and go.

18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.

Their words pleased Hamor and his son Shechem.

19 A nd the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter and he was the most honourable of all the house of his father.

And the young man did not delay to do the thing, for he delighted in Jacob’s daughter. He was honored above all his family.

20 T hen Hamor and Shechem, his son, came unto the gate of their city and communed with the men of their city, saying,

Then Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their town and discussed the matter with the citizens, saying,

21 T hese men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

These men are peaceable with us; so let them dwell in the land and trade in it; for the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters for wives and let us give them our daughters.

22 O nly with this condition will these men consent to dwell with us that we may be one people: if every male among us be circumcised as they are circumcised.

But the men will consent to our request that they live among us and be one people only on condition that every male among us be circumcised, as they are.

23 S hall not their livestock and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? Only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.

Shall not their cattle and their possessions and all their beasts be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell here with us.

24 A nd unto Hamor and unto Shechem, his son, hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

And all the people who went out of the town gate listened and heeded what Hamor and Shechem said; and every male was circumcised who was a resident of that town.

25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword and came upon the city boldly and slew all the males.

But on the third day when were sore, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords, boldly entered the city, and slew all the males.

26 A nd they slew Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.

And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house and departed.

27 T he sons of Jacob came upon the slain and spoiled the city because they had defiled their sister.

Jacob’s sons came upon the slain and plundered the town, because there their sister had been defiled and disgraced.

28 T hey took their sheep and their oxen and their asses and that which was in the city and that which was in the field

They took their flocks, their herds, their donkeys, and whatever was in the town and in the field;

29 a nd all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives they took captive and spoiled even all that was in the house.

All their wealth and all their little ones and their wives they took captive, making spoil even of all in the houses.

30 A nd Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, You have ruined me, making me infamous and embroiling me with the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites! And we are few in number, and they will gather together against me and attack me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my household.

31 A nd they said, Should he deal with our sister as with a harlot?

And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with a harlot?
