1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly,

Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly,

2 a nd said, I cried by reason of my tribulation unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and thou didst hear my voice.

And said, I cried out of my distress to the Lord, and He heard me; out of the belly of Sheol cried I, and You heard my voice.

3 F or thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about; all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the floods surrounded me; all Your waves and Your billows passed over me.

4 T hen I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will see thy holy temple again.

Then I said, I have been cast out of Your presence and Your sight; yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.

5 T he waters compassed me about, even to the soul, the depth closed me round about; the weeds were wrapped about my head.

The waters compassed me about, even to life; the abyss surrounded me, the seaweed was wrapped about my head.

6 I descended to the roots of the mountains; the earth put her bars about me for ever; yet thou hast brought up my life out of the grave, O LORD my God.

I went down to the bottoms and the very roots of the mountains; the earth with its bars closed behind me forever. Yet You have brought up my life from the pit and corruption, O Lord my God.

7 W hen my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer entered in unto thee in thy holy temple.

When my soul fainted upon me, I earnestly and seriously remembered the Lord; and my prayer came to You, into Your holy temple.

8 T hose that observe lying vanities forsake his mercy.

Those who pay regard to false, useless, and worthless idols forsake their own mercy and loving-kindness.

9 B ut I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed; that saving comes of the LORD.

But as for me, I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation and deliverance belong to the Lord!

10 And the LORD spoke unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
